I’d just like some general opinions/thoughts on this name. I ran across it the other day, and I kind of jokingly mentioned it to my husband and he got all excited and geeky (huge [name]Joss[/name] Whedon fan…) so now I guess I am considering it as a middle name if we have a boy. Maybe a first? Hmm…
[name]Joss[/name] seems feminine to me a la joss stone or as a nn for [name]Jocelyn[/name], then again, you already have a [name]Rowan[/name] which is gender neutral. [name]Joss[/name] could definitely get confused for josh however, I do think it would work in the middle spot. But I’m really unsure about it, I just hear [name]Jocelyn[/name].
love it, and definitely on a boy!
for what it’s worth, [name]Jocelyn[/name] started out as a male name, but i don’t automatically think “nn for girl name” when i hear [name]Joss[/name] anyway - i think it has a blunt (in a good way) kind of masculine quality as is. a little medieval, which always appeals to me.
for some reason, I just see it as [name]Josh[/name] I’m wondering if others might have the same problem of thinking it’s [name]Josh[/name] when they first hear it instead of [name]Joss[/name] like [name]Moss[/name].
I think [name]Joss[/name] would work in the first or middle name spot. I agree with @spring13. I think it is a nice, blunt, masculine name. My only concern would be everyone knowing I named my son after [name]Joss[/name] Whedon. It seems more permissible in the mn spot in that case. I don’t know how you feel about it, but I wouldn’t like the constant comments about how I must be a really big fan.
But hey, at least your husband is a reasonable [name]Joss[/name] Whedon fan. Mine suggested that we name our son [name]Captain[/name] Hammer (jokingly, I think… I hope).
I see it for girls, too, despite [name]Joss[/name] Whedon. I love [name]Jocelyn[/name] nn [name]Joss[/name], so it seems very feminine to me. I’ve heard of [name]Joseph[/name] nn [name]Joss[/name], though, so I suppose that could be nice. And I do think it’d be a nice mn for a boy.
I got so excited when I saw this thread, haha, for some reason I thought it was on the girls’ forum and I thought [name]Rowan[/name] and [name]Jocelyn[/name]/[name]Joss[/name] would be so adorable for sisters. But I do think [name]Asher[/name] [name]Joss[/name] or something would be pretty cool for you guys, as well.
I really like it! [name]Joss[/name] just seems like a cool slightly rocker type name.
I like it a lot. It has the same vibe as some of my favorite nicknames like [name]Cy[/name] and [name]Des[/name], yet it sounds like a full name.
I found a [name]Joss[/name] waaay, waaaay back in my genealogy… It sounds so fresh considering how old the name really is.
He doesn’t really push any name, but if I suggested something like [name]Oz[/name] I bet he wouldn’t protest. It would most likely be in the middle name spot because it’s 1 syllable and starts with a J. Like [name]Jane[/name].
