It's a BOY! My list of 50 names I don't hate

We found out yesterday we are expecting our second little boy! Very excited, but now comes the challenge - finding a name we love as much as [name_m]Grant[/name_m]! I just pasted the top 1,000 into a spreadsheet and deleted everything I didn’t like, leaving me with about 50 I don’t hate. Think “the” name is among them?? Gosh I hope so!

Name we both like, at least a little.
[name_u]James[/name_u] -
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] -
[name_m]Jake[/name_m] - but so popular
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m] or [name_m]Weston[/name_m] - probably top contender, and though I love [name_m]Wes[/name_m] I’m not 100% on either full name
[name_u]Ryan[/name_u]
[name_m]Gavin[/name_m] - but we are cautious of all G names as we sometimes call [name_m]Grant[/name_m], “G”
[name_u]Emmett[/name_u] - me more so than dh, he doesn’t hate it but I doubt would settle on it
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m] - again, me more than him. NN [name_u]Cal[/name_u]
[name_m]Garrett[/name_m] - we both love but sounds too close to [name_m]Grant[/name_m], right?
[name_u]Everett[/name_u] - a family name, but in an almost-over done way
[name_u]Dean[/name_u] - we both like [name_u]Dean[/name_u]…don’t love it.
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]- a family name, hate the NN [name_m]Art[/name_m] though, any cooler nicknames out there?
[name_m]Philip[/name_m]- hate nn [name_u]Phil[/name_u], though [name_u]Flip[/name_u] would be a fun nn later in life

Names we haven’t really discussed at length, could be maybes?
[name_m]Levi[/name_m]
[name_m]Cooper[/name_m]
[name_u]Hudson[/name_u]
[name_u]Jude[/name_u]
[name_u]Brett[/name_u]
[name_u]Neil[/name_u]
[name_m]Heath[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m]- [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] & [name_m]Grant[/name_m]…would that be a no-go?

Names Husband has said “no” to. Some are very hard, clear no’s - but a couple I might be able to have some sway
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m]/ [name_u]Elias[/name_u] nn [name_m]Eli[/name_m]
[name_m]Wyatt[/name_m]
[name_m]Henry[/name_m]
[name_m]Jack[/name_m]
[name_u]Evan[/name_u]
[name_m]Julian[/name_m]
[name_u]Max[/name_u]
[name_m]Leo[/name_m]
[name_m]Declan[/name_m]
[name_m]Abel[/name_m]
[name_m]Griffin[/name_m]
[name_u]Reid[/name_u]
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]
[name_m]Ruben[/name_m]
[name_u]Dexter[/name_u]
[name_u]Barrett[/name_u] nn [name_m]Bear[/name_m]
[name_m]Abram[/name_m]/ [name_m]Bram[/name_m]
[name_m]Ronan[/name_m]
[name_m]Malcolm[/name_m]- nn [name_m]Mac[/name_m]
[name_m]Cullen[/name_m]
[name_m]Callum[/name_m]
[name_m]Clark[/name_m]- family name, dh says it reminds him of Griswold
[name_u]Finn[/name_u]

Names DH likes and I’m “eh” about
[name_m]Craig[/name_m]- DH favorite…really not a fan.
[name_m]Nolan[/name_m]
[name_m]Brock[/name_m] - probably my favorite of his pics, but it seems a bit overly-masculine to me

From names you both agree on, I like [name_u]Everett[/name_u] best. It stylistically matches your first two kids names, without being too similar. My overall favorite is [name_u]Jude[/name_u] though. It’s perfect! It’s short like [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_m]Grant[/name_m], and I could totally see a [name_u]Jude[/name_u] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] for you. I think it would be perfect

I just responded to your other thread about needing to find more names. I think you have a really great list unfortunately if you are worried about popularity a lot of your names are in the top 1000. I only say this cause you mentioned [name_f]Isla[/name_f]’s name.
On your husbands “no” list I really love [name_m]Abel[/name_m] and [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] though I think they are both in the 100-400 range, also [name_m]Leon[/name_m] instead of [name_m]Leo[/name_m]. (I feel like [name_m]Leon[/name_m] works better for your sib-set.) Anyway check out the other thread for suggestions.

From the list of names you agree on I like: [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_u]Everett[/name_u] and [name_u]Dean[/name_u]. I personally wouldn’t go with [name_m]Garrett[/name_m] because it is too close to [name_m]Grant[/name_m]… From all of them I like [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] the most. If you want another nickname for it [name_m]Bear[/name_m] is one (since [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] means bear).

From the list you haven’t really talked about, I like [name_m]Levi[/name_m]. It goes well with [name_m]Grant[/name_m] and while it is not uncommon at the moment it isn’t too popular.

Names from your last list that I like are: [name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_m]Jack[/name_m], [name_m]Leo[/name_m], [name_m]Declan[/name_m], [name_m]Abel[/name_m], [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], [name_u]Dexter[/name_u], [name_m]Bram[/name_m], [name_m]Ronan[/name_m], [name_m]Clark[/name_m] and [name_u]Finn[/name_u]. But I really would try to focus on finding something you both love…

My favorites overall are: [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_m]Levi[/name_m], [name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_m]Abel[/name_m] and [name_u]Dexter[/name_u].

Good [name_m]Luck[/name_m]!!

You have lovely names on there! Considering your sibset + last name…

My favourites :
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m] + [name_m]Weston[/name_m] – both are great, prob my top ones from your list! I might love [name_m]Weston[/name_m] more… maybe!
[name_u]Everett[/name_u]
[name_m]Levi[/name_m]
[name_u]Hudson[/name_u]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m]
[name_m]Jack[/name_m]
[name_m]Abel[/name_m]
[name_m]Nolan[/name_m]
[name_u]Finn[/name_u]

Dislike :
[name_m]Phillip[/name_m]
[name_m]Cooper[/name_m]
[name_m]Heath[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m]
[name_m]Ruben[/name_m]
[name_m]Brock[/name_m]

Other names you might like :
[name_m]Bennett[/name_m]
[name_m]Jackson[/name_m]
[name_u]Cade[/name_u]
[name_m]Dax[/name_m]
[name_m]Eliam[/name_m]
Emerick / Emeric
[name_u]Flynn[/name_u]
[name_u]Finley[/name_u]
Finnick
[name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] / [name_m]Finnigan[/name_m]
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m]
[name_m]Henric[/name_m] / [name_m]Henrik[/name_m]
[name_m]Nial[/name_m] / [name_u]Niall[/name_u]
[name_m]Ethan[/name_m]

We actually aren’t that bothered by popularity right now (though something like [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] is out for being just so crazy popular!) The reason we are trying to look outside the top 1,000 is because of the names IN the top 1,000 that we like, there aren’t any that we [name_f]LOVE[/name_f]!

Yesterday I went through my list of 50 and without telling DH which ones I knew he’d already said no or yes to, I just read him the list. These are the ones he allowed to stay on the list:

[name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_u]Ryan[/name_u]
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]
[name_m]Weston[/name_m]
[name_u]Emmett[/name_u]
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m]
[name_m]Abel[/name_m]
[name_m]Garrett[/name_m]
[name_u]Everett[/name_u]
[name_u]Dean[/name_u]
[name_m]Brock[/name_m]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
[name_m]Bram[/name_m]
[name_m]Philip[/name_m]
[name_m]Clark[/name_m]
[name_u]Brett[/name_u]
[name_m]Heath[/name_m]
[name_m]Holden[/name_m] (which wasn’t on the first list, maybe it’s not in the top 1,000, that’s why I missed it?)

Then out of that he went through and picked the ones he would agree to, no questions asked.
[name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_u]Ryan[/name_u]
[name_m]Garrett[/name_m]
[name_m]Brock[/name_m]
[name_u]Brett[/name_u]
[name_m]Heath[/name_m]

(notice [name_m]Wes[/name_m] isn’t on his top list?? Sad face.)

Out of the larger list, here’s how I feel about them:
[name_u]James[/name_u] - my nephew’s name, plus ends in S. Scratch from list, except as a middle.
[name_u]Ryan[/name_u] - boring and common
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m] - prefer [name_m]Weston[/name_m], but [name_m]Wes[/name_m] is my top choice right now
[name_m]Weston[/name_m]- yes for sure
[name_u]Emmett[/name_u]- yes, but I know dh wont go for it. I’d love to use it as a middle, but he’s against it.
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m]- #2 fav under [name_m]Weston[/name_m]. Maybe I can get him to come back around to this?
[name_m]Abel[/name_m]- in theory a cool name, but when I say it outloud it sounds like “A bull.” like…a cow. Strike from list.
[name_m]Garrett[/name_m]- gotta strike from list, as much as I love it, too similar to [name_m]Grant[/name_m]
[name_u]Everett[/name_u]- meh…handsome but kind of long with our long last name. If DH begged for it (which he isn’t) I would probably go for it but it’s not something I’m pushing for
[name_u]Dean[/name_u]- love in theory, in real life, it’s too … soap opera?
[name_m]Brock[/name_m]- meh. Prefer [name_u]Brett[/name_u].
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]- I like someone pointing out that it means [name_m]Bear[/name_m], though I don’t know if dh would let me call him that…will discuss. Certainly a neat name.
[name_m]Bram[/name_m]- I really like this but I doubt he’ll go for it.
[name_m]Philip[/name_m]- meh
[name_m]Clark[/name_m]- Not my top choice, and I know dh wont consent as a first anyway.
[name_u]Brett[/name_u]- like the most out of hubs favorites, could be ok with it but don’t adore it for sure.
[name_m]Heath[/name_m]- I think this name is cool and I think of [name_m]Heath[/name_m] Ledger, who is super cool…but in reality I doubt we’d actually use it.
[name_m]Holden[/name_m]- still need to read Catcher in the [name_m]Rye[/name_m] to decide if it’s a good name sake. Again, in theory a very cool name, but what do you call him for a pet name, Hold?

sigh already feeling over this whole thing. I’m feeling stressed like we are going to spend the next 24 weeks going over the same group of “meh” names until we are finally forced to just pick one.

What about [name_u]Everett[/name_u] but you call him [name_u]Brett[/name_u]? Or [name_m]Rhett[/name_m]? I think it would work!

I really love [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]. Other NN ideas are [name_m]Artie[/name_m] and [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] (again, since it means bear). I think you could even get away with [name_m]Archie[/name_m].

I also adore [name_u]Dean[/name_u]…I think it fits with [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_m]Grant[/name_m] SO well! I know it’s just meh for you right now, but it might be worth further consideration. I know a 4-yr-old named [name_u]Dean[/name_u] and it’s so adorable on him! I think it hits the sweet spot of familiar but rarely heard. Masculine, simple, friendly, warm.

I adore the idea of [name_f]Isla[/name_f], [name_m]Grant[/name_m], and [name_m]Heath[/name_m]. [name_m]Heath[/name_m] is perfect with [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_m]Grant[/name_m]. Maybe you and your husband need to take a break from looking at names. Take a month off and then take a look at your list again. I had to do that with girls’ names and it helped a lot. [name_m]Just[/name_m] a thought.

With [name_m]Grant[/name_m] and your long surname, I think these names would be fine choices. My faves are bolded below. I like some of the other names like [name_u]Everett[/name_u], [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] and [name_u]Brett[/name_u] but not with [name_m]Grant[/name_m].

[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m]
[name_m]Abel[/name_m]
[name_u]Dean[/name_u] - fave
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
[name_m]Philip[/name_m]
[name_m]Clark[/name_m] - third choice
[name_m]Holden[/name_m]
[name_m]Heath[/name_m] - 2nd choice

On paper I think [name_u]Dean[/name_u] is a perfect match with [name_m]Grant[/name_m], both like you said masculine, simple, recognizable but not overly popular, easy to spell, easy to pronounce…etc. But, alass.

My favorites for your sibset:

[name_m]Wesley[/name_m], [name_u]Emmett[/name_u], [name_m]Calvin[/name_m], [name_u]Dean[/name_u], and…loving the addition of [name_u]Jude[/name_u] to the list! [name_f]Isla[/name_f], [name_m]Grant[/name_m] & [name_u]Jude[/name_u] would be amazing!

[name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] are runners up, and off the husband no list my faves for you are: [name_u]Finn[/name_u], [name_u]Evan[/name_u], [name_u]Reid[/name_u], and [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m].

Congrats btw!

Well I have a [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] and a [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] so we must have similar taste. I almost named [name_m]Wes[/name_m] “[name_m]Calvin[/name_m]” but it clashed with our last name. [name_u]Cal[/name_u] is a cool nn and it hits the sweet spot of being uncommon but still an easy to spell/pronounce/familiar name.

I will say that I’ve met a few younger [name_m]Wesley[/name_m]'s since naming my son. It definitely seems to be getting more popular than it was when we picked it. But it’s a good solid name with a great nn. I never considered [name_m]Weston[/name_m] but that is a great alternative. (Any -on names would rhyme with our last name.)

I also love [name_u]Dean[/name_u]. I have an older friend/mentor who is just a solid guy and he is the only [name_u]Dean[/name_u] I know in real life. There is the main character [name_u]Dean[/name_u] on Supernatural and [name_u]Dean[/name_u] [name_m]Cain[/name_m]. Can’t think of any others. And [name_u]Dean[/name_u] [name_m]Martin[/name_m] of course. Doesn’t feel soap-opera to me.

[name_u]Jude[/name_u] and [name_u]Reid[/name_u] are nice too.

I am currently trying to figure out a name for baby #4. It gets harder each time! With the last two kids I had a top 2 or 3 names chosen that we agreed on. I didn’t actually make the decision until after they were born. I met them and then I knew what name I liked best. Besides, DH was more willing to let me make the final call after I just went through labor. ha!

When I read my list to DH he paused a long time on [name_u]Dexter[/name_u], smiled, then shook his head and said he’d never be able to follow through on it. Such a cool name, and we both [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] the show [name_u]Dexter[/name_u], but I guess having a serial killer as a namesake just wasn’t going to cut it for him. I’d use it in a heartbeat though!

Re: [name_u]Jude[/name_u] - I think it’s an interesting name but I can’t help feeling like it sounds like Jew if you say it fast. For that reason I doubt it will go far on our list.

Names I could actually see myself using…
[name_u]Ryan[/name_u]-nice name. I like it!
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]-Have a soft spot for this. Not into [name_m]Weston[/name_m] at all though.
[name_u]Everett[/name_u]-Quite lovely (Have you ever considered [name_m]Evander[/name_m]? Has a similar vibe)
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]-I personally like [name_m]Artie[/name_m]. I have only met two Arthurs in my life-both gorgeous popular kids. ”
out there?
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m]-handsome name-with cool factor
[name_u]Evan[/name_u] (Again [name_m]Evander[/name_m] gets my vote).
[name_u]Reid[/name_u]-love this and love [name_u]Reeve[/name_u] have your considered that?
[name_m]Ruben[/name_m]-soft and lovely. ”
[name_u]Dexter[/name_u]-pity the serial killer has ruined it for you.

PS: Yes [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_m]Grant[/name_m] are too much. Pity as [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] is a great name.

Maybe you could use [name_m]Dex[/name_m] as a nickname for [name_m]Declan[/name_m] (Dec–>Decs–>[name_m]Dex[/name_m]). That might make him like [name_m]Declan[/name_m] more, if it’s still on the list.

nope, he vetoed that one too. Hard.

I did try [name_u]Reeve[/name_u], on paper it looks really cool and handsome but when I went to say it outloud to tell my hubs it just sounded made up and I knew right away he’d say no.

Of your list I like best:

[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] (my first and maiden last name began with the same letter letter and it was never a problem. I think [name_u]Sam[/name_u] Shutterowork is totally handsome!
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m]
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]
[name_u]Everett[/name_u]
[name_u]Dean[/name_u]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] (this is on our list, with the nickname [name_u]Ari[/name_u])

We are also expecting a baby in [name_f]July[/name_f]! We don’t know the sex of the little bugger yet! I also have [name_m]Westin[/name_m], [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], [name_m]Cullen[/name_m] & [name_m]Callum[/name_m] on the top of my list! So I love those choices! My husband is not set on any of them either! Good luck! 2 other names I have that I am in love with, Kemper & Kogan!
