Question for any Spanish speakers out there! Our daughters attend an international school where they learn in Spanish for half of the day and in [name_f]English[/name_f] the other half. The name [name_f]Leona[/name_f] literally means lioness in Spanish. [name_f]My[/name_f] question is, knowing my little one will be attending the same school, would it be silly to name her [name_f]Leona[/name_f]? Would it be considered an odd choice for native Spanish speakers (parents/teachers) at her school? Is this name used in Spanish speaking countries at all? Is [name_f]Leonie[/name_f] more acceptable? Thanks!

I’ve never heard anyone with that name (animal names in general aren’t very common in Latin [name_u]America[/name_u]!!) but if I met someone named [name_f]Leona[/name_f] I wouldn’t think her name was silly at all! Spunky and an interesting choice for sure but no different than meeting a kid named Lioness-- although [name_f]Leona[/name_f] is way cooler imo
I wouldn’t think it’s weird at all! Especially since the name [name_m]Leon[/name_m] is commonly used in Spanish, which literally means lion.
I’m not a Spanish speaker but I asked my husband who is, and he doesn’t think it’s weird But it would have a slightly different pronunciation in Spanish vs. [name_f]English[/name_f].
