Hello ladies! I’m looking for a name that compromises my husband’s neeeed for an Italian baby name and my need for a name that people can easily pronounce and has a nice nickname.
My husband’s name is [name_m]Giacomo[/name_m], and our first’s name is [name_m]Raphael[/name_m], which I love, and was Italian enough for Dad. We also have an Italian last name! My side of the family isn’t Italian though, so many Italian names seem a bit garish to me. Please help!
I have always loved the name [name_m]Rocko[/name_m]/[name_m]Rocco[/name_m]! It is such a cool name and would be adorable with big brother [name_m]Raphael[/name_m]
I think [name_m]Dante[/name_m], [name_u]Luca[/name_u], [name_m]Marco[/name_m], and [name_m]Matteo[/name_m]/[name_m]Mateo[/name_m] are all really accessible, wearable Italian names for a boy who is only half Italian. =] To me, [name_m]Matteo[/name_m] sounds the most Italian, but I still love it. It’s easy to pronounce still. As for nice nicknames, you could get [name_u]Danny[/name_u]/[name_m]Dan[/name_m], [name_m]Luke[/name_m], [name_m]Mark[/name_m]/[name_u]Mo[/name_u], and [name_m]Matt[/name_m]/[name_u]Matty[/name_u]/[name_m]Teo[/name_m]/[name_u]Mo[/name_u] out of these easily. I also like pp’s suggestion of [name_m]Rocko[/name_m]/[name_m]Rocco[/name_m]. I knew a [name_m]Rocko[/name_m] growing up who was far from Italian, so that one doesn’t even sound Italian to me even though it is.
My family is very Italian, so I have a wide variety I’m considering. My favorites are:
[name_u]Andre[/name_u] (Not sure if it’s totally Italian, but it works I think.)
[name_m]Antonio[/name_m]
[name_m]Enzo[/name_m]
[name_m]Gianni[/name_m]
[name_u]Luca[/name_u]
[name_m]Pascal[/name_m] (spelled the Italian way is [name_m]Pasquale[/name_m])
[name_u]Nico[/name_u], [name_m]Alessandro[/name_m], [name_m]Giovanni[/name_m], [name_m]Vincenzo[/name_m] are all easy to pronounce (also [name_m]Marco[/name_m] and [name_m]Antonio[/name_m] , which were kindly suggested by earlier posters)
A little harder to pronounce, but not too crazy at list in my opinion is [name_m]Scipio[/name_m] (C is silent)
I do like [name_u]Luca[/name_u], [name_m]Matteo[/name_m], [name_m]Alessio[/name_m] and [name_m]Vincenzo[/name_m] the most, all with some pretty english sounding nicknames like [name_m]Luke[/name_m], [name_m]Matt[/name_m] and [name_u]Vinnie[/name_u] if he wanted to use them. I knew a [name_m]Giovanni[/name_m] who we called Giavannino (an italian nickname for little john) and it suited him well. Are there any family names because they’re always good too?
Some others which are nice are [name_m]Francesco[/name_m], [name_m]Eduardo[/name_m], [name_m]Emilio[/name_m], Ellio, [name_m]Romeo[/name_m] (rom-eh-o not the eeee sound), [name_m]Federico[/name_m], [name_u]Simone[/name_u] and [name_m]Rocco[/name_m]
My dad’s name is [name_m]Gian[/name_m] and is pronounced like [name_m]John[/name_m] (which is what he prefers to go by). Coincidentally, his older brother is [name_m]Raphael[/name_m] (who goes by [name_m]Ralph[/name_m]).
I know it’s already been suggested but [name_m]Gianni[/name_m] or [name_m]Jionni[/name_m] could work. I’ve always heard [name_m]Gianni[/name_m] in particular pronounced like [name_m]Johnny[/name_m] rather than “gee-yah-nee”.
I know a bunch of Italian Pauls. Some are Paolos who go by [name_m]Paul[/name_m], others with [name_m]Paul[/name_m] as their birth name.
There’s also [name_m]Dominic[/name_m] or [name_u]Michael[/name_u]. I’ve met TONS of Italian Mikes and Nicks.
There’s [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] which doesn’t originate from [name_f]Italy[/name_f] but it’s a “Westernized” version of [name_m]Antonio[/name_m], and [name_u]Tony[/name_u] is super common. [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] could also work as a version of [name_m]Vincenzo[/name_m].
My absolute favorite Italian name is Lorenzo, I love it so! That’s my number one pick, and it absolutely goes with your first son’s name! Others that are nice are:
Alessandro (nn Alex or Xander)
Alonzo (nn Lon?)
Amadeo
Dante (nn Dan)
Leander
Luca/Luciano
Marcello (nn Marc)
Massimo (nn Max)
Mateo (nn Matt)
Maximo
Nataniele (nn Nate)
Nicolo (nn Nick or Nico)
Orlando
Samuele (nn Sam)
Taddeo (nn Tad)
