It's a boy! Robinson? Or something else?

We just found out we are expecting a boy this summer! (Second child, first is a girl) and boy names are so much harder for us than girls. We like names that aren’t made up or odd spellings, don’t want them to be too popular, and nicknames are important to me, so it needs to have a good one.

[name_f]Sister[/name_f]'s name is [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] nn [name_f]Evie[/name_f]. Almost never called by anything but [name_f]Evie[/name_f].
(Pronounced the American way)

Here are some names we both like but most likely won’t use for various reasons:

[name_m]Malcolm[/name_m]-not unique enough
[name_m]Julius[/name_m]-love, but too similar to a family member’s name. This is one of two options for middle name
[name_u]Brett[/name_u]- this is our other middle name choice
[name_u]Everett[/name_u]- too popular
[name_m]Grayson[/name_m]- too popular
[name_m]Harrison[/name_m]- too popular
[name_m]Jarvis[/name_m]- too weird, although awesome
Moriarty- SO cool, but too weird and also we really couldn’t pull that off
[name_m]Milo[/name_m]- too popular, also too short to go with his sister’s name.
[name_m]Gibson[/name_m]- really like actually. Nn Gibbs. My hesitation is that the associations with it are the guitars and [name_u]Mel[/name_u] [name_m]Gibson[/name_m]. Does that matter? Also, same letter as sister. Not a deal breaker, just something to think about…
[name_m]Leander[/name_m]- nn [name_m]Anders[/name_m], [name_u]Andy[/name_u], or [name_u]Lee[/name_u]. I love it but my husband really doesn’t. I think his objection is that he has never heard it before so it doesn’t sound like a name.

We noticed we apparently like some of the popular “surname names”, so that led me to [name_m]Robinson[/name_m]. We both are really liking it; we would call him [name_u]Robin[/name_u]. My husband prefers that we name him [name_m]Robinson[/name_m] and only use [name_u]Robin[/name_u] as a nn because [name_u]Robin[/name_u] is unisex while [name_m]Robinson[/name_m] is clearly a boy’s name. I love all the associations with it; Swiss Family [name_m]Robinson[/name_m], [name_m]Robinson[/name_m] [name_m]Crusoe[/name_m], [name_u]Robin[/name_u] Hood, [name_u]Robin[/name_u] the bird, Batman and [name_u]Robin[/name_u], [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] [name_u]Robin[/name_u], [name_u]Robin[/name_u] [name_m]Williams[/name_m]…there are tons of them and I love them all. Middle would probably be [name_u]Brett[/name_u] just cause we have a 3 syllable last name and [name_m]Robinson[/name_m] [name_m]Julius[/name_m] doesn’t flow as well.

So [name_m]Robinson[/name_m] [name_u]Brett[/name_u] is our current favorite, but I am curious what people’s reactions are to it. We have pretty much decided against the other names I mentioned, but are there maybe any other suggestions based our apparent tastes? (The popularity thing is unfortunately a deal breaker for me as I grew up with a very popular name with no nn and I disliked that.)

Give me your thoughts!

Honestly I’m not a huge fan. I love [name_u]Robin[/name_u] as a name but [name_m]Robinson[/name_m] just feels too surname-y to me (I’m not at all against surnames as firsts in general). It also just seems to me a bit dated and sort of lack luster.

I really like [name_m]Gibson[/name_m] from your list. I don’t think it starting with a G is an issue as the “G” sounds different between the two names. [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]'s G is more of a J sound, correct? I don’t believe the connections to [name_m]Gibson[/name_m] are bad either and honestly I don’t see [name_m]Gibson[/name_m] as a name and immediately think “guitars and [name_u]Mel[/name_u]”.

If you feel strongly about [name_m]Robinson[/name_m] I’d keep it on the list but keep searching. See what’s out there and if you come back to that one when it’s baby time you’ll know you made a thought out well informed decision.

I don’t mind [name_m]Robinson[/name_m], although vastly prefer [name_u]Robin[/name_u] given it’s more closely associated with a fn instead of a last name. As surname first names go, [name_m]Robinson[/name_m] is a good one. I like that it has good nicknames - [name_m]Rob[/name_m] and [name_u]Robby[/name_u] being other options.

I don’t mind [name_m]Robinson[/name_m], it’s just like all of the other -son surname names being used as first names, just not so popular.
There’s no reason not to use it if you like similar names like [name_m]Grayson[/name_m], [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] and [name_m]Gibson[/name_m].

[name_m]Evander[/name_m] (Ev, [name_u]Evan[/name_u], [name_m]Anders[/name_m], [name_u]Andy[/name_u]) not sure how much [name_m]Evander[/name_m] goes with [name_u]Brett[/name_u] though.
I also like the name Lassell and probably works better with [name_u]Brett[/name_u] … not sure about knicknames (Las and Sel seem lacking)

I am the opposite so far. I like [name_m]Robinson[/name_m] but I am not a fan of [name_u]Robin[/name_u] at all. Too girly [name_f]IMO[/name_f].

[name_m]Gibson[/name_m] is one of my favorite names! I love everything about it! I wouldn’t worry about the 2 G’s especially since you call her [name_f]Evie[/name_f]. [name_u]Love[/name_u] love love this option!

[name_m]Leander[/name_m] is also a great name - my step son and wife will be using this for their next baby. [name_m]Anders[/name_m] is an awesome NN or stand alone. [name_m]Anders[/name_m] with NN [name_u]Andy[/name_u] could be an option.

I like [name_m]Robinson[/name_m] and love [name_u]Robin[/name_u] on a boy!

You might also like [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] nn [name_u]Sully[/name_u] or [name_u]Van[/name_u]
Or maybe [name_m]Nicodemus[/name_m] nn [name_u]Nico[/name_u]
or [name_m]Chadwick[/name_m] nn [name_m]Chaz[/name_m]

I like [name_m]Robinson[/name_m]! It’s definitely “surname-y,” but super familiar and like you said, has great associations. I am totally down for bringing [name_u]Robin[/name_u] back to the girls! I’ve known one girl and one boy [name_u]Robin[/name_u].
