Ivo

I love this name, but in English probably only if pronounced with a long I (EYE-vo); otherwise it sounds a bit too much like “evil” [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. I think that the name is sometimes used in the UK with that pronunciation. Anyone know an [name_m]Ivo[/name_m]? [name_m]How[/name_m] does the [name_m]Ivo[/name_m] you know pronounce the name, and what country is he from? I’m assuming all the Euro Ivos pronounce it EE-vo so most interested in hearing about the anglophone ones.

I’ve only met a few Ivos and none of them are anglophones. They all pronounce it ee-vo. But most people, in the US at least, seem to pronounce [name_m]Ivan[/name_m] as eye-van, not ee-van, so my guess is they would also pronounce [name_m]Ivo[/name_m] as eye-vo.

my grandfather was named [name_m]Ivo[/name_m] ( eye-vo)
I also know one latino man named [name_m]Ivo[/name_m] ( ee-vo).

i like them both and had considered the EYE-vo version for my own son.

My son is named [name_m]Ivo[/name_m] after my father.

My husband and I are American, but my father was from northwestern Europe and we pronounce our son’s name like he did, EE-vo. However, I have found that most people who read the name for the first time do say EYE-vo initially. We also have taken to calling our son [name_m]Ives[/name_m], pronounced the English way (EYE’vs). I don’t mind EYE-vo when people call my son that and sometimes don’t correct, as I rather like when names are pronounced differently in different cultures (gives you a sense of where you are?). However, it does sound a bit off to me personally, as I am so accustom to hearing EE-vo.

I cannot stand the pronounciation with EYE, and only pronounce it with EE. I’m not an anglophone, though, so that might be it. This is also an extremely dated name where I live so I can’t imagine it on anyone younger than 60, but if that is not the case where you live then I think you should go for it if you really love it.

I’m sorry if I sounded harsh or rude, but this was merely my personal opinion. I hope you do find a name you love! Good luck!

I love [name_m]Ivo[/name_m], with both pronunciations. I would pronounce it eye-vo if the person was an anglophone, or ee-vo otherwise.

Thanks, all. Anyone else with thoughts?

[name_m]Just[/name_m] to be clear, I think EE-vo is a really attractive name too. I just have a personal preference for EYE-vo in English.
