Just Abby/Abbie?

I’ve been contemplating the name [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] for quite a while, but it never quite feels right. I do however, adore [name_u]Abby[/name_u]/Abbie (I think I prefer [name_u]Abbie[/name_u] though?) and don’t seem to LOVE any full names for her.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_u]Abbie[/name_u] (or [name_u]Abby[/name_u]) could work as a name in their own right? Is it better as a hyphenated option, like [name_u]Abbie[/name_u]-[name_u]Louise[/name_u] or [name_u]Abbie[/name_u]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f]?

Thank you!

Abbie could work- especially in the UK where nn’s as full names- eg [name_u]Theo[/name_u], [name_m]Albie[/name_m], [name_u]Kit[/name_u], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]- are high on the charts. [name_f]My[/name_f] baby due in [name_u]November[/name_u] will be called [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] if it’s a boy. I love the name [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] but don’t like [name_m]Albert[/name_m] and don’t love [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] so thought why not?

I think it could work! I love the name but agree with you that [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] isn’t my favorite (it’s a nice name too though!). In theory I like both spellings, but for some reason [name_u]Abby[/name_u] looks more complete to me as a full name (maybe just because it has more usage in the U.S. on the birth certificate–top 500 vs. out of the top 1000). I think I would be more surprised to learn that [name_u]Abbie[/name_u] was a full name compared to [name_u]Abby[/name_u], although that could totally just be my perception. I would like it best as a single name (as opposed to a hyphenated double) with a really solid middle name. [name_u]Abby[/name_u] [name_u]Louise[/name_u] Lastname, for example, would be perfect!

@sarahjane1 - I love [name_u]Alfie[/name_u]! [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] choice!! And thank you! We live in [name_f]Canada[/name_f], but I do know a few Maisies, Rosies, Effies and Nellies, so I guess it could work! I think only one has a full name on her birth certificate ([name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] nn [name_f]Nellie[/name_f]).

@dandy_orchid - I do like [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], but it just doesn’t feel right for me, I guess? I do really like [name_u]Abby[/name_u]/Abbie [name_u]Louise[/name_u] as a name in itself!

You know, I actually know a little girl whose name is [name_u]Abby[/name_u] - just [name_u]Abby[/name_u]. Her mom has explained that she just really liked [name_u]Abby[/name_u], so they decided to not worry about the formal name at all. And, honestly, I think it works fine. It ages well, and most Abigails go exclusively by [name_u]Abby[/name_u] anyway, so…why not?

Oh, and [name_u]Abby[/name_u] [name_u]Louise[/name_u] is adorable! (I know a different [name_u]Abby[/name_u] whose middle name is [name_u]Louise[/name_u], and I’ve always felt the names pair so well together. Though this [name_u]Abby[/name_u] is an [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] in full.)

[name_u]Abbie[/name_u]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f] is such an adorable double barrel! I don’t see why [name_u]Abbie[/name_u] couldn’t work on its own!

Abbie totally works on it’s own. It feels well established and usable as a name

They work on their own also it’s nice to have a formal name. [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] is my name and 99% of the time I go by [name_u]Abi[/name_u]. Some people don’t even realize [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] is my name lol. But I like to put [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] on more formal papers etc and my parents only call me [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], some other family members call me both [name_u]Abi[/name_u] and [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]. Everyone else, friends, teachers, even my bosses all call me [name_u]Abi[/name_u]. It’s just nice to have flexibility.

Abby/Abbie can definitely work just on its own. If we can use [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], [name_f]Libby[/name_f], etc as stand alone names, why not [name_u]Abby[/name_u]/Abbie? You could hyphenate it if you wanted, but I don’t think it’s necessary.

Most Abbys I know are just Abbys so it would definitely work. I prefer it to [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] too!

I have to declare bias! I simply love [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] in it’s long form so it’s hard for me to step outside of myself and provide an objective opinion! I’m so passionate about this name.

In saying this, I agree, I too prefer [name_u]Abbie[/name_u] to [name_u]Abby[/name_u]!

I went to school with a girl called [name_u]Abbie[/name_u] and I cant remember anyone thinking it was just a nickname, so if you like it use it!

I think [name_u]Abbie[/name_u] could work well as a name on its own.

Thank you again, everyone! :sparkling_heart:

@mrs.tilbury - I do like [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], it’s a lovely name, but it just doesn’t quite fit, if that makes any sense? I think [name_u]Abbie[/name_u] is a bit more me :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes! I think [name_u]Abby[/name_u] and [name_u]Abbie[/name_u] are just fine on their own. If you don’t like [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], but you do like [name_u]Abby[/name_u]/Abbie, why use [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]?
I know a little girl named Abebi, which is an African name. (Her nickname is actually [name_u]Baby[/name_u].) Maybe you like that as a full name for [name_u]Abby[/name_u]/Abbie instead?

I know a teen named [name_u]Abbey[/name_u] (no [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]).

I like more formal names with nickname so she has options as she gets older. I can understand not liking [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], but have you considered other names that would get you to [name_u]Abbie[/name_u]? A few names that could potentially have the nickname [name_u]Abbie[/name_u] are [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f], [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f], [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f].

You can also combine first and middle name to get to [name_u]Abbie[/name_u], like [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Brianne[/name_f] = [name_u]Abbie[/name_u]

@elizabeth_rose1 - Hmm, I like [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f], but I’m not 100% sold on the idea of using that to get to [name_u]Abbie[/name_u]? None of them feel overly me either. I may have to think about the initials thing.

@foeva - Abebi is cute! I actually do like that as a long form for [name_u]Abbie[/name_u], but it might be a bit odd as both S/O and I are very much caucasian? I do typically feel like that though about nicknames - if you don’t like the full name and love the nickname, then you should just use the nickname on the birth certificate - I think I’m just overthinking everything on my list at this stage of the game because I’ve run out of things to do at home!
