Meaning & [name_m]History[/name_m]
From the Old Norse name ”varr, which was derived from the elements yr “yew, bow” and arr “warrior”. During the Middle Ages it was brought to [name_m]Britain[/name_m] by Scandinavian settlers and invaders, and it was adopted in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f], [name_f]Scotland[/name_f] and [name_m]Wales[/name_m].
We would use the IE-vawr pronunciation.
Possible middles…
[name_m]Ivor[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_m]Ivor[/name_m] [name_m]Benedict[/name_m]
Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I love [name_m]Ivor[/name_m]! I have ”var on my own list (we say EE-var, but I like the English pronunciation as well).
It reminds me of [name_m]Ivor[/name_m] the Engine, which is a dated reference, I know - it’s from before my time, let alone the time of modern kids! I think it was a lovely programme, though, and probably something a child of today would still enjoy, especially sharing a name with the engine! For this reason, it makes me think ‘Welsh’, although I know really it’s not a Welsh name at all. I think it feels like a very friendly, down-to-earth sort of name.
[name_m]Ivor[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_m]Ivor[/name_m] [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] are both so gorgeous, I really couldn’t pick between them. If I had to though, I think I would go for [name_m]Ivor[/name_m] [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] simply because it’s a little more unusual.
It feels quite harsh to me, so that immediately makes me leery. The meaning goes along with that (though I do like it). [name_m]Ivor[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_m]Ivor[/name_m] [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] both go well, but I’m inclined to move more toward the latter because I think [name_u]James[/name_u] is a slightly ‘softer’ name which something like [name_m]Ivor[/name_m] could need.
I think [name_m]Ivor[/name_m] is great! It has family associations for me so I have considered adding it to my list. It feels very Welsh to me, even though obviously it’s origins aren’t actually Welsh. It’s a very handsome name
I find [name_u]James[/name_u] a bit of a boring middle so I prefer [name_m]Ivor[/name_m] [name_m]Benedict[/name_m]
[name_m]Ivor[/name_m] [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] is fantastic! [name_m]Ivor[/name_m] is so handsome (and [name_m]Ivo[/name_m] would be adorable for a nickname if you were going to use one!)
I love [name_m]Ivor[/name_m]! There is a two year old at my sons daycare named [name_m]Ivor[/name_m] and as soon as I heard it I fell in love with it. My husband and I both thought of Bon [name_m]Ivor[/name_m] the singer when we heard it. I don’t find it harsh at all. I think it’s a clearly masculine name with soft sounds
I think of [name_m]Ivor[/name_m] Hugglemonster. He’s the baby on the Disney [name_m]Jr[/name_m]. TV show [name_m]Henry[/name_m] Hugglemonster. I really like the name! When I first heard it when my daughter was watching the show I thought it was refreshing to hear. It’s adorable when my almost two year old says it. Out of your two choices I like [name_m]Ivor[/name_m] [name_m]Benedict[/name_m].
[name_m]Ivor[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] is gorgeous! When encountering [name_m]Ivor[/name_m], I always think of it as being a slightly posh name and I think that [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] would emphasise that. [name_u]James[/name_u], however, is smashing and [name_m]Ivor[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] has a lovely flow. The first thing that comes to my mind when thinking of [name_m]Ivor[/name_m] is [name_m]Ivor[/name_m] Novello.
I’m not big on [name_m]Ivor[/name_m], but I don’t dislike it either. It has a quirkiness to it that I do like, but is also a pretty strong and well grounded name. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though I dislike [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] myself, I must say I like [name_m]Ivor[/name_m] [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] as a combo - it has a great sound.
After having read your intro, I think it’s a lovely name. Before having read your intro, I wouldn’t have liked it so much. I would instinctively pronounce it like [name_m]Igor[/name_m] (ee-gor) with a V, which isn’t the best association.
