Juno - still pregnant teen or can we go back to the mythological aspect?

Hubby loves the name [name_f]Juno[/name_f] - he loves old mythological names with history, and feels the [name_f]Juno[/name_f] beach reference is empowering. He’s a war buff.
I’m concerned that the first connotation with the name is the pregnant teen.
What are your thoughts? Can we move past the sarcastic teen?

Thanks!

I think it’s wayyyy beyond the movie. No one will remember the movie in another ten years anyway!

I like [name_f]Juno[/name_f] in all it’s forms: [name_f]Juna[/name_f], [name_f]Junia[/name_f], [name_m]Junius[/name_m], [name_f]Juni[/name_f], [name_u]Juniper[/name_u], [name_u]June[/name_u]…

I also think there are some other very usable but underused mythological names out there: [name_f]Galatea[/name_f], [name_f]Elara[/name_f], [name_f]Hera[/name_f] to name just three.

I think [name_f]Juno[/name_f] has moved past the pregnant teen connection

I love [name_f]Juno[/name_f], definitely dont worry about the movie

I’ve never seen the film, but am of course aware of it.

My two year old is named [name_f]Juno[/name_f], and I get “like the movie?!” about 80% of the time when I introduce her to anyone under 40.
People are predictable and boring. [name_f]DO[/name_f] YOU REALLY THINK I NAMED MY FIRSTBORN CHILD AFTER A FICTIONAL, UNDERAGE, PREGNANT HIPSTER? CONSIDER YOUR QUESTION.

I’ve told a few people that I plan on naming the daughter I’m currently gestating [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], and the same demographic usually replies, “oh, like Friends?!”

If they mean “like” as in LITERALLY THE SAME NAME, then yes. But if they mean to ask whether I’m naming her AFTER the sitcom character, well… usually my expression and tone convey my disdain for their moronic inquiry.

I’m not about to forgo using two lovely, established names on account of a bunch of imbeciles whose cultural knowledge doesn’t extend beyond 21st Century television and film.

I do still think pregnant teen (never saw the movie), but maybe that’s just because my mil saw it and talked about it for six months solid. I agree with pp that no one will remember it in ten years though.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_f]Clio[/name_f]? In mythology [name_f]Clio[/name_f] is the greek muse of history. Your husband might like that

I HATE HATE HATE the question “Oh, you mean like [fill in the blank]?” [name_f]Do[/name_f] people really need a tv/movie/pop culture reference to understand what name I just said?!? [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]. Not like the tv character. Like my daughter’s name.

I really do think alot of people choose names based on these sort of references though. I know more than one kid named [name_m]Jaxon[/name_m] so they could go by [name_m]Jax[/name_m] after some character on sons of anarchy. There’s not enough side eye in the world for me to cope with that.

This. So true.

I love the name [name_f]Juno[/name_f] and would use it regardless.

Mythological hero! I think of the movie character as ‘[name_f]Ellen[/name_f] [name_f]Paige[/name_f]’. She’s such a distinctive actress, I seldom distinguish her from her characters.

I am in love with both the name and the movie, and I don’t even make the connection any more. The film is great but it’s not hyped about any more so I wouldn’t worry.

@krankenschwester [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] and [name_f]Juno[/name_f] are perfection together!

It’s all pregnant teenager to me still, and I never even saw the movie. That’s why I’m not a fan of the name.

I quite like the movie [name_f]Juno[/name_f] (might be because I’m a bit in love with [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] [name_u]Page[/name_u] - who knows), and it’s still one of my favourite names. But yeah, I think in a few years the connotations with the movie will be shaken off.

I also only associate it with the movie even though I never saw it and knew about the mythology long before. You shouldn’t let that totally dissuade you, but people are going to make that connection and might even ask you about it, as someone said people do about her daughter. The movie came out almost a decade ago and I’m still seeing crap about it pretty frequently, good bet it’ll still be popular in another decade. If that bothers you, I’d look for a different name.

Still pregnant teen

Back before I knew anything about mythology, the movie [name_f]Juno[/name_f] is actually what made me like the name. It’s so cute and unusual, without being too out there. That was back in late middle school/early high school for me, so it’s been quite some time.

So I say even if it does still have associations with the movie, if the “So like the movie?” question is the worst you get, then that’s not the worst thing to ever happen. No matter what you name your kid, there’s going to be something in this world other people can associate it with. It’d be a shame to neglect such a pretty name simply because one movie painted it distastefully.

I think [name_f]Juno[/name_f] is spunky and gorgeous and I don’t think the movie takes away from its charm.

I completely am in love with the name [name_f]Juno[/name_f]! Personally, I would probably use the name [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] and call her [name_f]Juno[/name_f].
I do think of the movie a bit, but honestly that doesn’t bother me since I love the movie. I do agree that as the movie gets older this association will be much less.
Really, so many names can be found in movies or books and I just don’t see it as a reason to not use the name. Plus, there is always the chance of naming a baby and having a huge popular movie come out a few years later with a character of that name (think of all the [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]'s who were named before Frozen).

@bedhead - Thank you! [name_f]Juno[/name_f]'s a tough act to follow, but I think we’ve found the right name with [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f].

Funny, but [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] [name_u]Page[/name_u]'s mum was my [name_m]French[/name_m] teacher in grade six, back when [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] herself was just a little girl of five. Who knew!

Very cute name, but the reality is people are going to associate it with the movie. I guess the decision is whether that bothers you enough not to use it. For some reason, when some people hear a name, their natural instinct is to associate it with someone in pop culture.
