So my youngest is 9.5 months and still nursing, especially at night. I have been tracking my temperature (BBT) for a few months and am pretty certain I haven’t ovulated yet. But every couple weeks I have spotting, often over several days, usually so light a pad is hardly even necessary. A few times it’s briefly been a bit heavier, complete with very mild cramping. Seems unrelated to other activity. Have others experienced this? He’s my 4th baby, and this is the longest I’ve gone postpartum without getting my regular cycle back (the others were 9 months, 8 months, and 4 months.) I think that’s because I’ve been co-sleeping with this one and he nurses off and on much of the night.
I remember having what seemed like a very light period around 7 months pp with my first, before I went regular again, but I haven’t had this much spotting before. I assumed it was just my body gearing up for the real thing but am starting to wonder if I need to talk to my OBGYN.
If you’re concerned, absolutely talk to you OBGYN. But it sounds pretty normal for what I know about the post-partum time to me, especially since your periods aren’t back yet.
Pinch of salt as I’ve not ever been post-partum yet, but it doesn’t sound distinctly worrying.
Something I’ve heard is to always check in with your doctor if your cycle has changed noticeably. It may be completely normal but it’s worth talking about even if just for peace of mind.
It sounds pretty normal to me, especially since you’re still breastfeeding, but like others have said: it’s best to talk to your doctor or obgyn if you’re having any doubts.
[name_f]My[/name_f] youngest is the only one of my children I’ve breastfed, and when he stopped nursing I got back on my period within the next 4 weeks. While breastfeeding I sometimes had a little cramping, but no actual spotting or bleeding.
Thanks all! I sent a message to my OBGYN this morning via my patient portal. I think this is probably normal, but as pp’s said, it’s worth asking for peace of mind.
My hunch is that my cycle will restart the instant he starts sleeping through the night. That’s how it was with my 3rd babe. It’s just that I had begun to wonder if something else is causing the spotting.
