Is Tabitha so terrible?

The other day, I mentioned to a few friends the name I’ve had picked out for a girl since I was 11 years old: [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]. I was met with several groans and an, “Oh, no, she’ll be made fun of [name_u]FOREVER[/name_u]!”

Maybe I spend too much time on Nameberry, but [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] doesn’t seem like an “out there” name to me at all. I suppose in the sea of Emmas and Chloes it’s a little different, but certainly not that bad.

So… thoughts on [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]?

If you love [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f], than you should use it. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t let your friends opinions change it.
Personally, [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] feels really old to me, like [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. But hey, [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] made her way back, why not [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]. NMS, but not horrible, not too out there. And I have to admit, [name_f]Tabby[/name_f] is a cute nickname.

I love it but a lot of people hate it.

I think it’s pretty easy to say, uncommon but not unheard of, and I like nature-y meanings.

I don’t think I’m going to get to use it, though, because it’s not really my husband’s style, and he has a rather strong sense of style.

I like it more than some Nameberry favourites, honestly.

My best friend is named [name_f]Tabatha[/name_f], so I like it. She prefers to be called her full name though, not [name_f]Tibby[/name_f] or Bitty or [name_f]Tabby[/name_f].

It’s fine, and I don’t see why she would be teased. Any name is teasable, but [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] is a familiar name that’s easy to pronounce. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t worry about a handful of naysayers. It’s very pretty.

Went to university with a [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f], she was definitely the only one on campus with that name. We called her Tabs for short. It’s clunky vintage and has a lot of personality, if you love it, I would go for it.

I have always loved this name. To me it’s no different than [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f], [name_f]Samantha[/name_f], [name_f]Savanna[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Miranda[/name_f], etc. They are all 3 syllable names ending in a. I have noticed that people do seem iffy about it but for us it was one of our top 5.

I love [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]. It’s spunky, unusual but still easy to pronounce and remember. I would go for it!

I’ve loved the name [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] since I was a kid. Wish my husband did, too! If you love it, use it.

If you love it, use it and ignore the negative responses. It’s not ‘out there’, it’s well known but uncommon, very feminine and as far as I can tell, doesn’t sound like anything awful/teaseable. (I am not sure why they thought she would get teased based on the name…).
Go with your heart!

My oldest (half) sister is named [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] (why yes, that IS very close to my name, [name_f]Agatha[/name_f])… and she loves it. [name_m]Just[/name_m] like [name_f]Agatha[/name_f], she’s the only one around… and nobody ever has to say “[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] B.”… but nobody ever mispronounces or misspells it, either.

I don’t see the teasing potential at all. I know a little [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] (age 3). It’s a great name.

Use it! It’s an awesome name! I love that [name_u]Abby[/name_u] and [name_f]Betty[/name_f] are viable nn’s too!

I think [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] is a great name! She would fit in with the Matildas and Penelopes and comes with the great nickname of [name_f]Tabby[/name_f] (or [name_f]Tibby[/name_f], but I like [name_f]Tabby[/name_f]).

[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] is actually on our shortlist for any future daughter we may have. It’s unique yet familiar and has some adorable nn options like [name_f]Tabby[/name_f], [name_f]Tibby[/name_f], Tabs, etc. It definitely doesn’t feel out of place and I think it’s a great pick! Good luck!

My little sister is called [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] and has had nothing but lovely and positive comments on her name. I think it’s beautiful and have always been a tad jealous that I wasn’t named [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] instead!

I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]. Unfortunately, my other half does not. I really wouldn’t let your friends’ opinion sway you. It’s a great name, simple yet not overdone! [name_f]Do[/name_f] it!

I think it is cute. Not sure why she would be teased. I have known a few [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]'s and they were not teased.

I dunno. It sounds fine to me.

Very “Bewitched” but then of course I am 51 and love Bewitched.

It has a bit of a thin, wavery sound to it, the t and th sounds.

I love [name_f]Tabbie[/name_f] as a nickname (I love cats).

[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]'s one of those names that’s really old, but it’s got some vintage flair to it and it’s still not received very well. I do think of [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] as a bit of a cat name, since [name_f]Tabby[/name_f] is a nickname, and that’s directly linked to kittens.

[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] is a name I would use only if it had significant meaning to me and if I could call her [name_u]Abby[/name_u].
