I recently came across the name [name_u]Rue[/name_u] and thought it was unique and different. What would you think if you met a girl named [name_u]Rue[/name_u]?
I think it’s cute and spunky, but a little Hunger-Games-y. I’d like it if I came across the name on a girl, but might secretly question if her parents were big HG fans.
It’s not my personal style, but I would think of someone who is maybe spunky or sassy. I am not sure if it matters or not, but it may not match the style of your other girls’ names. If you are worried about that, you could always use [name_u]Rue[/name_u] as a middle name. I find middles a good place for a surprising name.
I don’t think its a weird name - if I heard this five years ago I wouldn’t think anything of it.
However, although I never read the books or saw the movies, I still think of this as the hunger games character. I don’t think its a bad association, and I know the name did jump in popularity but I don’t think it got popular enough to be problematic, plus it’s a legitimate, established name and not made up like [name_f]Katniss[/name_f].
If you love it, I’d use it anyway, but expect quite a few “like The Hunger Games?” Comments (which will be more geared towards you than your child, I don’t think the association would affect her much)
I honestly think of [name_u]Rue[/name_u] McClanahan. The actress who played on The [name_u]Golden[/name_u] Girls. I think it is a find name, and I don’t think most people will say Hunger Games automatically.
I’d think it’s spunky and sweet. Wouldn’t think of Hunger Games even though I have seen the movies.
I love it. I dont think about The Hunger Games. I think it would be great with a longer, more feminine name in the middle.
I like it as a nickname for [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], but not so much on its own, mostly because it’s the [name_m]French[/name_m] word for street.
[name_f]Katniss[/name_f] isn’t “made up,” for the record, any more than [name_u]Sage[/name_u], [name_f]Lavender[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], or [name_f]Heather[/name_f] are; it’s a type of plant life that just happened to get some attention thanks to [name_u]Collins[/name_u]. But she didn’t just pull it out of thin air. Its scientific name is Sagittaria sagittifolia and it’s native to the U.S. If it weren’t for the Hunger Games association, people would just class it with other obscure botanical names and it would be no more weird or made up than [name_f]Zinnia[/name_f] or [name_f]Forsythia[/name_f] - just unusual.
Anyway - I quite like [name_u]Rue[/name_u]! [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t worry about the Hunger Games connection. No one will care in 2040, and even if they do, she was a good character. [name_u]Rue[/name_u]'s short, sweet, very easy to spell, but memorable. It has a lot going for it. Winner in my humble opinion. And it actually isn’t as popular as you’d think; there were only 31 born last year. Far from mega-popular.
I would think her parents were big fans of the Hunger Games.
I think of “[name_u]Rue[/name_u] the day” and also the [name_m]French[/name_m] word for street. Also, in Australia, it sounds like the commonly used word “Roo”, short for kangaroo. But elsewhere it could work.
I love the name but an alternative spelling is [name_u]Roux[/name_u] ([name_m]French[/name_m] for a red head if I remember correctly). That way you can maybe detach yourself from the Hunger Games and “street”.
I like it, but I prefer it as a nickname for [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
The first thing I would think of is the Hunger Games. The second thing I would think of is her parents rued the day she was born.
I dont think its weird at all. I find it adorable actually.
I see the appeal, but its the french word for “[name_m]Street[/name_m]”, and there’s also the saying " [name_u]Rue[/name_u] the day", meaning to bitterly regret a moment. Not the best associations.
I love it but more as a NN for [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] or [name_f]Prudence[/name_f].
I think [name_u]Rue[/name_u] is cute and spunky. Sweet for a little girl. But I don’t think [name_u]Rue[/name_u] would work on an adult. I would prefer as a nickname for [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] as that feels more ageless and would work better. Also has a side note [name_u]Rue[/name_u] as a stand alone name does feel very Hunger Games as others have commented and I would wonder if that was why they chose [name_u]Rue[/name_u].
I do think of the Hunger Games immediately. While I like the sound and look of [name_u]Rue[/name_u], I cannot get past the fact that it means to bitterly regret something. That’s not a definition I’d want to be associated with my name…
I like [name_u]Roux[/name_u] better. However even that is still only on my guilty pleasure list because of the Hunger Games connection.
