Jonathan, nickname John...weird?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] Berries,

So the only name DH and I both like at this point is [name_m]John[/name_m]/[name_m]Johnny[/name_m] for baby #2.

However, DH loves the idea of having a longer name with a nickname, so he really wants to use the name [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] as his formal name, but would go by [name_m]John[/name_m]/[name_m]Johnny[/name_m] in everyday life (DH thinks its fine, since he has a name like [name_m]Timothy[/name_m]: its on official records, but his whole life he’s only been called [name_m]Tim[/name_m] at school, work, etc.)

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think this works? I could call him [name_m]Jon[/name_m], but don’t like it nearly as much (I know it’s only 1 letter different, am I being crazy?)

What are your favorite traditional boys names that have a longer version + nickname? I’ve already vetoed [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]/[name_m]Andrew[/name_m], DH vetoed [name_m]Samuel[/name_m]/[name_m]Thomas[/name_m]/[name_m]William[/name_m].

I see nothing wrong with using [name_m]John[/name_m] instead of [name_m]Jon[/name_m] as a nickname for [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m]. I personally prefer [name_m]John[/name_m] over [name_m]Jon[/name_m] myself. Actually I prefer [name_m]John[/name_m] over [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m].

I know two [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m]/Jonathons who go by [name_m]Jon[/name_m]. I think I’ve also seen a [name_m]Johnathon[/name_m] somewhere, if that fixes the h problem. I would think it was a little weird to add the H in if you didn’t use that spelling.

But now that I’m thinking about it, what about people named [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] nicknamed [name_m]Tom[/name_m]? They’re removing an H there, so I guess it wouldn’t be that weird for you to add one in. Especially if he’s going to go by [name_m]John[/name_m] most of the time.

[name_m]Favorite[/name_m] Traditional boy names off the top of my head:
[name_m]Walter[/name_m] - [name_m]Walt[/name_m]

I’m blanking… I would guess that most of the names I like wouldn’t fall into the category, sorry!

I don’t think it’s weird at all. In fact, nearly every [name_m]John[/name_m] I’ve known is a [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m], not a [name_m]Johnathan[/name_m]. I only know one [name_m]Jon[/name_m].

I do not like [name_m]Jonathon[/name_m] personally, maybe it’s just my… bad association, because I used to like it a lot more with one of my favorite shows Property Brothers! You’re not being crazy though, [name_m]John[/name_m] looks way better than [name_m]Jon[/name_m]. Jonathon nicknamed John has always been weird for me adding a letter, but it’s done a lot so maybe I’m just being silly. Jon gives me a futuristic vibe, while John is more classical.

If you only want him being called [name_m]John[/name_m]/[name_m]Johnny[/name_m], you might not want to go for [name_m]Jonathon[/name_m] as he may wind up being called [name_m]Nathan[/name_m] instead! I would say go for [name_m]John[/name_m] if you like it better; Not for [name_m]Jonathon[/name_m] simply because it is longer. Good luck!

And [name_m]Johnathon[/name_m] with an H is a total no for me…

My brother is [name_m]Johnathan[/name_m] and goes by [name_m]John[/name_m]. I like the spelling with an h better.

People add and subtract letters to nicknames all the time. I see no problem with it. In fact, [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] does contain an “h”, just not in the order you’re using it. I think [name_m]John[/name_m]/[name_m]Johnny[/name_m] totally works with the full name [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m]. Go for it!

[name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] nn [name_m]John[/name_m] is fine. [name_m]John[/name_m] and [name_m]Jon[/name_m] are pronounced the same, so it’s no big deal.

Personally, I’ve only met one [name_m]John[/name_m] who didn’t have the full name of [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m]/[name_m]Jonathan[/name_m]. I think it’s pretty normal.

It’s perfectly normak

Other traditional options:

[name_m]Alexander[/name_m] - [name_u]Alex[/name_u], [name_m]Zander[/name_m], [name_m]Xander[/name_m]
[name_m]Charles[/name_m] - [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_m]Chuck[/name_m], [name_m]Chad[/name_m], [name_m]Chip[/name_m]
[name_m]Clayton[/name_m] - [name_m]Clay[/name_m]
[name_m]David[/name_m] - [name_m]Dave[/name_m], [name_m]Davey[/name_m]
[name_m]Edward[/name_m] - [name_m]Ed[/name_m], [name_m]Eddie[/name_m], [name_m]Ted[/name_m], [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] (although that is weird for me)
[name_m]Matthew[/name_m] - [name_m]Matt[/name_m], [name_u]Mattie[/name_u]
[name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] - [name_u]Max[/name_u]
[name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] - [name_u]Nick[/name_u], [name_u]Nicky[/name_u], [name_m]Cole[/name_m]
[name_m]Robert[/name_m] - [name_m]Rob[/name_m], [name_u]Robby[/name_u], [name_u]Bobby[/name_u], [name_u]Bert[/name_u]

I prefer just [name_m]John[/name_m] over [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though I think it’s weird to use [name_m]John[/name_m] as a nn for [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m]…I really hate the spelling [name_m]Jon[/name_m].
