Jasper or Casper?

[name_u]Jasper[/name_u] has been my top boy name for a while now. [name_m]Even[/name_m] before my husband changed his mind on having another baby. I really like [name_m]Casper[/name_m] too, but have never given it much thought because I figured people would laugh at the friendly ghost association. Plus my NN is [name_f]Cat[/name_f]. :person_facepalming: If you’ve seen the movie you’ll know that [name_f]Christina[/name_f] Ricci’s character is [name_f]Cat[/name_f]. But I just saw a post about [name_m]Casper[/name_m] by someone else in a baby name group on FB and I’m so surprised by the positive reaction to it! I really like that it starts with C like my name (our other son’s name starts with a B like Dad’s) and I also like that it’s a lot less popular than [name_u]Jasper[/name_u]. That’s been my main complaint about [name_u]Jasper[/name_u]. It’s way more popular than my other kids’ names. So what do y’all think? [name_u]Jasper[/name_u] or [name_m]Casper[/name_m]? And is [name_m]Casper[/name_m] ridiculous with a mom nicknamed [name_f]Cat[/name_f]?

I love both but [name_m]Casper[/name_m] is a longtime favorite of mine! I know a little [name_m]Casper[/name_m] and he wears it well- you might get an occasional ghost comment but I don’t think it’s a bad association! No different than [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_f]Minnie[/name_f], [name_u]Franklin[/name_u], or any other names associated with a kid’s cartoon character.

As [name_u]Jasper[/name_u] gets more and more popular (and probably continues to rise in future years) I think [name_m]Casper[/name_m] is a great alternative.

Such a tough choice!

[name_u]Jasper[/name_u] is sleek, stylish and intriguing.

[name_m]Casper[/name_m] is slightly softer, a little braver, but intriguing too.

I’ve met one [name_m]Casper[/name_m] and it suited him well  I’d probably go with [name_m]Casper[/name_m] in your case!

I like [name_m]Casper[/name_m] and know someone who’s names their kid it and I did immediately think about the ghost but I wouldn’t say it is a bad thing at all. Tbh I’ve seen [name_m]Casper[/name_m] a few times but never knew her name was [name_f]Cat[/name_f] so I wouldn’t of made the association. I like [name_u]Jasper[/name_u] but think [name_m]Casper[/name_m] is much better it just has more like character to it. I really wouldn’t over think it at all.

They’re both great, but I prefer [name_u]Jasper[/name_u]. It has a wonderful outdoorsy, warm vibe.

Looks like it’s pretty well split. After some thinking on it, I’m going to stick with [name_u]Jasper[/name_u]. [name_m]Casper[/name_m] just doesn’t give me the warm and fuzzies that [name_u]Jasper[/name_u] does. Thanks for your responses!

I really like [name_u]Jasper[/name_u]. [name_m]Casper[/name_m] is fine but I would worry people would always bring up [name_m]Casper[/name_m] the friendly ghost as well and to me, it wouldn’t be worth the worry. What about [name_m]Caspian[/name_m]? Most Berries seem to really love this name and it’s obviously similar but not [name_m]Casper[/name_m].

@Sailor22 I do like [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] too, but all of my kids’ names end in N and it’s not a theme I want to continue to be stuck in.

I really like [name_u]Jasper[/name_u], and I loved the [name_m]Casper[/name_m] movie as a kid so I have a strong association. I find practicing the name around the house helps, your gut has a preference and no one’s online opinion matters in the end. You might look into other gem/mineral names if the meaning is significant to you. A few names with a similar sound:

[name_m]Alister[/name_m]
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m]
[name_u]Spencer[/name_u]
[name_m]Haldor[/name_m]

They’re both nice, but I love [name_m]Casper[/name_m]

And I wouldn’t worry about the movie reference. It came out in 1995 (!), the H [name_u]Duff[/name_u] one was ‘98 - some parents may make the association but it’ll be ancient to kids born in the 2020s.

And for what it’s worth I couldn’t remember [name_f]Christina[/name_f] Ricci’s character’s name at all.

[name_u]Jasper[/name_u] is classic, familiar, and oh so handsome. [name_m]Casper[/name_m] is sweet as well, but I can’t get over the friendly ghost :joy: :ghost:. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like any alternatives like [name_m]Cassius[/name_m], [name_m]Cassian[/name_m], [name_m]Caspian[/name_m]? I really don’t think [name_u]Jasper[/name_u] is as common in real life as it is on here. That being said, we just named our kitten [name_u]Jasper[/name_u] and he matches the name so well. I’d say go for it!

I prefer [name_u]Jasper[/name_u]. [name_m]Casper[/name_m] is nice too, but yes, I immediately think of the ghost. At the same time I totally agree with @ocjacq50. It’s an old movie and probably the only person who would perhaps make some ‘ghost’ remark would be his bitter middle aged future math teacher if he gets caught skipping her class  I really doubt kids his age would even know the movie. In my country [name_m]Kaspar[/name_m] is pretty common.
