Could Olsen be used as a first name? Is it too strongly linked to Mary Kate, Ashley, and Elizabeth?
One of our baby books has suggested sibling names for other baby names. Under our son Warren’s name Orson is listed as a suggested. For some reason I really strongly dislike Orson, but it made me think of Olsen, which for some reason I do like.
I feel silly for liking ANOTHER celebrity surname, as you’ve probably seen me swooning for Cyrus and Crosby lately. i still love Cyrus and am still working on my husband with it, but trying to keep other options to offer if he doesn’t come around to it.
i think it does work, although the celebrity association is strong enough that i assumed olsen was a girls’ name? i don’t think i’d be shocked to hear it on a boy but the fact that it could be male didn’t even cross my mind. i like the nickname olly though, it’s sweet! i prefer olsen to olson, the latter feels misspelled to me (even though i’m sure it does exist as a surname, i guess it’s just because olsen is more mainstream that olson looks “wrong”)
Olsen/Olson is definitely usable as a first name. It has a sort of old-time and surnamey feel, similar to [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m], [name_u]Crosby[/name_u], and even [name_m]Warren[/name_m]. I was born in 1995 so I definitely think of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], but they’re not relevant to the younger generation. If you want to feel old, anecdotally about five or six years ago I made a [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f] & [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] reference to a bunch of teenagers and they had NO idea who they were. And that was just a few years ago - I imagine young people are even more out of the loop with the [name_m]Olson[/name_m] twins now!
Despite the MK&A association, I think it has a strong, masculine sound and definitely picture it more on a boy than a girl.
[name_u]Olsen[/name_u] is cool! I like it and think it works. I’m aware of the celeb association, but I haven’t heard anything about them in years and couldn’t really tell you what they were famous for
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] don’t even cross my mind when I hear the name [name_u]Olsen[/name_u].
I think it is totally usable. [name_u]Olsen[/name_u] is a common enough last name (at least in the US) that I would guess most people know someone with the last name, especially in the midwest.
[name_u]Olsen[/name_u] is a very cool name! [name_m]Even[/name_m] cooler if you have a family tie to the name.
These are all definitely my style of boy name so I love it
[name_u]Olsen[/name_u] I view more of a celebrity name with mary kate and ashely more than any of the others you listed. However, I still think [name_u]Olsen[/name_u] is usable and probably wouldn’t be as closely related for younger generations.
I really like [name_u]Olsen[/name_u]! (And [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m], too!)
I do think of the [name_u]Olsen[/name_u] twins, but it’s not an overwhelming association. @Youssarian the same thing happened to me a few days ago—I made a reference and it completely went over the person’s head!
I prefer [name_u]Olsen[/name_u] on a girl, but I think it works for anyone and wouldn’t assume any gender if I heard the name.
[name_u]Olsen[/name_u] is completely usable as a first! It feels sort of classic vintage to me like the others [name_m]Warren[/name_m], [name_u]Crosby[/name_u], and [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m].
You could even have an [name_u]Ollie[/name_u] nn, like [name_m]Oliver[/name_m].
I get the [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] association, but it wouldn’t be my first thought when I heard it as a first name. I think this is a viable alternate for you for sure!
I had no idea who you were even talking about until I looked “Olsen” up, so I think you’re totally fine. In my mind I think [name_u]Olsen[/name_u] is a perfect match with [name_m]Warren[/name_m] because to me they both sound old-timey (only because I have a very old relative named [name_m]Warren[/name_m])
I honestly first think of the bratty girl from [name_m]Little[/name_m] House on the [name_u]Prairie[/name_u] (Nellie Olsen)! For that reason it seems more of a girl name to me, especially with the nickname [name_u]Sunny[/name_u]. However, it works on a boy too, and matches well with [name_m]Warren[/name_m]! [name_u]Ollie[/name_u] or [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] as nicknames?
