Is Mackenzie even an option for us?

DH and I have narrowed it down to a couple of names for our son, due in [name_u]March[/name_u]. One of them is [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u].

But we are not sure it’s usable for us.

See, we have a 3 year old cat named [name_m]Mack[/name_m]. And we feel like having a son named [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u], which might occasionally shortened to [name_m]Mac[/name_m]/[name_m]Mack[/name_m] for convenience and a cat named [name_m]Mack[/name_m] might be weird.

Any thoughts on this matter?

And I’m not in the mood for a discussion on the ‘right’ gender for [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] to be used on. I just want to know about the cat thing. Thanks.

If that’s the name you absolutely love I don’t think it’s an issue. You’ll find a way to differentiate between the two. And sadly the cat won’t always be with you. You could even change the cats name slightly like [name_m]Mackie[/name_m] or [name_u]Mickey[/name_u].

I think it’s totally usable. Like the above poster said: you could call the cat [name_m]Mackie[/name_m].

I also believe it is usuable. Animals are treasured family members in my family. I wouldn’t bat an eye if anyone thought I was honoring a pet. You love your cat, and you love your baby. Go with [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] imo.

Bit weird, but not in a way that you should let stop you. I think [name_m]Mack[/name_m]'s more of an adult nickname anyway, and by the time your son gets to that point the cat will sadly probably be long gone. You could call your son [name_u]Kenzie[/name_u] or [name_m]Kenzo[/name_m] while he’s little, which seem cuter to me anyway.

Sorry, I would vote no.

I don’t think it’s weird. It would be weird if you named your child Bubbles, or Whiskers, or Sir Meow, but [name_m]Mack[/name_m] is very much a person name. Having both a pet and a little boy who answer to it is not a bad thing. If anyone give you grief about it your can always bring up Bindi [name_f]Sue[/name_f] [name_m]Irwin[/name_m] who is named after a crocodile and dog. Or the iconic “The dog was named [name_u]Indiana[/name_u]” [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] [name_m]Jones[/name_m]. Point is it’s not that weird for animals and children to share a name, as long as the name is not weird!

Good luck and congratulations!

I think it’s fine.

I think it might get a bit confusing.

I don’t think using [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] is a problem, but using the nickname [name_m]Mac/name_m would be. I wouldn’t change the cat’s name- how confusing would it be to have someone suddenly start calling you by a new name after being known as a different one all your life? You can use the nickname [name_m]Ken[/name_m], or [name_u]Kenzie[/name_u] as a PP suggested.

I think it’s fine with a cat - a dog would be weird because you call it.

We had a similar issue! Our cat’s name is [name_f]Grace[/name_f], and husband vetoed any use of [name_f]Grace[/name_f] for our little girl. I personally don’t think it’s an issue. You can refer to the cat as “[name_f]Cat[/name_f]-[name_m]Mack[/name_m]” I like the way that rolls off the tongue!
