We have an [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and a [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] who often go by [name_f]Edie[/name_f] and [name_f]Margot[/name_f]. We are expecting a third little girl in [name_f]May[/name_f] and really love the name [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] ([name_f]Aggie[/name_f]) which was the name of my late grandmother. But, we recently learned that the three little girls in Despicable Me are called [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], and [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]. Is that too strange? I’m afraid people will think that we named our daughters after the characters in Despicable Me, which we haven’t even watched.
I think it’s a great sibset! [name_m]Even[/name_m] if it is the same names as the movie, you don’t have that association. I’m sure people will ask, but if you don’t mind the questions, go for it!
We have a daughter named [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] and people always ask and assume we named her after the Hunger Games character, which we did not. But I wouldn’t change her name because we love it!
Best of luck!
([name_m]Just[/name_m] saw your other post! I also like [name_f]Frances[/name_f] and [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] and their nickname potential with your other girls! Also, [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] as a namesake for your grandmother would be precious.)
I’m not familiar with Despicable Me, so I can’t say, … but, oh, does [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] nn [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] sound wonderful with your sibset! Added to the fact that is has so much personal significance, it would be hard to pass up.
As someone who has seen despicable me, I would probably think of the movie relatively quickly hearing all three names. However, I do think that they’re related enough to each other and not that unique, that I wouldn’t be suprised to hear they weren’t named after the movie. I think if pp named her next daughter [name_f]Katniss[/name_f], it would be practically impossible not to believe they were not named after the movie, but [name_f]Edie[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f] and [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] I can totally see. I would maybe suggest watching the movie, just to make sure you’re ok with the potential for continuous reference to it.
I say if you love it, go for it. As a little kid, I bet I would have loved to have a character in a movie have the same name as me!
I didn’t think of the connection at all, and Despicable Me was actually the first movie I saw in theaters! [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is the perfect sibling to [name_f]Margot[/name_f] and [name_f]Edith[/name_f], and I absolutely love this.
I’ve not seen the Despicable Me films… but what great names for sisters!
I second this!
I did think of Despicable Me right away- but mostly because I remember thinking what an adorable sibset it was when I watched the movie!! In the movies, they go by full names— so if people saw your girls’ full names, I don’t think it would be an obvious connection because she’s [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], and if they go by nns I again don’t think the reference would come up much. Def not a dealbreaker [name_f]IMO[/name_f], I love the names!!
I haven’t seen the film so I wouldn’t ever have made the connection. I guess it depends on whether you mind people wondering or asking you if you used these names because of the movie. They really do all go well together, it’s so crazy that all three names were used in the film.
I came across someone who had daughters [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] and [name_f]Anna[/name_f], before Frozen was out. I make more of a connection with that and I haven’t seen that film either.
Seen the film, but clearly not paid much attention as I didn’t even know this. I do know the cute ‘unicorn’ girl in it is [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] but I’m not familiar with the connection. Still, it’s a cute sibset, and if you don’t mind people asking about the connection, then go for it.
Maybe as mn to avoid the movie thing.
[name_u]Vivian[/name_u] [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalyn[/name_f] [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]
[name_f]Mildred[/name_f] [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]
[name_f]Lillian[/name_f] [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]
The sibset is absolutely lovely, and I didn’t think of the connection at all, so I personally say go for it! [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] complements [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and [name_f]Margot[/name_f] perfectly, and as it’s also a tribute to your late grandma, I think that’s just another reason to use it.
I know I was the person who initially brought it up in your other thread, but I wanted to say a little bit more. I would recommend watching some of the franchise as a pp suggested to make sure you would be okay with the connection if it was noticed. You do have the added bonus that [name_f]Margo[/name_f] is actually [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and [name_f]Edith[/name_f] goes by [name_f]Edie[/name_f] that would make it a little less obvious at first. Maybe ask some of your family/friends or even kids your daughters ages if they would make the connection? I think the movies tend to focus a little more on the Minions and [name_m]Gru[/name_m] then the children so it may not be as obvious to some.
I know that this is something that I tend to think about a little more often as I am a huge Disney fan and most people in my life know this. so when i find names I like I have to weigh how much a name is connected to Disney and whether an average fan would pick up on that (i.e. [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], [name_f]Flora[/name_f], [name_m]Roger[/name_m], [name_m]Jasper[/name_m]).
All in all I wouldn’t call it a deal breaker at all, especially as a dealbreaker, I would again just make sure you are okay with any connections that might be made to the franchise. The three names are adorable together and I don’t think you could go wrong with any of your options.
Know that people will say “oh like the girls in despicable me!” As long as that does not bother you, go for it. You have a great reason to use [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] and all 3 names are just gorgeous. Your daughters may even watch the movie when they get older and think it’s a fun connection. My kids would love something like that. And yes, what a kid enjoys won’t necessarily translate well to adulthood. But I don’t think those movies are popular enough that they will feel those characters identities following them into adolescence and beyond.
I have seen the movie and the first thing I remember thinking is ‘what a great sibset’ Added bonus is that the girls are pretty great, smart and kind. As suggested by pp I would recommend watching the movies just to check that you don’t mind your girls being compared to them.
The names work brilliantly together and the fact that [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is an honour name is lovely and exactly the reason you should use it. There’s a reason why they were picked for the girls in the movie, because they work so perfectly as a little sibset.
I really don’t think may people would know or recognize that. If they do I think you’d get positive reactions. The Girls have a great sister relationship in the movie. I see it as nothing less than sweet.
I immediately thought of the movie! A lot of people with kids aged 4-12 will think of the movie. And I’d avoid the name for that reason - unless there is absolutely no other name you love as much. If that’s the case, then by all means use it.
I say go for it. [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] are such sweet sister names, and the fact that it’s after your grandmother makes it even sweeter. I did think of the Despicable Me movies though. It’s not a bad association, the sisters are good girls. I don’t know if most people would think of Despicable Me because it’s not as popular as something like [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]. I know a girl named [name_u]Ariel[/name_u], and everyone thinks she’s named after the [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid. She’s not! But it’s a beautiful name and she still likes it. [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] “[name_f]Margot[/name_f]”, [name_f]Edith[/name_f] “[name_f]Edie[/name_f]”, and [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] “[name_f]Aggie[/name_f]” is such an adorable sibset!
I’m not familiar with the movie, so I don’t think it’s strange at all.
P.S. @danakatherine, you just made me feel so old…
I love Despicable me, and I’ll say, your sibset names did not make me think of it for multiple reasons:
-
They actually aren’t the same names. [name_f]Margot[/name_f] is a nickname for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. That, in itself, means you didn’t name your kids after all of them.
-
The order is wrong. [name_f]Margot[/name_f] is the oldest in the movie. I only connect things like this if they are the exact same order, or very rare names not on my radar previously, like [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] and [name_f]Katniss[/name_f]. Those two out of order would make me think of Hunger Games because they are so unusual and that series is the only place I had heard of them. [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f]/[name_f]Margaret[/name_f], and [name_f]Edith[/name_f] are all very well established, well known names.
-
You will never get the full three names exactly as they are in the movie at the same time. If you use [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], you will likely be using [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] in that context. If you are using [name_f]Margot[/name_f], you will likely be using [name_f]Edie[/name_f] and [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] at the same time.
I say go for it. They are lovely names and all you have to say is “No, we didn’t.” I do understand if it gets trying over the years to hear the same question again and again, but I don’t really think that would be an issue. And once again, the names are timeless, not trendy, so you have that going for you in the disassociation from the movie.
