** I don’t want to offend anyone or start anything. I’m just looking for clarity.
My husband wants To use 2 J names (1st & middle) and use JJ as a nickname. What do you think of it??? My mother in law (who lives with us ) keeps saying its to ethnic or african american. We live in white suburbia. What do you all think about JJ? Now she’s got me second guessing our choice.
I like JJ! It’s spunky, easy to say, and catchy. I think of [name_f]Jelena[/name_f] Jankovic, the Serbian tennis player who the press affectionately calls JJ after her initials (though I don’t think she calls herself that). So no, I don’t find it ethnic or African-American.
I don’t find AJ/JJ/JT/AW/[name_m]JR[/name_m] etc. particularly ethnic, but I’ve been told it’s rather “American.” (I’m a Yank who emigrated to Australia). I’ve heard it on plenty of white suburban guys as well as hardcore rednecks from the backwoods, inner-city Jewish guys, and black guys, so I don’t think of it as a particular niche thing. Though what names are being abbreviated does vary with subculture.
I like JJ fine. But I’m biased, I have AJ on my own list.
I don’t care for it that much as a nickname (no offense, just my taste), but I certainly don’t find it stereotypically ethnic. I have a friend who was adopted from Poland, and she and her (white) American husband named their first boy [name_m]Jeremiah[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] and call him JJ.
It doesn’t have any ethnic connotations of any sort to me but I live in the UK so don’t know if that makes a difference. I knew a JJ at school (white Scottish); he was a bit of an arrogant tw*t, though, so I have negative feelings towards the name.
I don’t think it sounds ethnic or African American. I think of JJ Abrams and a (Caucasian) character on the TV show American Dreams that ran awhile ago. I think it is cute for a little boy, and will age well into his 20s. He can always use his full name when he gets older.
There’s a local professional basketball player here in the Philippines named JJ Helterbrand, I just know lately that he’s real firstname is [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] [name_m]Johnson[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u]. I think JJ is pretty cool as a nickname;-)
I quite like JJ, the little boy who used to live next door to me was a JJ and he was from [name_f]England[/name_f]. I think it was short for [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Junior[/name_m].
What?! I have never in my life heard that. The one JJ I knew was Latino and came from a pretty well-to-do family. He got JJ from his FN and LN, though. I’m not a huge fan of it, I admit, but it sort of seems like a waste to pick out two lovely names and then just minimize all that thought and love and creativity into just two letters! [name_u]Everett[/name_u] [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] is my second favorite boys’ name, and I even like EJ, but I don’t think I’d ever call him that if I ever had a son with that name–I just think [name_u]Everett[/name_u] and [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] are way too handsome to do that!
I do like JJ alliteration, though–I’ve considered both [name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_m]Julian[/name_m] and [name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_m]Josiah[/name_m] in the past (and still adore both!)–but if it was me, I wouldn’t use the nn. [name_m]Just[/name_m] because I’m not a huge fan. If you like JJ, though, use it! To me, it’s always come across as a cop out (oh, I won’t have to think about it that much; I’ll just call him JJ! What are two “J” names? [name_m]Justin[/name_m] and [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]? Okay, that’s it!). And I’m sure that’s not the thought process here (or in most cases!), but I’d much rather go by a beautiful full name than two initials. Then again, I am in love with the art of naming–I would love to go through that whole process. [name_m]Just[/name_m] going for a set of initials seems to circumvent that entirely. But if you really love the full name, and you love JJ, go for it. Why not? JJ’s cute. I didn’t used to think so, but the several people I’ve known with _J nns (JJ, EJ, KJ, etc.) all wear them really well and make them fun. If you love it, by all means, use it. Out of curiosity, what are the two "J"s?
Our neighbour is nicknamed JJ. His name is [name_m]John[/name_m] (surname starts with J). His sons are JJ too - [name_m]Jaxon[/name_m] and [name_u]Jayden[/name_u]. Although his youngest son is [name_u]Dylan[/name_u].
