[name_m]Hi[/name_m], everyone I’m [name_f]Aisha[/name_f] and I’m 7 months pregnant & also new to Nameberry. Me & my husband are having a baby girl & we have decided on the name [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m] after falling in love with it from the second we heard it. I know that one of the ladies on the View is called [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m] but I was wondering if it’s to unusual? We live in the UK so it’s not really used on boys here. Wdyt of the name [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m] on a girl?
[name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m] is not even in the top 5,000 for girls in the U.S. Jedidah is a female name…she was the mother of [name_m]King[/name_m] [name_m]Josiah[/name_m]. Though I do prefer the sound of [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m]. With [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m] Bila from The View it’s popularity will probably go up a bit.
I love it for a girl. I like it for a boy.
I think, because it’s a biblically a boy’s name, it will be viewed more of a boy’s than a girl’s name. I don’t mind it personally, and I think the nickname [name_m]Jed[/name_m] would be pretty cute. I like the previous suggestion of Jedidah, which I think is really cute. Maybe you’d like Jedda?
I think that it’d be a risky choice. It’s true that it isn’t popular for boys over here but, it’s still a boy name and I think your average [name_u]Jo[/name_u] is fully aware of that. There are a fair few Biblical names in the top 1000 for boys at the moment - [name_u]Noah[/name_u], [name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_m]Jonah[/name_m], [name_m]Abdullah[/name_m], [name_u]Micah[/name_u], [name_m]Jeremiah[/name_m], [name_m]Josiah[/name_m], [name_m]Zachariah[/name_m], [name_m]Judah[/name_m] and [name_m]Zephaniah[/name_m], to be specific, and so I think there is a very high likelihood it will be acknowledged as masculine, which is what it is. And, in this particular situation, you’ve got to think about how your daughter would feel about the boy name [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m]. In my personal opinion, I think you’d be better off with something more markedly feminine like [name_f]Jayda[/name_f], [name_f]Jadah[/name_f], [name_f]Jemima[/name_f], [name_f]Jalilah[/name_f] etc.
Horrible. Jedidah is a girl’s name though.
[name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m] is a wonderful biblical boy’s name! [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] is another great biblical name, although feminine, would you consider it for a son?
[name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m] is lovely… for a boy. I agree with the suggestion of Jedidah.
I think you should explore similar names. Is it the dye-uh sound you like? That’s what I like about it. [name_f]Dinah[/name_f] comes immediately to mind, but I’m sure there are other options out there if you search. But if after the end of the day [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m] is “the one”…you said your partner likes it too…then go for it. You know for sure she won’t be the absolutely only one. Have fun!
Thank you everyone for replying. I understand [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m] is a traditionally boy name but I really do love it for my daughter & I also do like the suggestion of Jedidah.
Please don’t give that name to a girl. Maybe save it for a boy.
I’m also considering the name [name_f]Mariah[/name_f]. But I feel like it’s to tied to [name_f]Mariah[/name_f] [name_u]Carey[/name_u] & my husband likes [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m] more.
I don’t think [name_f]Mariah[/name_f] is too tied to [name_f]Mariah[/name_f] [name_u]Carey[/name_u] (I think of [name_f]Mariah[/name_f] [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] in Pride and Prejudice). I also think [name_f]Mariah[/name_f] is far prettier than [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m], which is all boy to me. You could consider [name_f]Moriah[/name_f], which sounds almost identical but is less linked to the singer.
I think in the UK, where boys name on girls is far less common than it is in the US, it will definitely raise a lot of eyebrows and you will get a lot of people assuming you had a boy. If that doesn’t bother you and you think it won’t bother her, then if you really love, sure - why not? But I often feel with this sort of thing that if you’re not equally as willing to name a son something like [name_f]Demelza[/name_f] (as unused for girls in the UK as [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m] is for boys) then it’s a bit of a double standard. [name_m]Just[/name_m] because the name isn’t particularly well used on any particular gender doesn’t mean it doesn’t still have a strong association with one.
I would save [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m] for a son and find another name with the ‘eye-ah’ sound you seem to like - [name_f]Kaia[/name_f], [name_f]Amaia[/name_f], [name_f]Delilah[/name_f], [name_f]Diana[/name_f] etc. I really like [name_f]Moriah[/name_f]/[name_f]Mariah[/name_f].
[name_f]Edit[/name_f]: [name_f]Saraia[/name_f], [name_f]Sarai[/name_f] or [name_f]Naiara[/name_f] might also fit your style.
I definitely think of [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m] as a boys name. That said I think Diah/Daya would work really well either as a stand-alone name or nickname for a female [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m]. And, if you guys are [name_f]Star[/name_f] Wars fans, [name_m]Jedi[/name_m] would be a super cute nick, too.
[name_f]Mariah[/name_f] is lovely! I don’t think it’s too tied to [name_f]Mariah[/name_f] [name_u]Carey[/name_u] at all! I personally would not use [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m] for a girl. It’s a nice name but she would be constantly assumed to be a boy and, honestly, I would assume that parents of a daughter named [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m] wanted a boy and were disappointed to have a girl. At the end of the day, it’s your baby and you can name her as you please but I wouldn’t do it.

Thank you everyone for your opinions! In the end my husband and I have decided for definite that where going to name our daughter [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m]. Hopefully she loves her name as much as we do.
Awww well that’s good your going with the name you like. [name_f]Deedee[/name_f] is a cute nickname when she’s little. My only thing is do you have another boys name you love just as much.
[name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m] is not a girls name. The fact that it isn’t a widely used name doesn’t mean that you can use it on the opposite gender. My personal belief is that when you want to use a name from another culture {or religion - if you aren’t [name_m]Christian[/name_m] or Jewish in this case}, you should respect the gender of the name {would you like it if your name was say [name_m]Marcus[/name_m]?}
If you like the sound, you can still use Jedidah, which is a female name, like @amynic suggested
In the end we decided against the name [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m]. I named my daughter [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] who we welcomed into this world two weeks ago, after seeing the name [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] on this thread, so thank you!
Congrats! I like [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].
