[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone!
I’ve loved [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] “Josie” for a very long time - but with this, I would practically exclusively call her [name_u]Josie[/name_u].
I’ve been considering one and two syllable names recently (e.g. [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_u]Rose[/name_u], [name_f]Faith[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Belle[/name_f], [name_f]Betty[/name_f] etc.) that you can’t particularly shorten, and I think [name_u]Josie[/name_u] fits in better with them than [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] does.
I’m just worried, is [name_u]Josie[/name_u] substantial enough to stand alone? [name_u]Or[/name_u] would going for the full [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and calling her [name_u]Josie[/name_u] be a better option? (Also, I don’t like the nickname [name_u]Jo[/name_u] and I’m worried [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] being shortened to [name_u]Jo[/name_u] or Joey)
Would love to hear your thoughts.
Thank you!
Side note: [name_u]Josie[/name_u] works better with the middle name I have to use than [name_f]Josephine[/name_f].
Yes, [name_u]Josie[/name_u] is definitely substantial enough to stand on its own! It’s just outside of the top 100 on the SSA list, so clearly many other parents think so as well. I’ve known “standalone” Josies ranging in age from mid-30s to <5 and it seems like a name that ages well.
I would kind of compare it to names like [name_f]Katie[/name_f], [name_u]Abby[/name_u], [name_u]Allie[/name_u], [name_u]Angie[/name_u], Tori… the “full name” version may be more common but the “nickname” version works just as well as a standalone and doesn’t raise any eyebrows or seem too juvenile.
[name_u]Josie[/name_u] stands perfectly well on it’s own. Warm and sweet, with strength and solidness too. I do think that since it’s a nicknamey-name already, [name_u]Joey[/name_u] and possibly [name_u]Jo[/name_u] would be less likely.
It took me years growing up before I even connected that [name_u]Josie[/name_u] was a nickname for [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] because of the two I knew one was a just [name_u]Josie[/name_u] and the other went so exclusively by [name_u]Josie[/name_u] that I never actually heard she had a full name, so yeah I totally think [name_u]Josie[/name_u] works on its own and I really like it.
[name_u]Josie[/name_u] is cute and spunky but still has a strength to it. She can stand on her own just fine. I know two little girls named [name_u]Josie[/name_u], just [name_u]Josie[/name_u] - and it works perfectly fine.
