Jesse or Jessie?

Hey everyone,
[name_m]Just[/name_m] wondering which spelling of [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] you prefer as a nickname for J3ssica.
I know [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] is the more traditionally female spelling variant or the name although they are both listed as gender neutral. Would [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] be interpreted as androgynous or mostly female? If you saw the spelling [name_u]Jessie[/name_u], would you automatically think a gender?
Now, [name_u]Jesse[/name_u]. I love that this spelling is more streamlined, and it feels effortlessly cool. Would it be automatically assumed to be male though? And I’m not sure whether it’s too masculine feeling. Would [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] work on a girl? (E.g. on someone with a more tomboy aesthetic, but also someone with a feminine girly aesthetic) [name_u]Or[/name_u] would [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] be better to avoid confusion, as well as generally being nicer?
I’d love to heat your thoughts,
Thanks

I do think of [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] as the feminine spelling and [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] as the masculine. I wouldn’t recommend the [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] spelling on its own as a name for a girl because I do think that most people would assume it’s a boy name, but, as a nn for J3ssica, I really think you could use whichever spelling you prefer.

Seconding everything @elanorelle said!

From what you’ve written, it sounds like you maybe prefer [name_u]Jesse[/name_u]? In that case, I think [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] definitely works as a nickname on any gender.

I actually prefer [name_u]Jesse[/name_u]! Yes, it’s the more masculine spelling, but like you said, it’s more streamlined, and I can actually see it on anyone, even someone with a more girly aesthetic

I prefer [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] for a girl and [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] for a boy

I prefer [name_u]Jesse[/name_u]! It’s pretty gender neutral in my mind, and I like the spelling a lot.

[name_u]Jessie[/name_u] for a girl, jesse for a boy

I think [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] tends to be associated with girls more and [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] associated with boys; however, I do think either spelling could definitely work for either gender!

I’d automatically assume [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] was femme and [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] was masc, but I’ve known a female [name_u]Jesse[/name_u]! I think they can both work either way, but they’d likely be perceived differently by some people. I don’t think that’s a big deal, just something that’ll manifest sometimes in life.

I do think [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] would be assumed to be female, whereas [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] is more masculine - at least here in the UK where [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] ranks in the top 100 for boys. Still, I do think [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] could be used for a girl - it has a cool feel and I don’t see why it couldn’t work

I would assume female for [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] and male for [name_u]Jesse[/name_u]. I think [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] could work for a girl but some people might make an incorrect assumption if they were in a postion to read her nickname written down before meeting her but on the other hand, plenty of women out there go by [name_u]Sam[/name_u], [name_u]Alex[/name_u], [name_u]Chris[/name_u], etc. and make it work so I don’t see why [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] couldn’t. I personally prefer [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] for [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] because both names having an i makes more sense to me visually than just [name_u]Jesse[/name_u], I think since there isn’t a second e near the end of [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] so I want the i there to sort of bridge from the [name_u]Jess[/name_u] to the e? [name_u]Or[/name_u] maybe since the i is already there it feels weird to me to cut it out?

I actually know a “girly-girl” named [name_u]Jesse[/name_u]! I think either would work, but in general I would still assume [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] is a girl and [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] a boy.

I prefer [name_u]Jessy[/name_u] actually! I would assume [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] is a girl, but I’ve occasionally seen it as a boy’s name.
I think [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] could easily work for girls :blue_heart:

Thank you!
I think since it’s a nickname, spelling doesn’t matter as much in terms of which gender it more aligns with. After all, they are both gender neutral names!

In the song Jessie’s [name_f]Girl[/name_f], [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] was a boy, so I don’t think [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] is the strictly female version, nor is [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] the strictly male version. I’ll have a think about it

both of them feel the same amount of neutral too me. I think i prefer [name_u]Jessie[/name_u]

I would assume [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] is a girl and [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] is a boy, but either could work! (I might be biased, though, since [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] is one of my top names for a boy.) I think historically the usage of Jessie/Jesse was a little more mixed. For a nickname, I don’t know how much the spelling matters; choose what you like best!
