Jemima nickname Jem or Jemmie

What do you guys think of a little girl named [name]Jemima[/name], nicknamed [name]Jem[/name] or [name]Jemmie[/name]?

[name]Jem[/name]! I love this name!

I’m not really a fan as all I can think of is the syrup. The name doesn’t feel ready for a revival to me. [name]Do[/name] you like [name]Gemma[/name]?

It carries a supreme amount of baggage in the US, so if you’re here I would avoid it. It has a sweet sound and those nicknames are cute. I also think [name]Mim[/name] (pronounced Mem), [name]Mima[/name] (pronounced Meema), or [name]Jemma[/name]/[name]Gemma[/name] could work. If you are in the US and don’t want the weight of [name]Jemima[/name] – [name]Gemma[/name], [name]Jeanette[/name], or [name]Genevieve[/name] might work, and you could use the same nicknames.

PP have a good point. I would go with [name]Jemma[/name] or [name]Gemma[/name], nn [name]Jem[/name] or [name]Gem[/name].

I also really like the nickname [name]Mimi[/name]. Thanks for the alternative suggestions!!! I love [name]Jemima[/name] but I don’t know that I could actually use it.

If you’re in the US I’d stay away from it altogether. Too many negative racial connotations.

[name]Love[/name] [name]Jemima[/name], personally I’d use [name]Jem[/name] because it reminds me of To Kill a Mockingbird.

So I’m in the South, and [name]Jem[/name] is completely indistinguishable from [name]Jim[/name], and [name]Jemmy[/name] from [name]Jimmy[/name]. Does it sound different where you are? I don’t get it. I’d go [name]Jemma[/name], personally.

Also, as a Southern resident, I think the Jemima-mammy-slavery connotation is about over. I think most people would find it a very unusual name, and maybe connect it to the syrup, but I don’t really think it conjures up negative black/white relations like people seem to think it does. At least for younger generations, and certainly your child’s.

In my mouth [name]Jem[/name] rhymes with Them, and [name]Jim[/name] rhymes with Him. Does that make sense? They are slightly different the way I say it.

I live in the South, too, and [name]Jemima[/name] still has lots of negative associations for black people, at least.

I agree with [name]Phoebe[/name] that [name]Jem[/name] and [name]Jim[/name] are pretty close, but for me, are not indistinguishable. [name]Jem[/name], sounds like “gem”, like a gem you’d wear around your name. [name]Jemmy[/name] is less usable, in my opinion, now that I think about it, and will end up sounding like [name]Jimmy[/name].

That is the best news I have heard in about six years!!

I think that [name]Jemima[/name] is a really gorgeous name, very biblical, feminine. sweet, classic and my favourite nn is [name]Mimi[/name] ([name]Mim[/name] ee)

And yes in [name]Oz[/name] there is a difference between [name]Jim[/name] and [name]Jem[/name], a big difference.

Honestly, in my neck of the woods in south [name]Louisiana[/name], I promise everyone would wonder why you named your kid after the syrup/pancake mix. Lol I doubt if any of the new generations even know how tied the name used to be to salvery. I could easily use it, but it isn’t really my style.
