[name_u]Ever[/name_u] since watching [name_m]Gilmore[/name_m] Girls I’ve really began loving the idea of [name_u]Jess[/name_u] on a boy which is weird since I find it dated and all out awful on a girl since I know too many. I’m not a big fan of [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] either (I see it as too femimine) so if I were to use [name_u]Jess[/name_u] it would be as a first name. What’s everyones general opinions of it? Is it too feminine? too dated?Too nicknamey? Or just not a good choice?
[name_u]Jess[/name_u] as a name on its own has always been male on the US top 1000, historically. It could be short for Jesson, [name_m]Jefferson[/name_m], or [name_m]Jessop[/name_m].
I like all those long form options less then [name_u]Jesse[/name_u]. I’m in Australia and have never met a male [name_u]Jess[/name_u]. It’s been off the top 1000 since 1996 for males.
[name_u]Jess[/name_u] on it’s own sounds like it’s meant to be short for something. [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] is a classic biblical male name, and I think it’s really nice. You could always name a son [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] and call him [name_u]Jess[/name_u]. That way he’ll have a full, formal name to fall back on.
I think it is a little nicknamey, but definitely not too dated or feminine. I think it’s cool and classic and handsome. I like it as a nn for [name_u]Jess[/name_u], but feel like it could work for many Je- names, especially with an S middle ([name_m]Jeremiah[/name_m] [name_m]Sirius[/name_m] for example) or even [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]/[name_m]Josiah[/name_m].
It’s not terrible as a full first, it stands on its own better than something like [name_u]Robbie[/name_u] or [name_m]Ed[/name_m]. It’s just a little insubstantial [name_f]IMO[/name_f].
I actually think that [name_u]Jess[/name_u] sounds quite handsome on a boy. But I do agree it does sound more like a nickname, and a longer, more substantial name would be nice to fall back on.
Her are some Jes- names I thought might work as a longer version, if you’d like to use one:
Jesiah
Jesimiel
[name_m]Jesper[/name_m] (The Dutch version of this name is pronounced Yes-per, but I think you could get away with pronouncing it with a hard J in an English speaking country.)
[name_m]Jessop[/name_m]
I like it. I think it works.
