We have known for years that we would name our daughter [name_f]Jane[/name_f], but after years of trying our first baby was a boy-- the lovely and funny [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] [name_m]Xavier[/name_m], now 16 months. I’m now 3 months along and we just found out she’s our [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. We had picked out [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] last time, but I’m less enthusiastic about [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] than I used to be. My husband is stubborn and picky, but here’s the current list we both agree on. Can you rank your favorites?
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Ivy[/name_f].
(I won’t tell my husband because I think it may dissuade him, but I like this one because I come from a long line of diehard Cubs fans and this is a subtle nod to Wrigley [name_m]Field[/name_m]. My mom is in on it and loves it, too.)
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Annabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] Maylin (a grandmother smoosh)
Our last name is 2 syllables, starts with [name_f]Bre[/name_f] and sort of rhymes with beetle.
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] is one of my favorite combos (I’ve got a niece with this name!)-- maybe this would work instead of [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]? [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f] is another favorite combo.
Here’s how I rank your list from top to bottom:
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] (love the subtle nod to family tradition)
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] (classic)
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Annabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] Maylin (it just sounds too close to me)
I’m guessing that the names you are trying to smoosh together for a family name are something similar to [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Lynne[/name_f]. Some more possibilities with these:
From favorite to:
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Annabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] (love [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], but don’t like the [name_u]Jay[/name_u] and Hay sounds together, too rhymey)
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] Maylin (not fan of the [name_u]Jay[/name_u] and [name_f]May[/name_f] sounds together and the other combos are so classic and lovely…though I’m all for honoring family)
Since Maylin is a smoosh name for the grandmothers, would [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Marilyn[/name_f] work?
[name_f]Marilyn[/name_f] is so close to Maylin but sounds much better with [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]IMO[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Annabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] Maylin (I agree with the others that there may be other options for the smoosh that could work better than Maylin)
Any off list suggestions are fun, but not helpful. We’ve been through the entire name book and that’s what we both agree on. We do like Louise, and more so Louisa, but my husband says Jane Louisa is too literary. That’s how we got to Eloise in the first place.
The more I think about this, the more I’m leaning toward Ivy or Marigold. I like Ivy because Jane Ivy rolls off the tongue so easily we could probably frequently call her by her full name. I like Marigold because it’s unusual and a little daring.
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is my favorite! I also love [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]. [name_m]How[/name_m] about:
No, only names off the list will work. And we’ve decided we’re no longer so into [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]. Maybe because 2 years have gone by, and we want something new.
