Jem for a boy

What do you guys all think of the nickname [name_u]Jem[/name_u], short for [name_u]James[/name_u]? It’s a traditional boys name (literary references include [name_u]Jem[/name_u] in To Kill a Mockingbird, and [name_u]Anne[/name_u] Shirley’s oldest son), but it is not widely used anymore. Does it sound to much like feminine Gem/Gemma/Jemma?

It works as a nickname for [name_u]James[/name_u] (or Jeremy), but not as a full name.

I love Jem! Both as a nickname for James/Jamie, and on its own. I think it’s a very sweet name for a boy, and very in trend with other short, gentle names like Kit and Remy. Some people might mix it up with Gem and think it’s a girl’s name, but I don’t think that’s a big issue.

I absolutely adore [name_u]Jem[/name_u] for a boy! I absolutely don’t find it too feminine. The literary connotations are just the cherry on top of this wonderful name. I like it short for [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_m]Jeremy[/name_m], too!

I adore [name_u]Jem[/name_u]! It’s been on my own list for years. Sweet, sensitive, literary but punchy and cool too. [name_u]Love[/name_u] it as a standalone or short for [name_u]James[/name_u].

I love [name_u]Jem[/name_u] :heart:gentle, but boyish -I think it works

I adore [name_u]Jem[/name_u]! It’s one of the nicknames I used for the baby boy I watch (his name is a longer form of James). I personally don’t find it too feminine at all and I think it works well as a full name or as a nickname

I know a [name_m]Jeremy[/name_m] who goes by [name_u]Jem[/name_u] and I think it’s sweet !

I don’t think [name_u]Jem[/name_u] sounds feminine, but also don’t think it works as a standalone name, personally.

I adore [name_u]Jem[/name_u] though— as a nickname for [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_u]Jamison[/name_u], [name_m]Jeremy[/name_m], [name_m]Jeremiah[/name_m], or anything similar.

I’ve never liked [name_m]Jim[/name_m] so I find it a refreshing alternative.

I love [name_u]Jem[/name_u] both on its own and as a nickname for [name_u]James[/name_u]. I actually taught a [name_u]Jem[/name_u] and despite its similarity to [name_f]Jemma[/name_f] it felt very boyish and spunky IRL.

love it! more as a standalone than as a nn, but i do think it works better as a nn for a longer name like james, jeremy, etc

I think it works well as a nickname, especially for [name_m]Jeremy[/name_m]. But be prepared for it to be confused with and spelled as [name_m]Jim[/name_m].

I say [name_u]Jem[/name_u] the same as [name_m]Jim[/name_m]. I actually knew a [name_u]Jem[/name_u] and they could hear me saying “Jim” but I couldn’t discern a difference. [name_f]Gem[/name_f], [name_u]Jem[/name_u], [name_m]Jim[/name_m] is all the same to me!
