My husband and I long ago picked out a name for our future baby boy. We love the Polish name [name_m]Jacek[/name_m] (and it’s original pronunciation), but will likely “Americanize” it to be pronounced ‘[name_u]Jay[/name_u]-seck’.
Fast forward to now, and it seems like there are a million little boys named [name_u]Jace[/name_u]/[name_m]Jayce[/name_m]/[name_m]Jase[/name_m]. I don’t want our little man to be “one of the [name_u]Jace[/name_u]'s”. Is the name unique enough to stand out from the crowd, or will people constantly be assuming that he’s “one of them”?
I wasn’t familiar with the name before, but I didn’t immediately think it was a new [name_u]Jace[/name_u] variant, instead it reminded me of names like [name_m]Joachim[/name_m]
So I’d say, based on my reaction, it gives more of a quirky European vibe than a trendy made up one
My husband and I learned the Polish language, and so I personally don’t find it at all appealing to Americanize [name_m]Jacek[/name_m]. If you guys like the original pronunciation (yah-tsek), why is there a need to Americanize it? Plus, if you keep the original pronunciation, the whole ‘jace’ thing won’t be an issue.
Im a strong believer in if you personally like a name to use it. I have never heard of any [name_m]Jacek[/name_m]'s before, but can see how it would get shortened to the more common “[name_m]Jase[/name_m]”. If you’re trying to avoid the [name_m]Jase[/name_m] trend have you considered the nickname “[name_m]Ace[/name_m]” for [name_m]Jacek[/name_m]?
You love the Polish pronunciation but plan to “Americanize” it anyway? That doesn’t make sense to me. Use the Polish pronunciation and your problem will be solved.
I realize that this thread is a few days old, but I feel obligated to respond. As naming my first child was a HUGE stressor, I’ve been actively trying to pick a potential boy and girl name for my next child pre-pregnancy. [name_m]Jacek[/name_m] is my current boy choice and, like you, I love the polish influence, yet plan to Americanize the pronounciation.
I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the fact that [name_m]Jacek[/name_m] takes a unique name (I’ve never met a [name_m]Jacek[/name_m] - have you?), yet gives the acceptable, familiar nickname choice of [name_u]Jace[/name_u] (or [name_m]Ace[/name_m]! I <3 that suggestion!). As your child grows, I feel that he will be given the choice if he wants to be one-of-a-kind (Jacek) or blend into the crowd (Jace/Ace).
