In all the talk on unisex names I recently thought of [name]Jonah[/name] (anyone else?) I love the sound and [name]Joan[/name] has allways been on my list, but it there another variation? At first I thought [name]Joana[/name] would work but she would constantly be called joannah. I like [name]Joani[/name], but [name]Jonah[/name] is still better [name]IMO[/name]. so, berries, my question is, is there any other joan sounding variation to [name]Jonah[/name]? sorry if that’s confusing!
For a girl I would spell it [name]Jona[/name].
Hmm, you’re right that [name]Joana[/name] would get [name]Joanna[/name] all the time.
Maybe [name]Jona[/name]? Like [name]Joni[/name] with an -a?
[name]Will[/name] keep thinking.
[name]Jonah[/name] is a boys’ name. [name]How[/name] many times are we going to have this conversation on Nameberry? Seriously? [name]Just[/name] look back through the boards and find all the posts asking if X boys’ name would work on a girl, replace X boy’s name with ‘[name]Jonah[/name]’ (or whatever other boy’s name), and read the comments.
I love just plain [name]Joan[/name] so much! I think [name]Joanie[/name] or [name]Joana[/name] ([name]Joe[/name]-nuh) could be nice nicknames. [name]Joana[/name] on paper would def get [name]Joanna[/name], but [name]Jonah[/name] is all boy to me and [name]Jona[/name] I would say [name]John[/name]- uh. Really I think [name]Jonah[/name] is so familiar & classic it would be like using. [name]Lukas[/name]…sounds like [name]Louise[/name] & [name]Alice[/name] but that doesn’t necessarily make you think ‘girl’ when you see/hear it.
I think [name]Joan[/name] is so simple, lovely, strong & rare…saintly yet rock-and-roll and so good you don’t need to borrow from the boys.
I really love [name]Jonah[/name] on a girl. It reminds me of [name]Juneau[/name].
I think that was a little uncalled for. [name]Every[/name] name is different. [name]Just[/name] because you disagree with unisex names doesn’t mean everyone does for every single specific name. If you don’t agree with something so strongly, don’t respond.
i ditto the “[name]Jona[/name]” spelling.
[name]Jonah[/name] isn’t unisex, it’s a boy’s name, it’s a biblical name. He was the guy swallowed by the whale.
I think for a girl I wouldn’t because as mentioned, it is a boy’s names.
What about:
[name]Joanie[/name]
[name]Jonette[/name]
[name]Jonee[/name]
[name]Joani[/name]
Or even something close like:
[name]Jodi[/name]
[name]Jody[/name]
[name]Jodie[/name]
[name]Josie[/name]
[name]Jolie[/name]
[name]Joelle[/name]
[name]Jolene[/name]
[name]Jovie[/name]
[name]Joanne[/name]
Well, since you seem to be asking for names that sound like [name]Jonah[/name] or are female variants of [name]Jonah[/name] and not necessarily if [name]Jonah[/name] is goo don a girl, I’ll try to help. I do think [name]Joana[/name] would be the best girl version but I would pronounce it jo-ah-na like that.
how about:
Joandra is sort of similar
[name]Joani[/name]/[name]Joanie[/name] is cute
[name]Joanna[/name]/[name]Joana[/name] – on the site I’m looking on, it says this could be pronounced joe-nah so you could get what you’d like with some force
[name]Jona[/name] – i would pronounce this right with minimal prodding
[name]Jonell[/name] is similar
[name]Jonette[/name] is similar
Jonina is close and means the same thing
[name]Yona[/name] – is the female form of [name]Jonah[/name]
I really, really dislike [name]Jonah[/name] for a girl. [name]Just[/name] because a name ends in an “a” sound doesn’t mean it’s good for a girl. I think [name]Joan[/name], [name]Joana[/name], [name]Johanna[/name], and [name]Joanna[/name] are all good alternatives.
I think just cutting off the H at the end doesn’t change the fact that this name is originally for a male. If you are going to cross over, you might as well go all the way. It’s like this couple I know who named his daughter [name]Rhyan[/name], pronounced like [name]Ryan[/name]. That’s cute, but looks cheesey to me with that spelling. If you really want to name her [name]Ryan[/name], just name her [name]Ryan[/name]. Unless, of course, an alternate version of the name you love already exists, such as is the case with [name]Bronwen[/name] and [name]Bronwyn[/name].
Either way I prefer the [name]Jonah[/name] spelling.
I really really dislike [name]Jonah[/name] on a girl. Granted, [name]Jonah[/name] is one of my favorite names for a boy and I only think of it as a boy’s name. I’d really hate for it to become a girl’s name, ughhh.
Plus, it’s been mentioned before, but I think there’ll be spelling issues with this name. What about [name]Johanna[/name] or [name]Joan[/name] if you really like [name]Joan[/name].
This is pretty funny. Usually I’m really not into unisex names, and they’re very uncommon in Hebrew. But [name]Yonah[/name] (the Hebrew form of [name]Jonah[/name]) is one of very few names I know of that is occasionally used on girls as well as boys in Jewish communities - probably because the name is also a word, and one that is grammatically feminine. It’s MUCH more common on boys though, girls tend to be called a feminized version like Yonit or [name]Yonina[/name]. But people aren’t likely to express much shock over a girl named [name]Yona[/name], when they would over other typically male names being used in that way.
That being said, I do think you’re better off not using [name]Jonah[/name] for a girl, and finding an alternative that results in the nn you want (which is supercute, btw). Ironically, in your cultural context, [name]Jonah[/name] really is male. [name]Jona[/name] seems to be an Icelandic feminine version of [name]John[/name], if that works for you. [name]Jonie[/name] might be a good spelling to use.
