Hello! I’m new here, but need a bit of help. My husband’s family is Italian (his name is Vincenzo, which I love as a name!) and we’re trying to figure out a potential boys name. We’re keeping the gender a surprise, but I’m certain it’s a boy! Only problem is that I dislike every name he suggests!
His family tradition is to name a son after your father — that would leave us with Umberto, which I do not like at all and which my Midwestern family would pronounce as ummm-bert-o, which would make it worse.
He has suggested Roberto as an alternative (his dad sometimes went by Rob). But my father was a Robert Jr. (Bob/Bobby) and I would never name a child after him. His other top picks are Ciro (chee-ro) and Mattia. I don’t like either of those!
I’ve read four million Italian baby boy name lists and haven’t come up with anything that I love (or even really like). The only one I’ve added to our list is Matteo, but it’s so popular in the US that I’d prefer not to use it.
Italian names are gorgeous, I’m sure you’ll find something you like! I really love [name_u]Mattia[/name_u], such an underated name. [name_m]Matteo[/name_m] is also so beautiful, and popular for a reason! I see your problems with both [name_m]Umberto[/name_m] and [name_m]Roberto[/name_m].
I actually dont think [name_u]Mattia[/name_u] is that bad and have to say it is much better when compared to [name_m]Umberto[/name_m] or [name_m]Roberto[/name_m]. Here are some more Italian names (or names that fool me into believeing they are Italian), many I’m sure you already know of but I’m giving it a shot:

i like Umberto but the mispronunciations would definitely be annoying, and of course you should love the name you pick. if you end up not finding any italian names that you like, maybe you could use a non-italian first and an italian name as a middle? like ____ Vincenzo?
How about [name_m]Orso[/name_m]? It means ‘bear’ in Italian and is used there as a given name. I imagine these have already been suggested but I also love [name_m]Elio[/name_m], [name_m]Lorenzo[/name_m], [name_m]Marcelo[/name_m], [name_m]Fabrizio[/name_m], [name_m]Rafael[/name_m], [name_m]Niccolo[/name_m], [name_m]Orlando[/name_m], [name_u]Rocco[/name_u] and [name_m]Enzo[/name_m].
Hm…what about [name_m]Elio[/name_m]? It has the same meaning as [name_m]Ciro[/name_m] (“sun”), but, as a Midwesterner myself, I think it could feel a bit more pronounceable for your Midwestern family. I think it also sounds cool and sleek like [name_m]Matteo[/name_m], but hasn’t quite reached the same level of popularity in the States. You might also consider [name_m]Beto[/name_m] as a way to honor [name_m]Umberto[/name_m].
Other options that (for me) have a similar feel to [name_m]Matteo[/name_m] are…
As an italian myself, I would suggest (Based on my taste):
[name_m]Vittorio[/name_m]
[name_m]Tristano[/name_m]
[name_m]Leonardo[/name_m]
[name_m]Damiano[/name_m]
[name_m]Orlando[/name_m]
[name_m]Dante[/name_m]
[name_m]Edoardo[/name_m]
[name_m]Tancredi[/name_m]
