Naming an actual child is still wayy off in the future for me but I lurk here sometimes out of curiosity and wanted to know what you all think.
I’ve always liked the name [name_f]Roxanne[/name_f]. I like the sound of it, and I like that it’s feminine without being “frilly.” I think its also got a timelessness to it, since I can imagine it on someone in ancient Greece (like [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] the Great’s wife), or a professional woman today, or a 24th century spaceship captain.
On the other hand . . . there’s that song by The Police. It wouldn’t bother me if it was just a well-known song, but the woman’s, erm, occupation in the song makes me a bit uncomfortable with the association.
I really like [name_f]Roxanne[/name_f] (although I prefer [name_f]Roxane[/name_f]). But I don’t know if the Police song is an issue. It’s the first thing that pops into my mind when I see or hear the name. But I’m old enough to remember when it was on the radio all the time. I don’t know how popular or well-known the song will continue to be.
Yes, it’s useable. I know a [name_f]Roxanne[/name_f] in her early 20s, and while she does get the occasional comment about the song, it doesn’t bother her.
I love [name_f]Roxanne[/name_f] and [name_f]Roxane[/name_f]!
To me it is strong and funky without being masculine or made-up. I guess if you were really wary of the association with the Police song, you could go with something similar in sound, such as [name_f]Maxine[/name_f] or Oxanne / [name_f]Oksana[/name_f].
Honestly, it does makes me think of the Police song and the 80s in general, but I am terribly old-fashioned, so probably nobody from your kid’s generation will get it. I think it is usable.
I think it’s totally usable. While I do think of the song, I also have fond memories of reading [name_m]Cyrano[/name_m] de Bergerac so it feels very literary to me. I like it!
I like [name_f]Roxanne[/name_f]! I actually asked nameberry perps about [name_f]Roxana[/name_f] a few months ago, i think [name_f]Roxie[/name_f] is so great.
Maybe its because I decided to put on Chicago yesterday, but The Police song was not the first thing that popped into my head.
But even if it was, I still think its a usable name. I Knew a [name_f]Roxanne[/name_f] in high school (although she went by [name_f]Roxi[/name_f]) and she never had any problems with the name.
Late on the bandwagon, sorry, but just saw this post and have to add that I named my daughter [name_f]Roxana[/name_f]. [name_f]Roxie[/name_f] for short. She’s just turned 1! I love all the variations of the name, which is lucky because we’ve found a lot of people struggle with [name_f]Roxana[/name_f] (even family members). We get [name_f]Roxanna[/name_f]/[name_f]Roxanne[/name_f] all the time!
[name_f]Roxanne[/name_f] is definitely usable. If you’re concerned about the song though, I think [name_f]Roxana[/name_f] is just different enough that it wouldn’t have as many “like the song” comments.
