Is my girls list too plain? How can I spice it up?

I’m starting to worry that my girl names are boring. I don’t mind the popularity of them, but they do sound a bit dull. I do like uncommon names, but I can’t find any I like enough to use. I wish I wasn’t so picky. I know a lot of uncommon/rare names, but most of them sound awkward and unattractive.

[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]
[name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Katarina[/name_f]
[name_f]Isabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Seraphine[/name_f]
[name_f]Mariana[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]

I find it just the opposite. Several of your choices are quite adventurous.

I don’t think they’re dull! These are vintage names. They’re all lovely. What do you want in a name? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you want one that is strong and prim? One that conveys a sense of spunk and cheer, but still classic? One that is a showstopper? For instance, for me, I like a name that is rooted in that vintage-classic style, that feels familiar, but maybe a little but more perky or modern. For example, [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]. Similar name [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is just as vintage-classic, but she’s more staid and elegant than quirky [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]. Similar name [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] isn’t as vintage-classic, but she’s more fanciful and feminine.

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] - I can’t come up with a name better than [name_f]Alice[/name_f] herself. [name_f]Adele[/name_f] or [name_f]Adela[/name_f] are in a similar vein, though.
[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] - With cute [name_u]Romy[/name_u] for short? You could go with heavier [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], perhaps more of a statement, or more flirty [name_f]Rosanna[/name_f]. [name_f]Rosette[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosetta[/name_f] are unused gems as well.
[name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] - A true [name_m]French[/name_m] classic. She’s lovely, but not bold, and that’s okay. I’d suggest [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] or [name_f]Melisande[/name_f] as similar, more striking choices.
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] is the zesty [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] alternative, or [name_f]Charlotta[/name_f] for something richer.
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] - She could become [name_u]Averil[/name_u], but [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is a sweet, semi-dusty nature name. [name_f]Iris[/name_f] or [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] are similar, but little-used [name_f]Fern[/name_f] is a nice alternative.
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] - [name_m]Kick[/name_m] up the spice on [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] in a flash with [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f].
[name_f]Katarina[/name_f] - [name_f]Catriona[/name_f] is alluring to me. I prefer [name_f]Katharina[/name_f] as a spelling of this name, personally, over [name_f]Katarina[/name_f], or even [name_f]Katerina[/name_f]. Zippy [name_u]Kit[/name_u] is fun all on her own.
[name_f]Isabel[/name_f] - [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] isn’t used much, and [name_f]Isabeau[/name_f] makes a statement. [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] is romantic and deep, whereas [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is even more classic. [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] is just as vintage and sweet, but a little more lilting and playful. [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f], too, is a statement name that feels, much like [name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f], strong and firm. [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] is more romantic than [name_f]Isabel[/name_f], [name_f]Claribel[/name_f] is quirky and sweet.
[name_f]Seraphine[/name_f] - [name_f]Seraphine[/name_f] is a fair statement herself. I’d say similar-sounding [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] works as an alternative.
[name_f]Mariana[/name_f] - [name_f]Mary[/name_f] names can be tough. My new find is [name_f]Mariel[/name_f], preferred over [name_f]Marielle[/name_f], or the fun place-name [name_f]Marietta[/name_f].
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] - Nobody uses [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] anymore, and [name_f]Louise[/name_f] is a dusty middle name, so why not use [name_f]Louisa[/name_f]? [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is a little more girly chic, whereas [name_f]Eloisa[/name_f] is more frilly and romantic. [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] is similar but a little more rich (like [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] above).

Overall, I don’t find your list plain! I quite like [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], and [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] in particular.

[name_m]Lemon[/name_m]

I don’t think your list is plain at all. I love [name_f]Mariana[/name_f],[name_f]Madeleine[/name_f](especially this spelling), [name_f]Isabel[/name_f], and [name_f]Louisa[/name_f].

Oh, thank you guys for the reassurance. I guess I was overthinking it. Sometimes I do that too much.

@lemon

A bit of a combination: The perfect recipe of a name for myself would consist of a classic and strong element, a sense of spunk, and a little bit of charm thrown in.

I think my style of girl names is a mix between vintage and classic.

I love your description of [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]. It’s so charming.
I’ve been thinking about [name_f]Iris[/name_f] a lot lately, but more for a middle name. Being that [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] and [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] are both nature names I don’t want to get too theme-y.

[name_u]Kit[/name_u]! [name_m]How[/name_m] did I not remember [name_u]Kit[/name_u]?! I’m not into nickname-y names, but I love [name_u]Kit[/name_u]. Kitkat would be the cutest nickname.

I really like the [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] spelling, but I worry about my future child having to always say ‘[name_f]Isabel[/name_f] with an o’ all the time. [name_f]Isabeau[/name_f] is very sweet. Adding it to my list. I like it for the middle.

I love [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] and all it variants. So gorgeous! [name_f]Melisande[/name_f] is pretty, but there might be some pronunciation issues.

I also really like [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] and [name_f]Adela[/name_f].

Thank you so much!

Honestly, your style feels very familiar to me because it’s similar to mine, with the exception of [name_f]Katarina[/name_f], [name_f]Seraphine[/name_f], and [name_f]Mariana[/name_f] - I’m not as feminine as you, I don’t think! Ha.

Isn’t [name_u]Kit[/name_u] amazing? I was tempted to add it to my list as a first name at one time. I’m enchanted with [name_f]Tess[/name_f] and [name_u]Kit[/name_u] as sisters, because both are vintage nicknames. Throw a long, elegant middle name in there and you’re good, right?

Totally with you on the [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] spelling potentially being confusing, but at the same time, I think [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] probably has the same issue. “[name_f]Isabel[/name_f] with one L, not [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f],” you know? Everyone I personally know named [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] is [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]! In rank, my favorite spellings are [name_f]Isabel[/name_f], [name_f]Isobel[/name_f], and [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]. I am not a big fan of the overly flouncy -belle endings for most names…

If you like [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f], you probably might like [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f]? One of my absolute favorite [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] variants is [name_f]Margaretta[/name_f]! [name_f]Love[/name_f] it. [name_f]Retta[/name_f] is such an interesting nickname option to me. I am also liking [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] more and more.

PS [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] seem like such pretty sister names!

I like several of the names on your list and I’m really into out there names. I love [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], and [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]. They’re not unusual but they’re not plain either.

[name_f]Love[/name_f] this one!

[name_f]Louisa[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], and [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] are my favorites.

If your list is too plain, then I don’t know what my list is! A lot of the names on my list is a more popular than names on your list. [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Rachel[/name_f], [name_f]Liliana[/name_f]/[name_f]Lillian[/name_f], [name_f]Eva[/name_f], [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], etc. are more popular than most of your favorites, I think. I have a few more obscure ones ([name_f]Eleni[/name_f], [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], [name_f]Arianne[/name_f]), but most are pretty tied to popular options ([name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Ariana[/name_f], [name_f]Elena[/name_f]), and have common nicknames ([name_f]Ellie[/name_f]/[name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f]/[name_f]Emmy[/name_f], [name_u]Ari[/name_u]).

Sometimes we get a bit bored with our favorites because we love them so long and steadily, but that doesn’t make them any less full of merit! They’re still great names. Sometimes it just helps to look every now and then, or even to add a wee bit of fresh meat. I think [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], and [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] would be pretty with your other favorites. I’ve been really loving these rare -ella names (like [name_f]Ariella[/name_f], Crisella, [name_f]Fiorella[/name_f], [name_f]Luella[/name_f], etc.!) and might be a nice substitute for [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] (not that I’m suggesting replacing it! [name_f]Heaven[/name_f] forbid, haha. I’m always happy to see [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], or a variant, on someone’s list!).

A few other random ideas:

Madelief (crushing on this so hard lately, and I promote it anywhere I can! It’s the Dutch word for daisy. prn. mad-eh-leef)
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f]
[name_f]Regina[/name_f]
[name_f]Rowena[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliska[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliora[/name_f]
[name_f]Violetta[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Zinnia[/name_f]
[name_f]Nola[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]

Good luck!

You know, I think Nameberry can make us second guess our favourite names! They become “common” because we see them so often here, but remember that they’re quite uncommon in the “real world”. I really love almost all of your names, especially [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] and don’t think they’re plain at all!

Ditto! I think a lot of your names are actually quite unusual, they’re just popular and well-loved amongst berries. You have that a nice vintagey/slightly old lady vibe going on that’s popular on NB.

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] - I love this name a lot, as it reminds me of the curious [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] [name_u]Carroll[/name_u] heroine. I’ve seen the [name_f]Alys[/name_f] spelling in several retellings which gives it a flair, and a spunky middle name could spice it up. [name_f]Azalea[/name_f] might be a nice alternative, if you so choose.
[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] - does feel a little stuffy to me. [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f] are a tad more interesting.
[name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] - easily brightened up with a nickname, like [name_f]Maddy[/name_f], [name_f]Lin[/name_f], [name_f]Lina[/name_f], or [name_f]Della[/name_f].
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - [name_u]Caro[/name_u] makes for a spunky nickname, otherwise, [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] has more character.
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] - [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] or [name_u]Averil[/name_u], perhaps?
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] - [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] would be the most obvious exchange.
[name_f]Katarina[/name_f] - I see this as very spunky, a spunky Russian bombshell.
[name_f]Isabel[/name_f] - [name_m]Plenty[/name_m] spicy, methinks. [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] is a little more interesting, though.
[name_f]Seraphine[/name_f] - Definitely interesting.
[name_f]Mariana[/name_f] - [name_f]Miranda[/name_f] has some more spunk.
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] - [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], [name_f]Luella[/name_f].

Some spunky middle names that might work nicely with your current choices:
[name_f]Vera[/name_f]
[name_f]Juno[/name_f]
[name_f]Cate[/name_f]/[name_f]Kate[/name_f]

Other names you might like:
[name_f]Fiorella[/name_f]
[name_f]Miriam[/name_f]
[name_f]Natalia[/name_f]
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f]
[name_f]Anthea[/name_f]
[name_f]Maelys[/name_f]

[name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] and [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] are especially lovely and will outlast any trendier, frillier peers. A great list.

I like [name_f]Tess[/name_f] too. Sisters named [name_f]Katarina/name_f and [name_f]Theresa/name_f would be lovely.

[name_f]Katarina[/name_f], [name_f]Seraphine[/name_f] and [name_f]Mariana[/name_f] are actually the names that I consider less of my style. Sure I love them, but I’m more drawn to the other names on my list. They seem too frilly to me. It’s one of the reasons I prefer them as middles.

I agree with you about the -belle endings. The extra -le just seems unnecessary to me. It’s pronounced the exact same way in the end.

I do like [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f], but not for myself. Also the mother of my brothers name is very similar

Thank you! They are both for my grandmothers and I love them dearly

More comments! That’s what I get for leaving a thread open and not refreshing it. :stuck_out_tongue:

@ashthedreamer

Yep. I’m pretty sure that’s it. It’s been happening a lot to me lately. I still love the names, but they start to bore me if I think of them too much.

I love [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], but the nickname I like with it didn’t get much love on here. It’s still on my list, but more for a middle. I also like [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], but [name_f]Addie[/name_f] and [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] would be way too much for sisters and I just know [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] is going to be called [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] by my family.

I really like Madelief. It was on my old list of unusual names, but it’s too close to [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f].

[name_f]Regina[/name_f] has been growing on me since Once Upon A Time. I’m not sure if I like it enough to use. I love love love [name_f]Zinnia[/name_f]. Is it too unusual and theme with my other names though, [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] and [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] specifically?

Yeah. I hate second guessing. I think that might have been the reason I had tossed [name_f]Alice[/name_f] away the first time. I have to make sure I check the SSA Rankings sometimes because some names are less popular than I think. [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] hasn’t even made it into the top 100! I know [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] has, but I find [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] so much more charming and it’s in the 600s.

I love [name_f]Flora[/name_f] in your signature btw. I’ve noticed it around name forums and I’m so close to adding [name_f]Flora[/name_f] or [name_f]Florence[/name_f] to my list.

@bibliophile

I do like [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], but I love [name_f]Rosalyn[/name_f]. I don’t like how it looks though. It looks very tryndy with the -lyn in my eyes.

I really like [name_f]Natalia[/name_f] and [name_f]Maelys[/name_f]. [name_f]Fiorella[/name_f] reminds me of [name_f]Fiammetta[/name_f]. It’s a nice name, but my family would destroy it with their pronunciations.

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] - [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f]. This would have been our girl pick should baby been a girl.
[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] - [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] is fine- prefer [name_f]Rosalyn[/name_f]/[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]
[name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] - [name_f]Love[/name_f] this. :]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - like [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. :] Also like [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] / [name_f]Cora[/name_f].
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] - [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]! Such a cute spunky name!
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] - This is probably the only one I couldn’t see myself using from your list, just not my style. But it’s still pretty!
[name_f]Katarina[/name_f] - [name_f]LOVE[/name_f]. I have always preferred this name over [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], [name_f]Katrina[/name_f], etc.
[name_f]Isabel[/name_f] - Prefer [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], But love all the possible nicknames that come with this name.
[name_f]Seraphine[/name_f] - Beautiful!
[name_f]Mariana[/name_f] - Like this, prefer [name_f]Marina[/name_f], or even [name_f]Maven[/name_f].
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] - NMS, but it’s very pretty.

Your list is far from plain!

Thanks escg33k! I do like [name_f]Rosalyn[/name_f], but don’t like the look of -lyn. :frowning:

I would love more opinions and suggestions.
