Izzy but not Isabel/la

I have a list of ten(!) girl names that start with Is- or Iz- that could go by [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] for short.

But what would you, without being influenced by my obviously deranged person list, recommend for [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] that is suitable for a girl and not a variant of [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]?

We both like [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] (or [name_f]Izzie[/name_f] I guess) but we’re not nicknames-as-full-names people. I know some people really truly hate [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]/[name_f]Izzie[/name_f] as a nickname but I find it spritely and cute.

Oh wise Berries, what do you think of? Neither popularity nor rareness matters in this case.

[name_f]My[/name_f] favourites are [name_f]Isadora[/name_f], [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] & [name_f]Isabeau[/name_f].

[name_f]Isadora[/name_f], definitely!

Sorry - forgot to explain myself. [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] reminds me of the famous dancer, [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] [name_m]Duncan[/name_m]. Positive associations!

[name_f]Isadora[/name_f] is beautiful.

For a whole other approach I love Izarra nn [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]

I love [name_f]Isidora[/name_f] (though I prefer [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] for a boy. This spelling as it’s the original that honors [name_f]Isis[/name_f]) and [name_f]Isolde[/name_f]. Those are the obvious and begins with IS names. There’s a bunch that don’t start or end with IS or IZ that I like too but it’s a long list and I’m busy at the moment. I’ll come back later.

I also like:

[name_f]Isaline[/name_f]
Ismena
Istas
[name_u]Artemis[/name_u]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
Koronis
[name_f]Izara[/name_f]

Mind these are just the ones I like. There are much more in the middle that I don’t like. I’ll come back when I’m not so busy.

Awesome! I’m seeing love for some names I had (which is reassuring) and some new names, which is cool!

I’ll put up my names on the next page or so. I just didn’t want to affect the early results. Thanks for posting, everyone.

I just want to add [name_f]Isaura[/name_f]… and [name_f]Ismene[/name_f] and [name_f]Ismay[/name_f].

[name_f]Isolde[/name_f]/[name_f]Yseult[/name_f]/and variants was my first idea. (Well, technically, [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] was, but while [name_u]Isa[/name_u] makes perfect sense for [name_f]Louisa[/name_f], does [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]? The sound isn’t in there at all…)

I still like [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] best, but I think [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] would be pretty great, too. There’s Isanne/[name_f]Isannah[/name_f], but I’m not sure if that’s a variation of [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]?

[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] is my favourite, but I also found:

[name_f]Isolda[/name_f]
[name_f]Isaure[/name_f]
[name_f]Isaura[/name_f]
Isaca
Ishilda
Ishtar
[name_f]Isis[/name_f]
Iskra
[name_f]Ismene[/name_f]
[name_m]Isra[/name_m]

Yay! Thanks everyone!

[name_f]My[/name_f] list looked like this, in no particular order:

  1. [name_f]Isidora[/name_f] - I like the two-i spelling, partly because of how it looks closer to [name_f]Isis[/name_f] and partly due to honestly just a point of distinction from the Isabellas. But will it always be spelled [name_f]Isadora[/name_f]?
  2. Isidra - A variant of [name_f]Isidora[/name_f] that is a bit shorter but perhaps no less clunky. It does get rid of [name_f]Dora[/name_f], which I’m not keen on.
  3. [name_f]Izora[/name_f] - [name_m]Plenty[/name_m] of uncertainty on where this 19th C. name came from, whether made up, from [name_f]Isaura[/name_f], [name_f]Isidora[/name_f], or [name_f]Azura[/name_f]…?
  4. [name_f]Isaura[/name_f] - [name_m]Will[/name_m] it get wrecked? I like it… Sound of 4
  5. [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] - For this one I love the [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation.Sound of 5
  6. Izolda - Polish form of [name_f]Isolde[/name_f], ee-zol-da
  7. [name_f]Isaline[/name_f] - I think this is a form of [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] though. :frowning:
  8. [name_f]Iselin[/name_f] - Might be a form of [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] or a form of [name_f]Aisling[/name_f], I’ve found conflicting info. Sound of 8.
  9. Izarra - Means ‘star,’ I think it’s beautiful.Sound of 9
  10. Izette - I’ve seen this listed as a [name_m]French[/name_m] name, some sources say a form of [name_f]Isolde[/name_f]? I hope it’s not to [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] what [name_f]Lisette[/name_f] is to [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]. I’m not sure what I think of it.

So that’s my list. And yes, much of it is various forms of [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] or [name_f]Isidora[/name_f], so imagine how happy I am that those two got plenty of love!

I don’t think [name_f]Isidora[/name_f] would constantly be spelled [name_f]Isadora[/name_f]. For one, no matter how common the name – [name_f]Anne[/name_f] could still be [name_f]Ann[/name_f], [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] could be [name_f]Hanna[/name_f], [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] could be [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f] etc – it will always be asked to be spelled. [name_f]My[/name_f] name’s [name_u]Angel[/name_u] and people ask me to spell it all the time followed by a request to spell my last name - [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. It will happen no matter the spelling you use so use the one you love. Point 2 – I know a boy whose middle name is [name_m]Isidore[/name_m]. He uses it frequently in his life, and goes by [name_u]Izzy[/name_u], and people don’t seem to have problems spelling his name. [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] and [name_m]Isadore[/name_m] are pronounced differently to me anyway. is-ih-door versus is-a-door.

And [name_f]Isaline[/name_f] is a variation of [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] but I don’t think anyone really would know that and it’s very pretty.

[name_m]Isidore[/name_m]'s a name that pops up in my family tree a few times, especially if you expand out to far-flung cousins. It was very popular for Jewish boys at one point. I actually really like it. I don’t understand why [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]'s having a revival but [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] isn’t.

[name_f]My[/name_f] husband isn’t hugely fond of it though.

[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] is my favorite. I also adore [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] but very much dislike over used [name_f]Isabel[/name_f].

I like [name_f]Isannah[/name_f] a lot. The character in [name_m]Johnny[/name_m] Tremain isn’t so great, but it’s a cool name!

I wish the character was a bit nicer since that’s all most people think of about it. On the other hand I think she was even called [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] in the book so there’s that.

I like the sound but wonder if it’s too similar to my own -anna ending name? On the other hand I mostly go by [name_u]Josie[/name_u] so I’m not sure it matters.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you know how it’s supposed to be said? The internet is giving me all kinds of answers so I guess I can pick what I like best.

bumping Re: [name_f]Isannah[/name_f], what I think at the moment:

I’d like if it were said either
ih-zanna or iz-anna (sounding like the front of [name_f]Isidora[/name_f] + the end of [name_f]Susannah[/name_f]) - would be very easy to get to [name_u]Izzy[/name_u], familiar girly name-sounds.
or
EYE-zanna (soundwise similar to [name_m]Isaac[/name_m]'s first syllable + anna) - [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] is a classic nickname for [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] so I’m comfortable with it on that even if it switches from “eyes” to “iz” and a long I would be a nice tie-in for family reasons.

And those are only a couple of versions I’ve found suggested!

I’d like if it didn’t sound completely made up or destroyed when I say it, I feel rather insecure about that. I don’t want her to HAVE to go by [name_u]Izzy[/name_u], just have it as option.

Isoline
Isilda
Isilde
[name_f]Isotta[/name_f]
Ismaela
Izumi

Is- names are my favorite–I have half a dozen on my list, plus [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]/[name_f]Isobel[/name_f].

on my list:
[name_u]Isa[/name_u]
[name_f]Isabeau[/name_f]
[name_f]Isadora[/name_f]
[name_f]Isaline[/name_f]
[name_f]Isannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Ismay[/name_f]/Ismae
Ismeria

I have similar concerns about [name_f]Isannah[/name_f], but it’s just too pretty to let go.
