Jonah? Jonas?

all of a sudden I am liking the name [name]Jonah[/name]. When I brought it up to my husband his response was “its way too jewish” we ARENT jewish, so apparently it doesn’t appeal to him. I see it as a biblical name, which i don’t think is bad or good - it just is. what do you guys think? is it silly to name a little boy jonah if you’re not jewish?!

i also don’t mind the greek variation, [name]Jonas[/name] - but then i think of the [name]Jonas[/name] brothers! i don’t think thats a huge issue, as i already think their popularity is declining, and most likely wont even be a factor in a year or so. but if you met a little boy named [name]Jonas[/name] would you immediately think or ask “ohh like the jonas brothers?” although it would be foolish to think my husband and I would name a child after them, I wonder what people would think.

Thanks!

I don’t care for [name]Jonah[/name], as it makes me think automatically, “and the whale.” [name]Ah[/name], too much Bible class! but I do have a young cousin named [name]Jonah[/name], and they are [name]Christian[/name]. I vastly prefer [name]Jonas[/name], and I do NOT think of the [name]Jonas[/name] bros, but now you say that, I’m wondering too if everyone would ask you that! I think of the cool Weezer song, My Name Is [name]Jonas[/name].

I’m Jewish, and I’ll say that all the [name]Jonahs[/name] I know who are over 20 years old are also Jewish… but it has become trendy and mainstream for non-Jewish babies. I mean, with babies its more of a fifty-fifty split. Rather like [name]Asher[/name] and [name]Reuben[/name], I used to only hear them on Jews, now I run into plenty who aren’t. They’re too popular to only be being used by Jews, there aren’t enough Jews to shove the stats that high.

I don’t like [name]Jonas[/name] but I do think of the [name]Jonas[/name] brothers, also am sensitive to issues of [name]Judas[/name]-teasing… which may be less of an issue for a non-Jewish boy anyway.

[name]Jonah[/name] is on my list, and I’ve never thought of it as a “Jewish” name. The first [name]Jonah[/name] that pops to my mind is not, so far as I know, Jewish. In fact, he has an Irish surname (which, I know doesn’t mean anything, but I’m pretty sure he’s not Jewish).

I prefer [name]Jonah[/name] and I think it is fine if you aren’t Jewish.

In the U.S. a lot Evangelicals/nondenominational Christians use plenty of Old Testament names like [name]Elijah[/name], [name]Joshua[/name], [name]Caleb[/name] and [name]Isaac[/name], so I think [name]Jonah[/name] is fine for a non-Jewish person.

[name]Love[/name] [name]Jonah[/name]! I would definitely recommend not using [name]Jonas[/name]…despite the fact that I think it has a cool sound with potential. Unfortunately the [name]Jonas[/name] brothers definitely ruined this one!

I don’t think [name]Jonah[/name] is too Jewish, nor do I think [name]Jonas[/name] has been ruined by the [name]Jonas[/name] Brothers. The [name]Jonas[/name] Brothers are old news and no longer popular, and any name in the Old Testament is a valid choice for Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike.

[name]Both[/name] are great names!

Thanks everyone for you input! much appreciated.

my husband grew up in catholic schools, so i think hes “bibled out” haha so he tends to shoot down these sort of names, but i still like it. urgh! thanks!

anyone else?

i’m Jewish and don’t see it as any different than [name]Eli[/name] or [name]Asher[/name] or [name]Caleb[/name] being so popular now; it’s very anglicized, and its been used by non-Jews for ages. the main character in The Giver is [name]Jonas[/name] (that’s what i think of first when i hear the name), and that form is definitely less “Jewish sounding” than [name]Jonah[/name]. i’d think it was weird if you wanted to call him [name]Yonah[/name], which is the Hebrew form - i’ve never met anyone who wasnt Jewish who said it that way.

I always think of Weezer when I hear [name]Jonas[/name], and I love the connection. <3 I don’t think of the Jonas Brothers at all. Jonas is awesome.
I also like Jonah but to a lesser extent.

I love [name]Jonas[/name]/[name]Jonah[/name]! I do prefer [name]Jonas[/name] to [name]Jonah[/name], but both are lovely. I think the [name]Jonas[/name] Brothers are pretty much dead, haha, I loved [name]Jonas[/name] during the [name]Jonas[/name] Brothers’ heyday, but I think it’s a non-issue these days. It’s so handsome!

If the Biblical association is anywhere from neutral to negative to you, I think [name]Jonas[/name] would be a better option–it feels less associated to the Bible and the story of [name]Jonah[/name] and the whale/big fish. Although personally, that’s half of the appeal for me!

Good luck!

thanks everyone!
