Is Violet really that popular?

With The Incredibles and Series of Unfortunate Events coming out during millennial adolescence, it makes sense that it would be on our lists.

But Nameberry suspects it could be #2[name_f][/name_f] in the future!

Does [name_f]Violet[/name_f] actually have the potential to be the next [name_f]Emma[/name_f] or [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]?

[name_f][/name_f]

I’ve always loved the name and don’t actually know any grown up nor baby Violets (I live in Los Angeles). But I’m hesitant to pick a name that could become so popular.

Thoughts?

I love Violet! One of my friends (here in Sydney) has a 13 year old Violet. At the time there was a lot of buzz about the name generally - due to both the spike in popularity of 1880s-1920s names & I’d say, Downton Abbey (Cora also suddenly a big name). This was when Jennifer G & Ben A called their daughter Violet.

If it gets to a top 5, I can’t imagine Violet staying there as long as Emma, Olivia & Charlotte etc, just because some of its sounds aren’t quite as universal (some think “violent”). I think it’s already had a good chance to get to the top and hasn’t. I also think while Bridgeton is keeping us regency focused, we’re starting to have other trends emerge - modern/word names, older Boomer etc.

It’s def not risk free but it wouldn’t be one I’d be concerned about. I myself stepped straight into a trend with my DD, Willa - no other Willa, but over half the girls in her class have short A ending and/or double L names (Lilla, Lily, Tilly, Millie, Mila, and even a Smill@). So it’s hard not to be completely out of a trend unless you really try not to - and even then that unusual name can be part of unusual name trend.

I don’t think it’s going to be #2[name_f][/name_f] (or anywhere in the top 10) in the future. And I’ve never met a [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. But I’ve also never met a [name_f]Luna[/name_f] or an [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], which are both in the top 10, so maybe where I live is just weird?

I agree with the comments above. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is a beautiful name with a timeless charm, and while it has been steadily rising in popularity on lists, it’s still far from reaching the widespread popularity of names like [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] or [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. Name trends can be unpredictable [name_f][/name_f]- some names peak quickly and fade, while others hold steady without becoming overly common.

[name_f][/name_f]

If you love the name and don’t personally know any Violets, that’s a great sign that it hasn’t become too widespread in your circles. If [name_f]Violet[/name_f] speaks to you, I’d say go for it!

I have encountered a number of little Violets more recently, along with one teen, but not anywhere near the number of Olivias/Amelias/Mia/Charlottes etc. That said, I am in the UK and it isn’t as popular here (yet)

I could see it rising into the Top 10 - could it be #2? I guess it could be - Ruby rose up pretty suddenly like that and they give me a similar feel - well established but fresh feeling? - but if Violet did reach #1/#2, I feel like it would be more of a brief stay in that spot, before falling again?

I live in the U.S. Midwest, have 3 young kids, and only know one little [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. I’d be surprised to see it reach #2[name_f][/name_f]. I expect to see [name_f]Everly[/name_f] & [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] reach that high, based on the usage around here.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] is wonderful! Use it if you love it!

Anecdotally, it is the most common name I’ve seen for young children around me. I’m not even in a very child-centric circle, and I know 4 Violets (and Stellas too, but I digress). However, I don’t exactly see it reaching [name_f]Emma[/name_f] or [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] levels of popularity honestly. I still think it’s a nice name.

I would not be surprised at all if it becomes top 10. [name_f][/name_f] It’s already number 16 in the US! [name_f][/name_f] It is admittedly much less popular in your state (well, within reason, it’s #29[name_f][/name_f] in California), but it is top 10 in [name_m]Maine[/name_m] and #11[name_f][/name_f] in at least 2 other states (lost count, may be as many as 3 or 4).

[name_f][/name_f]

I don’t know if it’ll rise to #2[name_f][/name_f] but I would not at all be surprised to see it top 10 one day. [name_f][/name_f] I know of 2 Violets, one about 10 and one about 2, I believe. [name_f][/name_f] I don’t feel like that’s a ton, really, and I have [name_f]Violet[/name_f] on my own list for my purple-loving grandma. [name_f][/name_f] I would love to know a [name_f]Violet[/name_f], if I can’t have one. [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Violetta[/name_f] or [name_f]Viola[/name_f] are nice alternatives if you want something rarer, though.

I can see it getting popular. I don’t know if it’s going to be a top 3 name but I can see it being a top 10.

[name_f][/name_f]

However it is a beautiful, classic, whimsical name. And I wouldn’t pass up a beautiful name because of popularity.

I could see it rising for sure! I’ve never actually met any Violet’s of any age which is surprising to me. I don’t know if I’d see it being in the number 2 place, but I could see it rising for sure

I dont think it could be no2 anytime soon. Most normal people (who aren’t name obssesed) think it’s unusual.

It’s a lovely name! Including my own sister, I know at least six (3 around age 20, 2 preschool aged, 1 in 3rd grade). It’s definitely a popular one [name_f][/name_f]— especially now!

I’ve never met a [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. I have met one [name_f]Violetta[/name_f].

[name_f][/name_f]

I see her more in fiction/film [name_f][/name_f]- like you said Series of Unfortunate Events, Incredibles, Downton [name_f]Abbey[/name_f], Bridgerton and now Fourth Wing/The Empyrean series.

[name_f][/name_f]

I think with [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] being so popular for so long, one of theories about [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is the V sound. So to avoid Olivia…Evelyn, [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Viola[/name_f], [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f], [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] etc.

[name_f][/name_f]

I think the down side of it sounding very close to the word rape[name_f][/name_f] in [name_f]French[/name_f] and the closeness to Violence…something highlighted by the Empyrean series…will keep it lower than an [name_f]Emma[/name_f] or [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], but perhaps I’m wrong.

[name_f][/name_f]

If you love the name and always have done, I personally wouldn’t let popularity sway you.
