Isabelle vs Isabel

[name_m]Hi[/name_m],

We want to use the name [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]/[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]. Husband and I have different opinions on spelling though. [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]/[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] will be a name sake and also a first name. There are at least 3 [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]'s on my side all who have passed on, and an [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] on my husbands. There are also various Elizabeths etc. Our last name is Edwards and the middle name will be [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] if it helps. I have always prefered the [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] spelling, and my husband the [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] spelling. I also don’t mind the [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] spelling, but my husband is worried that with the o, people will say it with an o sound. Thoughts and opinions would be helpful.

The namesakes are [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], so [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] would be the better spelling since it has the [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] look but the [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] sound, if that makes sense

[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] Edwards is a beautiful name

With the [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]'s may I also suggest [name_f]Izabelle[/name_f] or [name_f]Izabel[/name_f]? Also do you know what youd like to nickname her? If youre going with the nickname [name_f]Belle[/name_f] Id go with [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] (or [name_f]Izabelle[/name_f]) but if your going with [name_u]Isa[/name_u] or [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] Id suggest the [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] spelling. My sisters name is [name_f]Izabella[/name_f] and shes always liked have the “Z” rather than the “S”, since she was 1 of 4 [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]'s in her class. Let us know what you decide!

[name_f]IMO[/name_f]:
[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]>[name_f]Isabel[/name_f][name_f]Isobel[/name_f]>>[name_f]Isabella[/name_f]

[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] has a lot of variants:
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_u]Lisa[/name_u] (my favourite), [name_f]Lisette[/name_f].

Well, I’m a huge fan of [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]. [name_f]Belle[/name_f] means beautiful in [name_m]French[/name_m], [name_f]Bel[/name_f] feels somehow incomplete to me.

Personally, I’ve always favorited [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] above all and still pronounce it the same as the other two.
Anyhow, out of your two spellings, I prefer [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f].

We will probably nickname her [name_f]Belle[/name_f]

I love your thinking, and I’m glad you like the combo. It’s our first pick for a daughter, and I’m really liking the [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] spelling more now

I prefer the simplicity of [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]. It looks less like the super popular [name_f]Isabella[/name_f].

I love the [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] spelling. Of the two you listed though I definitely prefer [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]. Like others have said, it’s cleaner and more elegant. [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] looks a bit trendy to me.

[name_f]Bel[/name_f] is the masculine form of [name_f]Belle[/name_f] when it comes before a noun that starts with a vowel.

With [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] I prefer [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]. [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] looks stronger while [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] looks more feminine.

[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is a very strong name in my eyes, both look and sound-wise, she makes [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] look more down-to-earth than frilly while not taking away the femininity and makes [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] look even stronger.

So [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] Edwards over [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] Edwards.

Thank you for all your feedback.

I think we will go with [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]

I like the look of [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. Good luck!

I love the simplicity of [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]. Beautiful name and it doesn’t need the extra letters.

Best of luck!

I know. It’s just I like the Beauty connection so I strongly prefer the -belle version.

I usually like going with the simplest spelling (unless there is a reason not to…) so… [name_f]Isabel[/name_f].

But since you are also honoring an [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] - [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] does make good sense.

[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] definitely. I have an [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] and an [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] in my family, but I definitely prefer [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f].

Like @c@29, I am a huge [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] fan. It’s been my favorite girls’ name for going on five years now, and I think she’s just perfection! I like [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] better with [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], too–[name_f]Isabel[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] almost seems harsh (or too condensed?), but [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is delightfully strong and feminine, which I think is a great combination. I agree that it sort of melds the best of [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], too–and seems to honor them more equally. Then again, I’m just really biased in favor of [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], haha!

Good luck!

To be honest, I think all versions ([name_f]Isabel[/name_f], [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]) are usable. If I was going to use it, which version would totally depend on what looks the nicest with the middle name and surname. I’ve literally had half a dozen combos where I’ve used different variations of the spelling depending on the rest of the combo.

I like [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] best as a combo with [name_f]Margaret[/name_f].
