When you read Jaél, how do you pronounce it in your head?
[name_f][/name_f]I will write what I am going for, but wanted to see general ideas first.
[name_f][/name_f]Thanks!

The one I know says jy-EL, so that’s what I’d assume.
"“jay-el”
yah-ehl with an awareness it is more likely jay-ehl
Hey, thanks for the feedback! That’s what I was hoping.
[name_f][/name_f]Yes, it’s the name [name_f]Jael[/name_f] in the [name_f]English[/name_f] translation, actually Ya’el in Hebrew. We are going for the [name_f]English[/name_f] pronunciation as it would be the first name…but I’ve had some family members joke that they’d say “jail.”
Our other daughters have accents on their names…some needed, some decorative. So, it’s obv pleasing to add one to this name. But I just wondered if the accent would help (Americans) intuitively pronounce it Jay-EL rather than “Jail”.
I would assume jah-EL
I would pronounce it Jay-elle without the accent, because that’s how I’ve heard it said most often. If you want to clarify with an accent marker, I would use a diaeresis (ë) rather than an acute accent (é). Jaél leads me to Jah-ale, whereas Jaël keeps me saying Jay-elle and clarifies that it’s not Jail, just like [name_m]Noël[/name_m] would be pronounced No-elle rather than [name_m]Nole[/name_m].
Great point. Thank you.
I’d probably say jah-AYL? It sounds too close to jail for me.
JA-ehl is how I would pronounce it.
Jail.
[name_f]My[/name_f] friend’s daughter is named Jaél and it’s pretty, pronounced Jay-yell too but it sounds like Jail every time she says it.
either Yah-EL or Jah-EL.
Ya-ELLE
[name_f]My[/name_f] first instinct is jay-elle but then with the accent it made me wonder if it was the Spanish version of the name, so I was wondering if it was more like ha-EL. [name_f][/name_f] Though come to think of it, I feel like whenever the story of [name_f]Jael[/name_f] and the tent peg is brought up, they always say it like “jail”.
Thank you for all the feedback! Gave me a lot to think about.
[name_f][/name_f]I expected “jail” but maybe not so many “yah-el” pronunciations, esp when using “j”. I realize it’s that way when spelled Ya’el, but I didn’t realize so many people think that when they see the J.
[name_f][/name_f]I guess I’ve just been thinking it’s “Jay-Elle” in everyone’s mind (in English)—but perhaps I’m one of only a handful that would say that.
Without reading any other pronunciations or comments…
[name_f][/name_f]I would assume hah-el /high-el with yah-el as a second guess.
