Is there a formal version for Riley?

So lately I’ve started to really love the name [name_u]Riley[/name_u], but not for a full name. To me, it’s very young and cutesy, great for a kind or even a teenager but not really an adult. Is there a name riley can be be the nickname of, or does it actually have a formal version? thanks! :stuck_out_tongue:

[name_f]Rilian[/name_f] is a character in the Chronicles of [name_f]Narnia[/name_f].

ETA: Sorry, I didn’t realize this was in the boys forum.

[name_u]Riley[/name_u] is a common surname, so complete on its own.

That’s a tough one! I’ve never thought about it. I have a friend from high school whose oldest daughter’s name is [name_u]Riley[/name_u]. She is a teenager now, and it has aged with her very well. I think of her as athletic and independent.

If I were you, I would just go for [name_u]Riley[/name_u].

I tried to come up with some more formal name options, but was struggling.

[name_u]Riley[/name_u], short for [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] or [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f] (but then you have Twilight to contend with)
[name_u]Riley[/name_u], short for [name_u]Hillary[/name_u] (but then there are strong political associations, assuming you live in the U.S.)
[name_u]Riley[/name_u], short for [name_f]Elvira[/name_f] (this probably sounds the most like [name_u]Riley[/name_u], but I wouldn’t want to go through life as [name_f]Elvira[/name_f])
[name_u]Riley[/name_u], short for [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] (not the same vowel sound, but I think both are lovely, with a Celtic vibe)
[name_u]Riley[/name_u], short for [name_u]Reagan[/name_u] (again, very political)

Good luck!

I am sorry – for some reason, I assumed you were looking for girl names. I just realized this was posted under the baby boys forum. Are you looking for formal variations of [name_u]Riley[/name_u] for a boy? And I’m just curious – where do you live? Are you in the U.S. or another country?

[name_u]Riley[/name_u] could be a nickname for [name_m]Ryland[/name_m] - not my personal style, but it is in the Top 500. They’re both surnames but [name_m]Ryland[/name_m] feels a bit more buttoned up. You could also use [name_u]Ryan[/name_u].

Yes I’m looking for guy names xD I’m from [name_u]America[/name_u] I like the [name_u]Ryan[/name_u] idea! Why didn’t I think of that o.o

I also like the idea of [name_u]Ryan[/name_u].

There’s always [name_m]Riddley[/name_m] for a more formal version, but [name_m]Ryland[/name_m] seems the most plausible : )
