Is Samson too "macho"?

I don’t tend to like very “macho” names for boys, like [name_m]Cannon[/name_m], [name_m]Gunner[/name_m] or [name_m]Maverick[/name_m]. I’m not keen on the hard sounds and I also don’t like the implication that boys are expected to be strong, warlike, and even violent or destructive.

However, I do love the name [name_m]Samson[/name_m], with its lovely meaning of “sun”. But does the association with the Biblical strongman make this one another “macho” boys’ name?

Hmm…I don’t think it is too “macho” at all. I actually think the name has a rather sweet sound to it, despite the Biblical association. [name_m]Even[/name_m] then, given the story, I think it is a bit of macho man antithesis, seeing as how [name_m]Samson[/name_m] had a downfall related to his strength.

[name_m]Samson[/name_m] doesn’t feel “macho” to me! Especially since its sound feels light and soft

No, but I always picture a big slobbery dog. I do think it’s a great way to get to [name_u]Sam[/name_u].

[name_m]Samson[/name_m] doesn’t seem macho to me at all! Very sweet & friendly

You know what, I don’t think os [name_m]Samson[/name_m] as “macho” at all! It’s funny but when I think of the [name_m]Samson[/name_m] and [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] story I always think of [name_m]Samson[/name_m] as this guy who was given all of this strength by God and all but never really chose it. I feel like he was just a guy who fell madly in love with this beautiful woman named [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] and while she loved him as well she was pressured by men a lot more powerful than she was and saw no alternative but to cut her lover’s hair off. It’s a tragic love story and it’s no wonder it was turned into movies and a spectacular [name_f]Opera[/name_f]. Lastly, I think that this view that I have of [name_m]Samson[/name_m] is largely due to [name_f]Regina[/name_f] Spektor’s beautiful song:

[name_m]Long[/name_m] story short I think [name_m]Samson[/name_m] is adorable and very boy-next-door and friendly thanks to the nickname [name_u]Sam[/name_u]. I would love to meet a little [name_m]Samson[/name_m] as opposed to yet another [name_m]Samuel[/name_m]!

Thanks all, glad it doesn’t come across as I feared.

@lailanotlilah Thanks for the link! I love [name_f]Regina[/name_f] Spektor and am actually enjoying a bit of a [name_f]Regina[/name_f] revival at the moment

I think it’s actually pretty ‘soft’ sounding. It’s just the connotation, but honestly I don’t think that would come up too much past the first time someone meets him.
