Jack vs. James

What are your thoughts and opinions on these two names? If you had to choose between the two for your child, which would you choose and why? Which one do you prefer in a sibset with older sisters named [name]Sophie[/name] and [name]Violet[/name]?

Those are my husband’s two top choices for our third baby and I am debating which one to go with if he won’t give in to any of my top names. He has final say on this baby’s name since I had final say with our last daughter’s name.

I much prefer [name]James[/name]! Such a solid, classic name, with cute nn potential: [name]Jaime[/name], [name]Jim[/name], [name]Jimmy[/name]. I also think it makes a nice sibset with [name]Sophie[/name] and [name]Violet[/name].

Goodness, I love both! I think it depends on the feel you are going for. Though I consider both names I classic, [name]James[/name] feels more classicly classic(hope that makes sense). [name]Jack[/name] has a more fun loving carefree feel to it. I think I prefer [name]James[/name] with your daughters’ names.

[name]James[/name], without question. [name]Jack[/name], the word, has negative connotations, and I also feel like it sounds harsher than [name]James[/name]. [name]James[/name] is lovely and classic.

They are both strong, short, masculine and very common. But my favourite by far is [name]James[/name], I think it has more history and has a nicer sound than [name]Jack[/name], I also think [name]James[/name] would go lovely with sisters [name]Sophie[/name] and [name]Violet[/name]. [name]James[/name] can always be spruced up with a long interesting middle name

I love both names! But with [name]Sophie[/name] and [name]Violet[/name], I choose the classic [name]James[/name].
Or how about [name]James Patrick[/name], nn [name]Jack[/name]?

Another one here for [name]James[/name]! Classy and classic. I think [name]Jack[/name] is cute but its trendy now. I picture [name]Jack[/name] on little ones and old men, i don’t know any in between. My brother is a [name]James[/name], always went by [name]Jamie[/name] growing up, i didn’t even realize his name was [name]James[/name] and took me a while to adapt to it when he started going by [name]James[/name] in the professional world. Very versatile name in terms of using full or nn.
Now I adore this name and will be using it on my own child one day hopefully!

[name]James[/name] has always been one of my favorite boys names! I think it goes very well with [name]Sophie[/name] and [name]Violet[/name].

I much prefer [name]Jack[/name] personally–I love its laid-back feel and how [name]Jack[/name] could really be anybody. That being said, I like [name]James[/name] much more with [name]Sophie[/name] and [name]Violet[/name]. It has a more classy, posh sort of feel to it (in a good way!) that goes really well with [name]Sophie[/name] and [name]Violet[/name]. It’s a bit more button-up.

Although, [name]Jack[/name] has been used with some regularity as a nn for [name]James[/name]–maybe you could opt for [name]James[/name] nn [name]Jack[/name]? That way he’d keep both his favorites, but I don’t know if that interests either of you…

I like [name]Jack[/name] but it’s a nickname. It feels fun and boyish, but he might want something a little more mature and professional when he grows up. I really love [name]James[/name], it’s so handsome and has several possible nicknames.

[name]James[/name]
[name]Jack[/name] is just nn and he’ll spend his life saying “No, not [name]John[/name]. [name]Just[/name] [name]Jack[/name].”

I’m not a fan of [name]Jack[/name]. [name]IMO[/name] it’s just slang for [name]John[/name]. However, I love [name]James[/name]! Very classic, strong and very classy.

This is exactly what I was thinking …

[name]James[/name] would be my choice.

[name]Jack[/name] is my choice. I don’t think it’s just a nn. I think it’s a good little boys name that can turn into a strong mans name. And I think it goes with your sibset much better then [name]James[/name].

I love [name]James[/name] and it is a classic name, strong and proud. [name]Jack[/name] on the other hand is a nn. Sorry to say, but it also has too many teasing opportunities that come along with it. Hit the Road…be nimble…& the beanstalk…sprat…sat in the corner…went up the hill…Rabbit… as well as som “others” that aren’t as nice…and on and on…

Another vote for [name]James[/name]. It’s my toddler’s name. We call him by his full name or [name]Jay[/name].

Wow thanks for all the feedback! I am honestly surprised at all the votes for [name]James[/name]. I thought it would be more even than that
I am still kind of torn between which one I like better although this thread has helped me see [name]James[/name] in a more positive light.
I think it’s interesting that if you look at the name charts for the US, there are more babies named [name]James[/name] than [name]Jack[/name]. But I feel like I hear the name [name]Jack[/name] so much more often and meet little ones named [name]Jack[/name] way more frequently than [name]James[/name]. [name]Jack[/name] feels more trendy and of the moment than [name]James[/name] but statistically more babies are given the name [name]James[/name]. Doesn’t make much sense. Maybe because there is also the name [name]Jackson[/name] to combine with all the Jacks?
A week ago I was barely even considering [name]James[/name] but then for some reason I started thinking more about it as a serious contender. I know my husband would be happy to name him [name]James[/name]. I do not like the nickname possibilities of [name]Jim[/name], [name]Jimmy[/name] or [name]Jamie[/name] at all which is one negative of the name for me. But as long as my husband agreed not to call him any of those nicknames, I would probably be ok with it.
Thank you for all the help, I really appreciate it!

[name]Sophie[/name], [name]Violet[/name], and [name]James[/name] make a lot of sense; they’re all very classic names that compliment each other well.

But I’ve always preferred [name]Jack[/name] over [name]James[/name]. [name]Sophie[/name], [name]Violet[/name], and [name]Jack[/name] don’t sound too bad together either.

And every [name]James[/name] I know (except for my much older uncle) just go by [name]James[/name]. You could call him [name]Jay[/name], I suppose. [name]Do[/name] you think [name]Jack[/name] could be a nickname for [name]James[/name]? Eh, maybe not. I see no problem with just [name]James[/name].

The majority of Jacks you hear have [name]John[/name] or [name]Jackson[/name] on their birth certificates

The great thing about such an old name like [name]James[/name] is that there are a ton of variants. My personal favorite is [name]Shea[/name] ([name]James[/name]= [name]Seamus[/name]). You can still use [name]Jack[/name] since [name]James[/name] and [name]Jacob[/name] have the same origin. Other variations:
[name]Jake[/name]
[name]Jac[/name]/ [name]Jack[/name]
[name]Jago[/name]
[name]Diego[/name]
[name]Tiago[/name]/ [name]Thiago[/name]
[name]Koby[/name]/ [name]Coby[/name]
