[name_f]Jade[/name_f] is a pretty name but I generally associate it with being a little trashy just because of everyone I’ve ever met named [name_f]Jade[/name_f].
I like [name_f]Emerald[/name_f]. I think there are other jewels too that are useable as names? [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] are very popular on Nameberry especially in the birth announcements and celeb babies but if you don’t mind that, go for it
I love [name_f]Opal[/name_f], but I’ve never seen All My Children. I think [name_f]Opal[/name_f] is my favourite of the gem names. I also like [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], and [name_f]Emerald[/name_f]. [name_f]Beryl[/name_f] has grown on me lately, though I know several Beryls and they are all 70+ years old.
Personally, the only jewel name I really like is [name_f]Opal[/name_f] (although I don’t actively dislike any of them except perhaps [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f].) I don’t have the soap opera association, I just think of the character in Because of [name_u]Winn[/name_u] [name_f]Dixie[/name_f].
Other than [name_f]Coral[/name_f], my favourite mineral/gem names would be [name_f]Olivine[/name_f], Lazuli, Violane & Tashmarine. And Helmi, which is Finnish for pearl.
My middle name is [name_f]Jade[/name_f]… I appreciate that it’s different and I’m pretty sure that I’m not trashy, lol… Having said that, I probably wouldn’t use it in the first name spot…
Dislike:
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f] - Shrill nasal sound. PEAAAARLLLLL. Ugh. No.
[name_f]Beryl[/name_f] - Not the appealing kind of retro. [name_m]Just[/name_m] old and vaguely vicious-sounding.
[name_f]Cameo[/name_f] - My daughter, the bit part?
[name_f]Bijou[/name_f] - No. [name_m]Just[/name_m] no.
[name_f]Diamond[/name_f] - makes me think blood diamonds.
[name_f]Crystal[/name_f] - too “[name_u]Chris[/name_u]-ish” for my family, [name_f]Christine[/name_f] etc. wouldn’t go down well either.
Carnelian - Carnal? Anyway, don’t like. Sounds like an attempt to update [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m].
Nice, But Not [name_m]Wild[/name_m] About Them:
[name_f]Amber[/name_f] - Like the sound and warm gold colour, love the soft, tree-formed aspect, hate the '80s stripper feel so many people seem to get from this otherwise pretty name.
[name_f]Coral[/name_f] - Like the watery, nature aspect. Wish I didn’t picture a drab, solid, vaguely middle-aged and Midwestern type when I heard the name though.
[name_f]Amethyst[/name_f] - I loved this when I was 14. I probably would never use it in real life.
[name_f]Jade[/name_f] - Husband vetoed, said it’s incredibly trashy and he knows far too many. I have since met too many who spell it “[name_f]Jayde[/name_f]” which is even worse.
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] - Half pretty, but also just half kinda shrill. Very very popular here. Top Ten popular.
[name_f]Sapphire[/name_f] - I used to hate it. I’ve upgraded it to “nice” since I met a beautiful little girl named [name_f]Sapphire[/name_f] who improved my opinion of it. I still don’t like blue, and prefer the colour name [name_f]Saffron[/name_f].
Intrigues Me Greatly, [name_m]Worth[/name_m] Exploring
[name_f]Topaz[/name_f] - Beautiful stone. Like it as a middle name, but that “toe” syllable bothers me as a FN.
[name_f]Peridot[/name_f] - love it, but people saying the t will piss me off.
Iolite - It’s rather obscure, but I like it.
Really Really Like:
[name_f]Opal[/name_f] - Probably my favourite. Vintage sound, [name_f]Polly[/name_f] as a nickname, Australian gemstone (husband is Aussie and we’re staying here). [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t watch soaps, sorry.
[name_f]Emerald[/name_f] (a cool green)
Sardonyx - a bit of a guilty pleasure, but I like the sound for a boy.
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m] - Nice strong name for a boy.
[name_f]Jacinth[/name_f] - Like this for a girl, I think.
I’d rather be a [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], [name_f]Sapphire[/name_f], [name_f]Crystal[/name_f], [name_f]Emerald[/name_f], [name_f]Amethyst[/name_f] & [name_f]Jade[/name_f] than a [name_f]Beryl[/name_f], Carnelian, [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] & [name_f]Cameo[/name_f] etc.
Personally, I love using the “accent” of flowers & gems in names to dress-up a name…I guess it’s like adorning one’s dress or hair for a special occasion…in my opinion, gems & flowers can make a name “special”…well, for me at least…
I also love Iolite, Aquamarine, Moonstone, Marcasite/ Marquisette, [name_f]Peridot[/name_f], [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], Morganite, Tanzanite, [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], Citrine…
And I love crystals, they’re beautiful earthy gems & the name of that luxurious [name_m]French[/name_m] Champagne ([name_f]Cristal[/name_f])…so I don’t see the name [name_f]Crystal[/name_f]/ [name_f]Krystal[/name_f] as tacky at all…instead, I get an earthy, seaside-boho vibe or classic [name_m]French[/name_m] elegance…
I didn’t vote because I am yet to find a jewel name I like (yes even ruby and pearl ughk!). Sorry but I find most either tacky or ill-fitting for some reason.
Obviously, I love [name_f]Jade[/name_f] & [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] but on opposite genders than the norm. [name_f]Jade[/name_f] feels trashy for girls but strong for boys. I like [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] for both but it feels more beautiful and less lispy on a girl.
I love [name_f]Azure[/name_f] partly because of azurite, which is blue copper.
Obsidian, [name_f]Opal[/name_f], [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] and [name_u]Onyx[/name_u] are on my mn list because I love them but can’t make them work as first names
[name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_f]Copper[/name_f] but since [name_m]Fox[/name_m] is one of my top names I can’t use it (I loved [name_f]Copper[/name_f] & [name_m]Tod[/name_m] but not enough to name my children after them)
I went to school with a guy named Bronze. I’d never considered it for a name before but I love it now
I like [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] and Carnelian on your poll. [name_f]Cameo[/name_f] has that cool “o” sound. I wouldn’t call a child [name_f]Copper[/name_f] due to it being a slang word for policeman.
[name_f]Peridot[/name_f] would make a cool mn choice (eg. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Peridot[/name_f]). It’s pronounced like [name_f]Margot[/name_f] with a silent “t” (pair-ih-[name_f]DOE[/name_f])
