Junior or not

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] guys.

I have been considering naming my future child (when i have a boy ) after my dad who passed away. I have no brothers so there currently isn’t a junior in the family. So my question is can naming your child a [name_m]Junior[/name_m] skip a generation? Or would it be strange to do that?

Let me know what you guys think!

I think that the only way to have a true [name_m]Junior[/name_m] is for the parent to name the child after himself/herself…I don’t think it counts as a true [name_m]Junior[/name_m] if it skips a generation. Also, if your child has a different surname than his late grandpa, then it wouldn’t be a true junior anyway.

That being said, there’s no reason why you couldn’t use any of his names for your child! It’s a really sweet gesture! [name_m]Just[/name_m] because it wouldn’t really be a junior doesn’t make it any less meaningful! I wouldn’t find it strange in the least…people use honor names all the time.

I’m with [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f]–I don’t think he’d technically be a junior, but I’ve heard that if a boy is given his father’s name exactly (FN, MN, LN), then he’s a junior, but if a FN/MN combo is passed down from farther back in a family tree (like, say, a grandpa), then he’d technically be a II (like [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], II, as opposed to [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], [name_m]Jr[/name_m].). My dad is a II, but I think it was only because my grandmother didn’t like the idea of having a junior. That might be an option to consider, as well? There’s certainly no reason why you couldn’t use your father’s name, and the gesture is so sweet.

Good luck!

He wouldn’t technically be a junior…the last name would be different. There is no reason you can’t use your fathers name, he just wouldn’t need [name_m]Junior[/name_m] at the end.
