Jasmine - 1985 or ok now?

Found out I am having a girl today! My daughter is called [name]Maple[/name]. I have a long list of names I like - [name]Iris[/name], [name]Hazel[/name], [name]Daisy[/name], [name]Lucy[/name], [name]Cecily[/name], [name]Penelope[/name], [name]Florence[/name]/[name]Flora[/name], [name]Clover[/name], [name]Daphne[/name], [name]Pearl[/name], etc. My husband likes [name]Jasmine[/name]. I like it, but it feels super dated. I know [name]Hazel[/name] and [name]Pearl[/name] are “old lady names”, but I think they are so old they are cool. I worry [name]Jasmine[/name] is just tired and every other cheerleader from 1985. But maybe it is fresh again? I do really like the name itself.

[name]Jasmine[/name]'s had her time in the sun awhile ago. You can look at the Social Security site to see the overall trend for 30 years or so. It’ll give you an idea of its popularity.

[name]Jasmine[/name]'s a nice name, but I honestly think it would look very boring next to [name]Maple[/name] (which I love by the way!). From your list I like [name]Daisy[/name], [name]Cecily[/name], [name]Flora[/name] (not [name]Florence[/name]), [name]Clover[/name], and [name]Pearl[/name]!

I love the name [name]Jasmine[/name]!! My only problem with the name is all the people who spell it weird XD… [name]Jazmyn[/name], etc :frowning: YUCK!

I think you’re right to be wary of [name]Jasmine[/name]'s dated feel. [name]Flora[/name] and [name]Hazel[/name] would be beautiful, fitting sisters for the gorgeous [name]Maple[/name].

It’s kind of Disney princess-y right now, but I think it’s gorgeous, and will eventually be seen as classic. I love Persian names.

I always think of [name]Jasmine[/name] rice when I hear it (which is delicious!) but I also think [name]Jasmine[/name] sounds almost too exotic next to [name]Maple[/name]. From your list I think [name]Hazel[/name], [name]Florence[/name], or [name]Pearl[/name] are my favorite and go best with [name]Maple[/name].

It’s easier for me to see a girl and a woman wearing [name]Iris[/name], [name]Lucy[/name], [name]Cecily[/name], [name]Penelope[/name], [name]Daphne[/name], and [name]Jasmine[/name] better than [name]Hazel[/name], [name]Daisy[/name], [name]Florence[/name]/[name]Flora[/name], [name]Clover[/name], and [name]Pearl[/name].

To me, [name]Jasmine[/name] is quite dated, but it is such a pretty name that its “dated” feel is not as negative to me as it is for other names, like [name]Heather[/name].

What about [name]Jessamine[/name]? Or Jasleen?

I second the suggest of [name]Jessamine[/name] it’s an earlier spelling of [name]Jasmine[/name] that feels a bit fresher and I think it works better with [name]Maple[/name]. I feel [name]Jessamine[/name] has all the positive aspects of [name]Jasmine[/name] without the somewhat dated feel and it is such a lovely name!

I love the name [name_f]Maple[/name_f] btw and just out of interest what nicknames do you give her?
I like [name_f]Flora[/name_f], [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]. Other ideas are: [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] and Epiphanie.

I think [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] is perfectly fine to use still, though I guess it depends how popular it got in your area growing up. For me, I’ve only ever known three, so I don’t see it as being dated the way that someone that always had a [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] or two in every class, after school club and sports team they were on might do.

I love [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] -very pretty and exotic!

I’m interested to see what you chose!!!

I know this is an old thread, but I think [name_f]Maple[/name_f] and [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] would be great sisters. Would you feel it locked you into word-ish names? I could see [name_f]Maple[/name_f], [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] as sisters. [name_f]Maple[/name_f] and [name_f]Flora[/name_f] would be quirky and darling.

All I can think of is [name_m]Aladdin[/name_m]'s princess. I don’t care for it and it doesn’t have the chic feel that [name_f]Maple[/name_f] does (which I <3). From your list I love:

Iris
Hazel
Florence
Clover (forgot how much I LOVE this name)
Pearl

Jessamine, as mentioned, has a combination of both of your tastes it seems

Keep in mind, if you pick another nature themed name, be prepared for future siblings! A strong trend like that should be kept, IMO.

I actually really like the name [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f]. I’ve never met another, and I’m a teacher who spends a lot of time with kids born in the 90s. (and I was born in the 80s). I always think of the flower because yellow jasmine was the state flower where I grew up. [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] had its peak in the mid-90s, but it never got past the top 25. I’m a bit of the opinion that most all flower names are timeless, even if they get a surge in popularity every once in a while (like [name_f]Lily[/name_f] has now). However, I also really like the french form [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f].

I don’t think it’s too dated, though it is pretty much engrained in the Disney princess association. My problem is that though [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] and [name_f]Maple[/name_f] are botanical names, they give off very different styles and vibes. [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] is a little exotic, feminine and sweet, while [name_f]Maple[/name_f] is quirky, bouncy and modern. [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f] works better, but I think a name off of your list like [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] would work better. [name_m]Even[/name_m] the “old lady” names you listed, while beautiful, don’t fit in with [name_f]Maple[/name_f]'s out-of-the-box style.

I really like [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] but I also love [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]. I try not to think of the popularity too much because then you limit yourself so much however I do end up giving bonus points to names I love if they are uncommon or rare. I can’t really help it so I do understand that but if I love a name and it happens to be #1, like [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], i’m still going to love it. Basically what i’m trying to say is if you really love a name go for it regardless if you love it enough. I’ve looked at the social security names thing for the year I was born, 89, and last year. The number one name in 89 had almost 50k people with that name but the number one last year only had 20k something, I think like 22k…less and less people are using the most popular names these days.

[name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] feels far from dated to me, where I live in Tasmania I know several little Jasmines (under 9), one born quite recently.
I do think that some of your other choices ‘go’ better with [name_f]Maple[/name_f], however that wouldn’t bother me
