Isla vs Ila?

We are thinking of [name]Isla[/name] (pronounced eye-la) for DD#3 and my mom suggested spelling it [name]Ila[/name] to avoid mispronouncing and spelling it…[name]Just[/name] wondering what you all think of that spelling??? I’d apprecaite all the help I can get…I’m still really struggling with a MN too, so help on that as well would be MUCH apprecaited. MN we are considering right now:

[name]Isla[/name] [name]Christene[/name]

[name]Isla[/name] [name]Kate[/name] (I like [name]Cate[/name] with a C but DH said he won’t go for that)

[name]Isla[/name] [name]Joy[/name]

[name]Isla[/name] [name]Bea[/name] (after hubby–his name is [name]Coby[/name] and I thought it could be kinda cute to take the “by” in his name and make it “[name]Bea[/name]” for a girl’s MN)

Other DDs names are two syllable FN and one syllable MN…this will be our last baby–am I locked in to follow the same pattern? [name]Christene[/name] (after my great grandma who I was VERY close with and just recently passed away) would be my choice if I wasn’t worrying about following the same pattern…My hubby says I am a crazy person for even thinkign about that. [name]TIA[/name]!!!

I prefer [name]Isla[/name] over [name]Ila[/name]. I think you’ll still have prn and spelling issues with [name]Ila[/name], so why not keep the original spelling?

[name]Isla[/name] [name]Christene[/name] is lovely and having the connection to your g-grandma is more than enough reason to overlook the 2-1 pattern in your other children’s names.

Personally I think the [name]Isla[/name] spelling looks much more appealing than [name]Ila[/name], and I don’t think it would cause too many issues, after all most people are familiar with the pron. of ‘Island’ so ‘[name]Isla[/name]’ isn’t too much of a stretch…

As for being ‘locked in’ to a one syllable middle name, I agree with your husband  Very few people will even know your daughters middle name, and if [name]Christene[/name] is the name you really love than that’s the name you should go with

I like [name]Ila[/name]! A unique spelling and this will get mispronounced a lot less often [name]IMO[/name]. I would go with a longer middle name. [name]Christene[/name] is great. [name]Ila[/name] [name]Christene[/name]. [name]Ila[/name] [name]Bea[/name] seems too short when written although saying it sound good.

[name]Ila[/name] just looks misspelled to me. [name]Isla[/name] looks better and more feminine in my opinion. You still may have some people say ila wrong anyway and say ill-a

[name]Isla[/name] is a pretty well known name now (your mom might not be totally in touch with a younger generation) and most people would know how to pronounce and spell this name properly.
Spelled [name]Ila[/name] it might make it harder. I woul want to pronounce this Ill-ah. Which I am sure you wouldnt want.
I have seen it spelled [name]Eyla[/name] though.

You should go with the spelling that feels right. [name]Both[/name] are beautiful. [name]Ila[/name] is the only version I’ve come aross in person, a doc. at my OBGYN spelled it that way.

For what it’s worth, I would assume [name]Ila[/name] was pronounced Ill-uh. I also used to think [name]Isla[/name] was pronounced ees-la, though. Still, I would use [name]Isla[/name] since it’s the proper spelling and is getting more and more familiar. I think most people know who [name]Isla[/name] [name]Fisher[/name] is, and I would bet that within a few years almost everyone will know how to pronounce it. I honestly think [name]Ila[/name] will cause more pronunciation problems.
