Over the holidays, my husband broached the “girl name” topic again. We’ve been leaving it alone, because we did find one that we both liked/loved, and really… we only need one for now.
Not sure what brought it to mind, but I had mentioned to him in the past that I liked [name]Echo[/name] for a girl - guilty pleasure, yes. He said that he’s starting to like the name [name]Jericho[/name], and that her nn could be [name]Echo[/name].
I have two reservations - 1) I’m all about bending the gender rules on names, but I think [name]Jericho[/name] sounds very harshly manly. She would get a softer middle name, (Sesa, [name]Eve[/name], or [name]Bell[/name]) but since middle names are seldom ever used after the birth announcement, it doesn’t really matter all that much. 2) My ex was [name]Jeremy[/name], and I keep hearing his name when I say [name]JERicho[/name].
Anyways, my main question is - what do you think of [name]Jericho[/name] for a girl? Avant garde, or too out there?
For those who like these types of things, our last name is 4 syllables and starts with an M.
Not a fan of [name]Jericho[/name] on a girl. There’s nothing feminine about it. I hear [name]Jerry[/name], [name]Rick[/name], and [name]Rico[/name] in [name]Jericho[/name], none of which are feminine. What about Jera or [name]Jerica[/name]?
[name]Jericho[/name] is an ancient city which no longer exists, and as such I think it’s genderless. It’s definitely uncommon as a given name.
Honestly the average family who selects this name would probably be classified as hipstery green evangelical Christians. Not sure if this is your family, since you’re also considering [name]Echo[/name], so that might something to keep in mind.
Believe it or not, I actually know a [name]Jericho[/name]. She goes by [name]Jeri[/name] and now has three kids of her own with beautiful unexpected names. I think it’s lovely and I don’t think it ever gave her any trouble. I assume she loved having such a truly unique name since she passed the tradition on to her children.
I also know a girl named [name]Echo[/name]. She’s my favorite barista at my morning coffee stand.
Since one of my friends recently had a baby girl and named her Jeremyah (NN [name]Mya[/name]), a baby girl named [name]Jericho[/name] (NN [name]Echo[/name]) would not surprise me at all. My friend’s name is [name]Marque[/name] by the way, and it fits her perfectly.
I know a girl named [name]Jericho[/name] and I also know a girl named Jericha.
I don’t think it sounds any more masculine than [name]Justine[/name], [name]Erica[/name] or [name]Nicole[/name].
Perfect then! [name]Do[/name] you like names like [name]Galilee[/name], [name]Jubilee[/name], [name]Nazareth[/name], Kidron, [name]Caedmon[/name], [name]Salem[/name], [name]Sephora[/name], [name]Titus[/name], [name]Hadassah[/name]? Bible names with a twist?
Seeing as [name]Jericho[/name] is a place, I don’t feel like it really has a gender. I don’t mind it, though I do prefer other things - I like [name]Echo[/name] as the nickname, thats really cute.
[name]Jericho[/name] still exists but I agree with you as a place name it’s pretty gender neutral though it seems more masculine to me, it seems like from other posters it’s successfully been used as a girls name so why not?
"The name [name]Jericho[/name] may mean City Of The [name]Moon[/name] ([name]Jones[/name]’ Dictionary of Old Testament Proper Names) or Place Of Fragrance (NOBS Study Bible Name List).[1]
“]Biblical city (Num. xxii:1, etc.), perhaps ultimately from Hebrew yareakh “moon, month,” and thus a reference to an ancient moon cult. As a figurative place of retirement (17c.), the reference is to II [name]Sam[/name]. x:5.”[2]
Until I heard that it was your choice for a daughter I thought that it was an inspired choice but for a daughter [name]Jemima[/name] [name]Echo[/name] nn of [name]Mimi[/name] would be my choice.
Hey everyone - thanks for your input and suggestions. We’re not really looking for a variation of the name though, and sorry, but [name]Coco[/name] will always be a stripper/porn star name to me… and the name of MANY of our friend’s dogs. So that one is definitly out.
I too have [name]Echo[/name] on my guilty pleasure list. However I cant seem to wrap my head around [name]Jericho[/name] for a girl. Probably, because I’ve never considered it before. But, I can see it as a name that could grow on me.
I was looking at your signature and thought this would be something to consider:
I love [name]Willow[/name] and feel that it has a very similar feel to [name]Echo[/name]. It is beautiful, slightly sad and ethereal.
[name]Jericho[/name] breaks away from that; it’s harder, grittier and more grounded.
I think it just comes down to what you want your childs name to mean and feel like. The names are different enough that if you waited to meet her you might automatically know which is right.
Can hardly believe that 3 1/2 years, and three children later, we actually had our girl, and named her [name_u]Jericho[/name_u]! My husband just never got it out of his mind, and I thought it’d be really special for him to have that connection with our daughter.
I definitely call her [name_u]Echo[/name_u], but our sons call her [name_u]Baby[/name_u] J - so much love all around! ”
