This may be a sensitive topic, but living in southern [name_u]California[/name_u], it’s a reality. I love the name [name_f]Paloma[/name_f], but every [name_f]Paloma[/name_f] I know (there are more than you’d think) is Mexican. I’m technically half Mexican, but not really in touch with that side, I barely have a tan, I don’t speak or understand Spanish, and my last name is very Danish. My question is, is [name_f]Paloma[/name_f] too ethnic, or can a white-washed girl like me get away with using it?
The only [name_f]Paloma[/name_f] I know of is [name_f]Paloma[/name_f] [name_f]Faith[/name_f], and she pulls it off pretty well. I think anyone can use it.
[name_f]Paloma[/name_f] is a gorgeous name, I think you can definitely use it! It doesn’t feel particularly ethnic to me or like a name that would only work on Mexican/Spanish people. It’s like [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] or [name_m]Sean[/name_m] to me, a name that is clearly from and commonly associated with a certain culture, but not weird to use on someone outside that culture at all.
I absolutely love [name_f]Paloma[/name_f]. What a gorgeous name. I would have the same hesitation about using it, but I think it would work for you.
I don’t see any issues with using [name_f]Paloma[/name_f]. It’s a lovely name.
Go for it! It’s lovely. It means [name_u]Dove[/name_u].
The only Palomas I know of are [name_f]Paloma[/name_f] [name_m]Picasso[/name_m] and [name_f]Paloma[/name_f] [name_f]Faith[/name_f]
[name_f]Paloma[/name_f] is beautiful and not out of reach.
My background is not Hispanic and we don’t live in a Hispanic area, yet I considered [name_f]Paloma[/name_f]. It’s beautiful and I don’t think it’s blatently Hispanic as say, [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] or [name_f]Juanita[/name_f].
[name_f]Paloma[/name_f] is not my style but I think it’s wearable on anyone. The actress [name_f]Caterina[/name_f] Scorsone has a baby named [name_f]Paloma[/name_f] [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] and she is not Hispanic. She calls her baby [name_f]Molly[/name_f] which is darling.
I think it’s gorgeous. Maybe [name_f]Paloma[/name_f] is a good start to embracing your Mexican side anyway! Your daughter might appreciate that connection to her heritage.
I don’t see any problem with using [name_f]Paloma[/name_f]. I will also point out that many cultures/ethnicities use names from other cultures. Names are being used less and less as ethnic, racial, or cultural identifies.
Yes, you can use it. [name_m]Just[/name_m] because you’re white passing doesn’t mean you can’t use a name from your own heritage.
The only person I know with the name [name_f]Paloma[/name_f] was born in Germany. Her mother is [name_m]German[/name_m] and her father is American. Neither parent is Hispanic. Go ahead and use the name!
Thank you, everyone! I wasn’t aware that there were so many [name_f]Paloma[/name_f]'s out there! [name_f]Paloma[/name_f] is definitely back on the short list!
When I hear the name [name_f]Paloma[/name_f] I immediately think of [name_f]Paloma[/name_f] Josse from The Elegance of the Hedgehog, who is a white [name_m]French[/name_m] girl. I think you’re good, though people in your area might react somewhat differently.
[name_f]Paloma[/name_f] strikes me as a very inter-continental choice - it’s used in a variety of cultures, from my understanding. I think you should be fine.
