I’ve been rewatching Toddlers and Tiaras lately for some inspiration for names to add to my list. I came across a contestant named Jersie. I know Jersie is so not within the typical style of names that pop up on here (heck, it’s a little out there for me too), but I’m really liking it.
Am I losing it? Is Jersie completely terrible, or, could it work? What are your thoughts on it (I’m not crazy about [name_u]Jersey[/name_u] as a spelling)?
As far as associations go, it’s the name of a small town near where I live, so I thought of that first. Next, the word jersey comes to mind, as in football jerseys. Then of course, there’s [name_m]New[/name_m] [name_u]Jersey[/name_u] and [name_u]Jersey[/name_u] Shore (although maybe those might not be such an issue outside of the US? I’m not sure.).
In my honest opinion, [name_u]Jersey[/name_u]/Jersie is too much of a word to make a good baby name. I saw another thread awhile back where the OP wondered why no one ever considered [name_f]Spring[/name_f], as in the season, as a baby name when [name_f]Autumn[/name_f], [name_f]Summer[/name_f], and [name_u]Winter[/name_u] were perfectly acceptable, and the unanimous agreement between posters was that [name_f]Spring[/name_f] had more than one meaning outside of the season, so that made it less appealing as a baby name. Assuming that made any kind of sense, that’s how I feel about [name_u]Jersey[/name_u]. It has too many meanings, none of which seem particularly flattering, to use as a baby name.
I think with the cow, cardigan, places, ([name_m]New[/name_m] [name_u]Jersey[/name_u], and the channel island) and the show it’s a bit much for a human name. Plus because of all those associations I feel the alternative spelling would be a little difficult to grasp.
If you take away all the meanings and just focus on the sound Jersie. I think its sounds kinda cute. It’s similar to [name_u]Jessie[/name_u]. But once you add in all the meanings/associations then its less appealing to me.
It’s one of those where it doesn’t necessarily have BAD associations but it also doesn’t have GOOD ones. Sort of like [name_u]Maison[/name_u] for me; [name_u]Maison[/name_u] means “house” in [name_m]French[/name_m] which isn’t a bad meaning, but isn’t a nice one either. Jersie reminds me of [name_m]New[/name_m] [name_u]Jersey[/name_u] and a sports jersey. Both very neutral associations to me. Although, [name_u]Jersey[/name_u] Shore is kinda negative.
However, the Jersie spelling actually makes me want to say it [name_m]JER[/name_m]-see instead of [name_m]JER[/name_m]-zee, and for some reason the soft S makes me think of “jerky” or “jerk” (specifically the verb “jerk”, not the noun). Maybe because I have things that come to my head first with the hard S sound but not with the soft S? I’m not sure.
I think [name_f]Journey[/name_f] is a similar alternative with much nicer connotations.
I use to love [name_u]Jersey[/name_u] as a boy name 10 years ago. I like that it was a sports type of name, my love for soccer was strong back in the day lol.
And then [name_u]Jersey[/name_u] Shore blew up and [name_u]Jersey[/name_u] lost its sparkle as a boy name for me.
What about [name_u]Jensen[/name_u]? I find it very similar to [name_u]Jersey[/name_u] and still has its sparkle. Although [name_u]Jensen[/name_u] is more of a boy name to me. [name_u]Presley[/name_u] popped into my mind as an alternative girls name for Jersie.
lol have you not noticed that my signature kind of screams “pageant girl names”? that’s why. not that it’s really any of your business where I get inspiration from, but thanks.
I actually know a little girl named Jersie she’s around 7 now. When I first heard her name, I was put off. It made me think of the cow (we are in a small, rural, farming community, so there ya go), football jerseys, [name_m]New[/name_m] [name_u]Jersey[/name_u], [name_u]Jersey[/name_u] Boys, and [name_u]Jersey[/name_u] Girl. Some of those are positive associations, others not so much. It’s definitely not too common, that’s for sure, so maybe that is why it is hard for some to see it as a legitimate (or decent) name.
Personally, it grew on me, once I had an actual face to associate the name with. I’m not crazy about it, but I do think that it could work.
