We are trying to choose a Scottish girls name to use if we have a girl next month and [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] and [name_f]Isla[/name_f] are the only two that we seem to like. But we can’t decide which we like more/which will lend her to an easier time with spelling/pronunciation etc. I don’t want her to have a hard time spelling her name out etc.
It would be great to hear everyone’s feedback on the two names.

Also, something to consider, [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] and [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] are all common spellings, so they might get confused for one another.
Have you considered [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]?? I know you didnt ask but it’s a lovely Scottish choice!

I love [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] but my husband doesn’t like it unfortunately.
If your main concern is ease of spelling, I do think [name_f]Isla[/name_f] would be easier, because it is an increasing familiar dominant spelling where as [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] would likely often be mistakenly rendered [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]. Both are lovely choices, but [name_f]Isla[/name_f] does feel a bit fresher at the moment.
I personally adore [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] and have it on my short list. I also love the nickname Isby. People will misspell and mispronounce even the easiest of names. Many strangers spell my name, [name_u]Jean[/name_u], incorrectly…and it’s always some crazy spelling, not something like [name_u]Gene[/name_u] or [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f]. All the people that will be close to, or involved with, your family and daughter will quickly learn how to spell and pronounce her name no matter what name you choose.
I much prefer [name_f]Isobel[/name_f], it’s a timeless, melodic name that’ll never go out of fashion in my opinion (and I love this spelling for it). [name_f]Isla[/name_f] isn’t bad but it’s extremely trendy/popular at the moment and just doesn’t appeal to me as much. I don’t think either would pose massive problems in regards to spelling although both would likely require some explanation sometimes/often (eg your daughter might have to say “[name_f]Isobel[/name_f] with an ‘o’” or correct the occasional misspelling of [name_f]Isla[/name_f]). [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] gets my vote. I’ve always loved this name.
I love [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] but as others have mentioned the various spellings might mean she has to spell it. [name_f]Isla[/name_f] is also lovely and the sounds and clear and the meaning is appealing

I prefer [name_f]Isla[/name_f] to [name_f]Isobel[/name_f], [name_f]Isla[/name_f] is soft and pretty. [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] is also pretty but with [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] being so popular, even though the spelling is different, it’s overused in my opinion
[name_f]Isobel[/name_f] is easier to pronounce, for sure. I always read [name_f]Isla[/name_f] as “Is-la” and then my brain says, “Wait! I think that’s pronounced Eye-la.”

[name_f]Isla[/name_f] is a beautiful name, but it is quite trendy nowadays.
I think both names have the risk of being misspelled or mispronounced. Honestly, I think it is more probably to pronounce or spell the name [name_f]Isla[/name_f] incorrectly thanks to [name_f]Ayla[/name_f]. At least, [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] are closer and related to [name_f]Isobel[/name_f].
