I’m looking for a unisex/gender-neutral name for myself.

[name_f]My[/name_f] first name is Miri@m, and my middle name is a variation of the name [name_f]Lucille[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] middle name honours my grandmother, with whom I share a birthday. She died when I was young, but we were very close and I still want to honour her in some way.

[name_f]My[/name_f] initials are MLK, which I want to keep. The first name has to work well in Portuguese (a language similar to Spanish) and [name_m]German[/name_m].

I’m considering the name [name_m]Miro[/name_m] [name_f]Luz[/name_f]. [name_m]Miro[/name_m] is of Polish origin and means world or peace. [name_f]Luz[/name_f] means light in Portuguese, which is the same meaning as [name_f]Lucille[/name_f].
[name_f][/name_f]I’m not sure if this name or combination is the right one, so I’d appreciate any opinions or suggestions.

I like unusual or familiar names, but anything too popular is out of the question.

[name_f][/name_f] I guess something to keep in mind is that [name_f]Luz[/name_f] is a Top 100 name for girls in Portugal – but this may not be an issue for you!

For the middle name, maybe [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] could work! It’s a masculine name but with a more unisex sound. [name_f]Or[/name_f] [name_f]Lou[/name_f], which starts with the same sound as [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] and is very unisex! You could do the [name_f]Lu[/name_f] spelling if you want it to work better in Portuguese. If you don’t mind strictly gendered names, [name_m]Luan[/name_m], Lucio/a and Luciano/a are other obvious ideas. [name_f]Lucero[/name_f] is a unisex Spanish name also meaning “light”! And finally [name_f]Lux[/name_f] could be a less popular and more unisex alternative to [name_f]Luz[/name_f].

[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Mika[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- Masculine in Finnish and feminine in Japanese, but it may also be seen as an alternate spelling of [name_m]Micah[/name_m]. It also has a nicknamey feel so I wouldn’t see it as too tied to one culture

@tallemaja Thanks so much for the suggestions! From the first names mentioned, I really like Maro. I love that it’s a variation of Mary/Miriam. The name combo Maro Lucian comes to mind, which I find lovely. Miro Lux is also nice.

[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Luz[/name_f] has a special place in my heart because it’s Portuguese.
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Lucian[/name_m] makes the name feel longer and it might be easier to pronounce in [name_m]Germany[/name_m], where I live. I also like that it has an A in it, which ties in a bit with my birth name.
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Lux[/name_f] is just VERY COOL. Now I’m undecided!

Miro Lucian/Luz/Lux are great! I guess it depends if you want the middle to lean (statistically at least) slightly more gender neutral (Lux), a little more masc (Lucian) or a little more fem (Luz)

@marysia[name_f][/name_f] Thanks for the suggestion [name_f][/name_f]! I think [name_f]Mika[/name_f] is a bit too feminine for me, even though it’s just a variation of [name_m]Micah[/name_m]. Portuguese feminine names almost always end in A. Also, my [name_m]German[/name_m] side of the family calls me [name_f]Miri[/name_f], which I despise. So I think [name_m]Miro[/name_m] will be a more intuitive change for them.

[name_f]My[/name_f] sister thinks I give off [name_m]Miro[/name_m] [name_f]Lux[/name_f] vibes, but says that [name_m]Miro[/name_m] [name_f]Luz[/name_f] has a more contrasting energy. As a non-binary person who embraces her feminine identity, [name_m]Miro[/name_m] [name_f]Luz[/name_f] sounds more like the obvious choice.

You may also consider [name_f]Mari[/name_f] or [name_f]Maris[/name_f]. Perhaps, [name_m]Ari[/name_m]? Mimo would be adorable, but courageous to use in Portuguese.
