Jadzia?

I’m wondering what other people’s thoughts on/reactions to the name Jadzia would be? It’s pronounced jahd [name]ZEE[/name] ah and is Germanic (also a form of [name]Jadwiga[/name] and [name]Hedwig[/name]) which means battle or female warrior. I keep going back to this name even though it isn’t quite like any of the other top names on my list (which are mostly all [name]German[/name] / Germanic but are more recognisable). So can you tell me what your impression of the name would be? Would you assume it were made up? Does it sound trendy (which I wouldn’t want)? What do you think of the nickname [name]Ada[/name] for it (common nickname is [name]Jada[/name] but I prefer [name]Ada[/name]; too far of a stretch?)?

Thanks!

Since most people will never have met or even heard of a real-life Jadzia, the only one they’ll remember is the [name]Star[/name] Trek character. (Hey - at least she says her name right, unlike [name]Nerys[/name]!) [name]Just[/name] like the only [name]Hedwig[/name] people would think of is [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name]'s owl.

I didn’t know Jadzia was a real name until now. Still doesn’t give me the guts to use it.

To me it doesn’t look weird or anything and is not to out there, but that’s because of my cultural background, I’ve seen and heard that name a lot.
I think in [name]North[/name] [name]America[/name] it’ll be hard for people to know how to pronounce it, but if that doesn’t bother you then I say go for it!
And I really like [name]Ada[/name] as a nn!

Thanks Triplicate,

I’ll admit I was curious to see if anyone would pick up on the [name]Star[/name] Trek thing because I wouldn’t want people thinking that was the only reason I used it. I just think it’s a really pretty name and if it happens to be after a character who I considered to be a strong, independent and classy women it just makes it all the better.

Thank you [name]Justys[/name],

If you don’t mind me asking, what country do you live in? I’m glad you like [name]Ada[/name] as a nickname, I was worried others wouldn’t see the connection.

[name]Do[/name] any English speakers out there find it hard to pronounce? I actually thought the pronunciation was pretty straight forward but I’d like some outside input.

[name]Hi[/name] [name]Ginger[/name]! My first thought was [name]Star[/name] Trek, because it’s so unusual that I have only heard it on the show. The sound is definitely appealing. The people most likely to say “Hey, [name]Star[/name] Trek!” are the ones who are fans, so it’s probably not that big of a deal. shrug

Thank you Teabee =)

Would anyone else like to share their opinions? I don’t seem to be getting many responses.

This is so one of my guilty pleasure names, and I definitely got it from [name]Star[/name] Trek. Had a kitten named “[name]Dax[/name]” about 13 years ago, but Jadzia for a girl has definitely grown on me since then. To me it can look harsh spelling-wise, but the pronunciation is so pretty. And yeah, unless the person you’re telling is a Trekkie, no one will guess the connection.

Thank you for commenting Theroadtohere,

I didn’t expect to meet so many other [name]Star[/name] Trek fans on here! [name]How[/name] wonderful =)

I had a little girl in my class with this name and I always had a problem remembering how to say her name and I always felt that I had mispronounced it.

It is a difficult name to remember.

However, I do like it and I would see Jad or [name]Zee[/name] as the nn’s.

I also thought of [name]Star[/name] Trek right away, but I think it’s true you’d only get the people who were/are pretty into the shows since it isn’t as much a part of the mainstream as if you named her Uhura or something.
It seems easy to pronounce to me, but I’m a bit of a linguist, so I usually have good guesses at how to pronounce things.
I do like the name [name]Ada[/name], but it doesn’t seem terribly connected to the full name. I think it would be a shame to give her such a pretty full name and then not take full advantage of the interesting sounds in a nn? I’d go with [name]Zia[/name] for a nn, personally.

I’m a moderate Trekkie, but didn’t watch DS9 and didn’t connect the name with Trek. However, I tried my husband and he immediately thought of Ms. [name]Dax[/name].

However, as the others said, I think any Trekkies will think the connection is cool and civilians will simply think it is a lovely name.

I’ve never heard of that name, but I’m not a [name]Star[/name] Trek follower…

For me, it’s odd to pronounce. I don’t think it looks/sounds trendy at all.

I didn’t know of the [name]Star[/name] Trek connection but I have never heard of the name from any other sources either. I might think it was made up but I would be happy to learn that it’s not - it is pretty! It doesn’t look trendy to me at all. For nicknames, I agree with pp that it would be a shame to give her such a pretty name and then use a nickname that isn’t too related. I would probably use [name]Zee[/name] or [name]Zia[/name] myself.

Thank you for yours replies. I agree with you all about the nickname however it was the only thing I could think to do to make it (sort of) fit better with my other names, since I really haven’t found any other names like Jadzia that I like. And I would really hate for her to feel singled out.

I don’t watch star trek. If you are not in a place where there is a [name]German[/name] influence I’m afraid it looks made up. [name]Do[/name] you not like [name]Adelaide[/name]/[name]Adele[/name]? [name]Ada[/name] is a more traditional nn for those names.

What other names are you trying to match up with? Current children or future siblings? I’m sure you’d get some good suggestions either way.

Thank you [name]Devon[/name],

Currently we live in [name]Ireland[/name] where DH is from but because of his job we move around a lot and so we have the potential of living in either the US (where I’m from) or [name]England[/name] or Germany. [name]Adelaide[/name] is another name on my list, I just thought the nickname [name]Ada[/name] might help the name Jadzia fit better amongst my other favourites.

Thank you [name]Rad[/name],
