First thoughts & opinions?
I think [name_f]Viola[/name_f] is lovely if the O is emphasized, and I love the thought of violet flowers and [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m]'s use of it, but at the same time, same problem with violet really, it does get pronounced Vile sort of. But the syllable split is a little different, like Vyla really to rhyme with [name_f]Myla[/name_f], not Vile-a. And of course it has a negative meaning in Spanish (BUT I’ll point out in Spanish just like in English it evokes violets and the musical instrument viola has the same name in Spanish as the negative Spanish meaning, so I don’t think it’s the same as the English word violate/rape!).
It’s complicated I suppose but I don’t think anything about it when meeting one! Really when I hear it I mainly think of [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] and of the actress [name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_m]Davis[/name_m]. I do think it’s pretty.
PS O not emphasized like vye OH la or something, but just said like vye-a-la.
I prefer [name_f]Violet[/name_f] myself…[name_f]Viola[/name_f] sounds kinds of silly and reminds me of the instrument.
I love [name_f]Viola[/name_f]. It’s one of my favorites!
I love [name_f]Viola[/name_f]. I’ve never thought of “vile” in regards to it before. I pronounce it with a clear O In the middle, I just love it.
I really think it’s pretty. I know a woman in her late 80s with the name who is just so full of life and that’s really the reason I love the name so much. She pronounces her name [name_f]VI[/name_f]-ola. I’ve heard people say VEE-ola, but I think the way she pronounces her own name is gorgeous.
For some reason (I think it’s the ‘ull’ sound), to me it is. It just isn’t a pretty sound. But I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]!
I love [name_f]Viola[/name_f] or [name_f]Violetta[/name_f]! I definitely prefer them to [name_f]Violet[/name_f].
I like this one. I think it’s a pretty name.
I love [name_f]Viola[/name_f]. My grandmama was named [name_f]Viola[/name_f], so I’ve always found it very spunky and classy.
I don’t love it. There are prettier V names out there.
It’s been my #1 name for ages, so I obviously don’t think it’s vile. If you’re concerned, there’s always the vie-OH-la pronunciation. Or VEE-oh-la like the instrument.
Why? My favorite pronunciation is vee-OH-luh which is not vile at all. And,of course, not violent.
I think [name_f]Viola[/name_f]'s beautiful! I say it differently to most people it seems; my pronunciation is “Vee-OH-la”.
I love [name_f]Viola[/name_f] Go watch ‘[name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] in [name_f]Love[/name_f]’ if you’d like to heart it some more
I sort of like it pronounced VYE-oh-lah.
I like [name_f]Viola[/name_f]! I like [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_f]Violetta[/name_f] more, but [name_f]Viola[/name_f] is lovely! I don’t think “vile” at all. I think of beautiful violets, orchestra concerts (which I always remember fondly from high school!), and [name_f]Viola[/name_f] from Twelfth [name_m]Night[/name_m]! She’s such a strong and excellent role model for a woman (I’m not usually into the whole feminism thing–I appreciate those who stand for it, but I feel like there are more pressing matters on my heart!). She’s so strong, and yet she balances so well her femininity and her falling in love. I wished I loved [name_f]Viola[/name_f] more, because I love Twelfth [name_m]Night[/name_m] and [name_f]Viola[/name_f] is by far my favorite character. I would love to see more Violas in the world, though–it’s a beautiful name, with beautiful connotations.
I personally would not name a child [name_f]Viola[/name_f].
Hast thou read/seen Twelfth [name_m]Night[/name_m]? Then no, [name_f]Viola[/name_f] is not vile, she is awesome and Shakespearean.
