Josephine: Would Effie or Phina work as a nickname?

I love the name [name]Josephine[/name], but I’m not crazy about the nickname [name]Josie[/name]. I love [name]Posy[/name], but I think it’s too out there. [name]Do[/name] you think [name]Effie[/name] would work as a nickname? What about Phina?

I think Phina works great! My son is a [name]Joseph[/name] ususally [name]Joe[/name] but sometimes at home he’s called Seffy. We HATE the nn [name]Joey[/name]! I don’t see why [name]Effie[/name] wouldn’t work when Seffy does.

I love [name]Effie[/name] as a NN for [name]Josephine[/name]

Definitely Phina or [name]Fee[/name] (which I’m partial to) would work really great! [name]Effie[/name]'s a bit of a stretch, but if it feels natural to you, I’d go with it. I have trouble deciding on nns before the child is born because for me it’s more about what feels natural or happens naturally. Nicknames are so personal; I really think it’s just about what you want to nickname her. [name]Josephine[/name] is beautiful.

Personally I think it’s fine for nicknames - especially family nicknames - to be a stretch. I think [name]Effie[/name] and Phina both work wonderfully as nicknames for [name]Josephine[/name]. Phina is a perfectly natural nickname to come to, and if [name]Effie[/name] can be a nickname for [name]Elizabeth[/name] then it definitely can for [name]Josephine[/name], though if you’d intend to it to be used throughout her life the spelling [name]Ephie[/name] could make it more palatable.

[name]Effie[/name] is really cute, but I prefer [name]Effy[/name] just because I pronounce [name]Effie[/name] as EE-fee and [name]Effy[/name] as ef-ee.

I like [name]Effie[/name] and don’t find it a stretch at all. Phina is cute but doesn’t seem like I nn - I would want to call a Phina, [name]Fee[/name] or [name]FiFi[/name] for some reason.

I think Phina works, and [name]Effie[/name] could work, too. If [name]Effie[/name] doesn’t seem to flow as well from the name for you, what about Sephie? (or however you’d like to spell that)

[name]Effie[/name] is absolutely a viable nickname for [name]Josephine[/name]. I just wrote about this in another post about [name]Josephine[/name]! I love the name [name]Effie[/name] but have trouble with a middle name ([name]Effie[/name] [name]Diane[/name] is the only combo I could think up) so I started looking for other names that yielded [name]Effie[/name] as a nickname. [name]Persephone[/name], [name]Josephine[/name] and [name]Stephanie[/name] are the only ones I could think of.

I think [name]Effie[/name] is cuter but both definitely work.

I prefer [name]Josie[/name] but both [name]Effie[/name] and Phina work as a nickname for [name]Josephine[/name].

My mother’s name is [name]Josephina[/name], and she’s always gone by Fietje ([name]Fee[/name]-cha). She’s Dutch, and that’s the nickname they use for this name in [name]Holland[/name]. Her sisters would also call her Fie.

[name]Josephine[/name] is lovely - so classic and elegant, but not overused and not at all stuffy like some classic names! I agree with a previous poster who said “whatever feels natural”! I think a nickname would develop naturally for your little [name]Josephine[/name]. [name]Effie[/name] is cute, Phina is sweet but a bit more sophisticated - and what about Josa ([name]Joe[/name]-sa)? Doesn’t look great spelled out like that, but I think it sounds nice and takes you away from the [name]Josie[/name] that you don’t like.

[name]Effie[/name] and Phina are both great as nicknames for [name]Josephine[/name].
